Lucy Hughes A2 Media Studies: Coursework Evaluation Question 1: 'In what ways does your media product use,

develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?' Documentary: Before we even attempted to create our documentary we carried out specific research into the documentary genre. The reason we did this was ecause we wanted to create a professional documentary so we could then follow the main codes and conventions of these real media products. !s you can see we were influenced y "organ #purloc$'s use of captions throughout his documentary and decided to use them in ours. %e felt it was appropriate to use captions asour it puts the interview into +owever, during documentary we did perspective and informs the audienceof ofreal challenge the codes and conventions what is going on. This made our interviews media products. This is ecause throughout two loo$ more professional as captions are aand of the main documentaries we watched main form and convention of real media researched they oth used an onscreen presenter, products. throughout our documentary we ,ust whereas, had a voiceover and decided against the These two clips onscreen presenter option. The reason for this from "iley &yrus' was ecause we felt an onscreen presenter may documentary the disrupt the flow of our documentary ecause movement show every so often we'd have to flic$ ac$ to the "iley in action and onscreen presenter and have them narrate and in her wor$ing we didn't thin$ this was appropriate for our environment, it documentary as there wasn't ,ust one viewpoint almost seems to the eing displayed in our documentary, compared audience that she to "organ #purloc$s' where the main feature of doesn't realise she's #uper #i-e "e is the unhealthy and negative eing filmed. %e affect fast food has on your ody. As you can were influenced y see to the right of the screen both documentaries this techni'ue and contained an on screen presenter. !s a group decided to use and we did elieve that using an onscreen presenter develop it in our was an effective form and convention of own documentary documentaries as it helps to tell a story and y showing clips of narrate the documentary however, compared to (ic$ and #ophie in #uper #i-e "e and "iley &yrus: The "ovement their wor$ing we didn't feel that our documentary needed a environment efore narrator as it was very self e*planatory what was interviewing them. going on. !lso ecause our documentary was an .*pository documentary there was no need for an onscreen presenter as the voiceover which These as two clips ta$en from our everything documentary wor$ed the narrator e*plained to show how we have used "iley &yrus' techni'ue of showing the audience (ic$ and #ophie in their natural environment efore the documentary has properly introduced the audience directly. them. It gives the audience a chance to see the individuals and understand what they do. )or e*ample during when (ic$ is scrolling through the article it gives us time to use a voiceover to introduce (ic$ and #ophie.

http:11youtu. e12Iua2l3-345 6 +ere is a clip of our voiceover from the documentary. %e used the same voice throughout the documentary to ensure continuity. .ven though we didn't have an onscreen presenter we still felt that the voiceover was e*tremely effective as it was still a le to put the documentary into perspective for the audience and almost narrate it the only difference was you couldn't see the individual tal$ing. https:11www.youtu e.co m1watch? v7B,8 9,:"d;w This pen tool 6 This clip shows the featured here change in the music on final cut etween sindance and was the tool pop /0, we were a le to which allowed gradually ma$e the two us to merge trac$s flow together and our two form into one until soundtrac$s sindance was slowly together. faded out. %e thought !nother way in which we developed the forms and this was an effective conventions of real media products was y as it techni'ue to use conducting our own college ena surveys to gain led us to use two information for our particular topic. The reason wein different sound trac$s conducted our own specific our survey was ecause we documentary needed to gain specific and relevant information to without disrupting the young people's and adults opinions girls flow of on se'uence. maturing too 'uic$ly and when we were researching over the internet nothing relevant came up so we decided to use our initiative and conduct our own surveys.

!s a group we elieved that our documentary developed the codes and conventions of real media products y the merging together two sound trac$s throughout our documentary and ma$ing them flow into one. %e decided to incorporate oth sindance and pop 39 into our documentary as we decided sindance would only e appropriate for the opening se'uence. Because of this we had to develop the forms and conventions of real media products of ,ust having one specific soundtrac$ at one time and develop our documentary into having two different soundtrac$s playing at one time. This was a very tric$y tas$ to do as we had to merge the trac$s together and allow them to flow without causing disruption to the rest of the documentary. The way in which we did this was through final cut, we had oth sindance and pop /0 and used the pen tools to merge the two trac$s together.

By conducting our own surveys we were a le to gain specific and relevant information which we would e appropriate to use in our documentary. This developed the forms and conventions of real media te*ts as during #purloc$s' documentary he used information and statistics that had already een gathered, he hadn't actively gone out and researched to gain access to this research.

Magazine Article: !swell as carrying out research into documentaries we also carried out research into specific maga-ine articles. The reason for this is ecause li$e with our documentary we wanted to $now the main forms and conventions of maga-ine articles so we could gain ideas on how we could create a professional loo$ing maga-ine article. In our own time we loo$ed through maga-ines such as the radio times and tried to layout our maga-ine article ased on that layout.

%e used the forms and conventions of real media Below is our finished maga-ine article. !s you can see we have products y having masthead which stood out from followed the maintimes forms and conventions a real media )rom this radio image you can see of that theylife laid their maga-ine one main image thedecided top and theout restwith of the te*t on the page.at %e to place maga-ine. then placed the te*t underneath. %hen we were carrying out our maga-ine research we thought this design

loo$ed very effective as the one large image drew your attention to the article straight the te*t eing e the first thing the away. reader !lso saw when they were %e also made sure we included the date, time and channel of our placed on the ottomthis made the the page easy to article read and e*tremely for the reader. !lso the supporting image flic$ing through the maga-ine. %e elieve it loo$s documentary as without feature maga-ine wouldn't e clear to the right hand side of the page ma$es the page come together more and shows how everything is lin$ed to the effective as it puts the page into perspective and as useful as it doesn't provide the $ey information of when the allows the reader to $now what the article will e main title. %hen creating our dou le page spread we used the form and convention of having a masthead which documentary is to e aired. %e decided to place this efore the main a out. stood out main image a variety images. article as we clearly wanted and it to one stand out from thewith rest of the te*t of so supporting the

<i$e the radio times dou le page spread we used supporting images to support and develop the article. This was effective as it gives the reader a feel of what else they can e*pect in the documentary if they choose to watch it, it provides snippets of what's to come. %e used the forms and conventions of real media te*ts as in the radio times article it promotes the documentary its advertising y using images from the actual documentary, we were influenced y this and decided to use the same techni'ue. It was an e*tremely effective techni'ue to use as it allowed to focus more on the documentary te*t as the images were already availa le to us from the documentary we ,ust had to choose the appropriate ones.

