Professional Development Experiences

Student Teaching Experience, Fall 2013 Hamilton High School, Hamilton Ohio 11th &12th Grade Physics, 10th Grade Biology While at Hamilton High School I was the lead educator for two physics classes of approximately 30 students each and co-educated two biology inclusion classes with an Intervention Specialist. For the 18 weeks I was in the classroom I observed the first two and began teaching after that. I created lesson plans, lab experiences, homework assignments, assessments, graded assignments, and managed the classroom under the supervision of my cooperating teacher and when I was the lead educator. I also participated in bi-weekly professional development along with the resident educators of the school. I prepared lessons and examples of student work to be reviewed during observations by my University Supervisor and Assistant Principal of the school. I worked with the Intervention Specialists to implement IEP goals in the classroom and to develop strategies to accommodate diverse learners. Differentiation and student-initiated learning are promoted by the school and were implemented in the classroom. I also communicated with parents during two parent-teacher conference nights.

Methods Block Placement, February 2013 Franklin Local Schools, Franklin Ohio Seventh Grade Biology During my two-week placement at Franklin I observed a middle-school classroom and assisted in aspects of the classroom. These aspects were in-class tutoring, grading, and lesson planning. I planned, implemented, and graded a biology lesson to two classes. I observed parent-teacher conferences and discussed educational theory and practice with a veteran educator. Methods Block Placement, April 2013 Sycamore High School, Blue Ash Ohio 11th and 12th Grade Accelerated and Advanced Physics During my second two-week placement I observed two levels of physics classrooms. I observed and assisted preparation of an AP class and advanced content in the class. I helped administer lab experiences and implemented a one-day lesson plan I designed. I discussed the use of Inquiry in science education and the importance of cognitive skills with the cooperating teacher. Miami Connections Tutoring; Fall 2010, Spring 2012, Fall 2013 Talawanda High School, Oxford Ohio Math and Biology Tutor This is a tutoring program through Talawanda High School for at-risk students. While there I tutored students on basic math (algebra and geometry) and general biology concepts. All of their work was submitted online so the use of technology was emphasized. Adopt-A-School; Fall 2010, Spring 2011 Cincinnati Local Schools, Cincinnati Ohio General Biology Tutor Through Miami Universitys program I was assigned to Schroder High School in Cincinnati Ohio. This was an after-school program for at-risk students. I assisted students with their homework and make-up assignments in general biology.