By comparing our article to a radio times article you can see that we have used the conventions of including images from the documentary the same as the radio times %e laid out our te*t using columns. The trailer using images reason we chose to do this was ecause from ;octor %ho. It is throughout our maga-ine article research we %e followed the forms and conventions of an effective convention clearly saw that laying out te*ts in columns real media te*ts through the use of page use as it provides a was a $ey feature of real media te*ts, weforms andto num ers.conducting This is a simple to include %hen our thing maga-ine article we decided against challenging any of the conventions of real of in our case werethat then influenced y this and decided to wasflavour yet it is e*tremely necessary when creating a ecause media products. The reason for this was every maga-ine article we studied laid out relatively the documentary. use this techni'ue in our product as it created maga-ine article an important feature in an informed decision to follow these codes and conventions ecause if the seem and and ecause of this we made a professional layout for our maga-ine. !lso real media te*ts as it ena les the reader to we decided to challenge them our end result wouldn't e athe professional maga-ine as the important and specific y laying out te*t in columns it allows easily navigate their way through the codes and conventions needed to create a professional maga-ine article would not the reader to clearly see where the te*t is e featured therefore it documentary y easily finding articles y would've impacted on the 'uality of our finished maga-ine. !nd as you can see from the images elow the positioned and allows it to flow nicely loo$ing through the page num ers. maga-ine layout we followed is featured in all professional maga-ines today so if we challenged this codes and ma$ing it more accessi le to read.

conventions we wouldn't of created a professional media product.

!lthough, one way in which we developed the forms and conventions of real media products is through the use of Radio Trailer: including a maga-ine article not a interview. The reason for this is ecause we decided to include a descriptive https:11soundcloud.com1a9cole1/1radio6trailer maga-ine article a out our documentary instead of including and conducting an interview. The reason we developed the conventions ;uring our research and planning stage we had +ere are a list offorms radio and trailers that we and used a article instead of an interview is ecause we didn't feel an to underta$e some research into the different researched: interview would e an appropriate way of promoting our types of radio trailers to gain ideas for our own 1. https:11www.youtu e.com1watch? documentary through the use of a maga-ine product. %e loo$ed at a variety of student radio v7;2 3ma*y9=" 6 movie trailer article. The reason for this is ecause there is not one individual who trailers ut also some professional ones to gain 9. https:11www.youtu e.com1watch? stands out who we should interview promote our inspiration and discover the forms and v7>p?9mQ$T@Io 6doctor hoto trailer documentary as instead we would need to interview a conventions of a real radio trailer. /. https:11www.youtu e.com1watch? variety of different individuals totrailer create a strong viewpoint v73&A5tw;"h6g 69!"#! to promote our documentary, therefore, we decided to %e developed the codes and conventions y create a descriptive article promoting our documentary to ensuring that we used the same music and clips the reader y descri ing what would feature in our from the documentary. The main why we !s you can see from the e*ample radio trailers we followed the forms and the conventions of reason realcreating media documentary and reasons ehind our chose to do this was to ensure that there was products y ensuring that the length of our radio trailer was etween /B652 seconds, this was ecause documentary. continuity etween our products and the so way to from our research we could see that the ma,ority of radio trailers were in etween this time limit we dothe this was li$e to use the same soundtrac$ from $new would had to ma$e it short and sharp and straight to point the e*amples. I elieved we the documentary. techni'ue was also following managed to do this as our finished radio trailer came to 51 seconds andThis included all the information it the forms and conventions of real media needed to promote the documentary. !nother way in which we followed the forms products ut we developed it y also ta$ing the and conventions of real media products is li$e clips from the documentary and merging them the doctor who and 0B91B trailer we ensured that together and overlapping to ma$e a very at the endin ofwhich the trailer there was a voiceover Dne way we challenged the forms and conventions of radio trailers is wethem didn't fast paced radio trailer which promoted our stating name of the documentary and the includethe a voiceover throughout the documentary. The reason for this is ecause we didn't documentary. <i$ewise the ;octor %hoC time and channel it was going to e aired on. %e feel it was appropriate as we thought it would leave us with less time to actually in promote radio trailer they have used the same were influenced y the the 0B91B trailer who and include clips from documentary in placed our trailer. %e decided it was only necessary to music from T8 show which represents the continuity, we this information atat the end, elieved the it was use the voiceover the endwe to promote documentarythe ut other than that we ,ust used as a group were influenced y this more appropriate the listener as could the clips from the as documentary the gain ul$ an of the trailer. %e got our inspiration for this and decided to use this techni'ue in effective our own product ut insight to the documentary first that efore the from a variety of student trailers we watched and we thought that the more develop it y selecting the details were provided it also ena led the ones were the ones with no voice over and ,ust the clips from the documentary, yet appropriate we were clips to use. trailers all contained a documentary to flow etter. still challenging the forms and conventions as the professional voiceover.
