English

* Why we study English? English is essential in every aspect of our lives.


* English is a core subject offered to all students. * Yr10 and Yr11 courses offer opportunities to develop:

* Writing and communication skills across a range of experiences, *Reading texts and information. E.g. newspapers, adverts, magazines, WebPages *Writing in various text forms. E.g. letters, emails, notices, social media. * Literacy and ICT skills for life. E.g. emailing, blog writing.

Course content: * Certificate in English functional skills accreditation is offered to all


students.

*Functional skills are qualifications in English that equip learners with the basic
practical skills required in everyday life, education and the workplace.

*Certificate in English Functional skills is offered at Entry level 1, 2 3 & Level 1


and 2.

*It is important in year 10, that students begin to develop an awareness of the
levels required to access KS5 courses. Students begin at entries 1, 2 and 3.

How will I learn? * Within a range of contexts and experiences students learn to discuss and
question using effective communication skills. *Students study a range of literature and media texts. *Using a range of texts students develop the skills required to gain meaning from text.

How will I be assessed?


Students are assessed in three components at each level. Each student must pass all three components to achieve the level and progress. At Entry 1, 2 and 3 level students are assessed as and when they are ready to achieve. 1. Speaking, listening and communication. Discussions in formal and informal situations about personal information and various topics. 2. Reading involves two end of unit assessments. Reading and understanding the purpose and content of various texts that explain, recount and inform information. 3. Writing one assessment. Writing in a correct form (letter, email, message, notice) for an intended audience. There is a focus on punctuation, spelling and grammar. LEVEL 1 There are three equally weighted units (33.3%). Each unit is assessed separately. Speaking and Listening and Communication: 2 tasks are set: informal/formal discussion. These tasks are devised by the tutor and assessed by the tutor. Reading: There are two texts about one topic. There are questions to answer. The total number of marks is 20. Pass mark is usually 15 out of 20.

Writing: There are two writing tasks with context. The total number of marks is 25. The pass mark is usually 19. LEVEL 2 There are three equally weighted units (33.3%). * Most students continue to study towards English Functional skills at Oak Lodge alongside individual timetabled pathway courses. *Students continue to work towards progression up the functional skills framework. * Most students require a functional skills certificate as a pre-requisite to college courses.

Maths
It is highly unlikely we can spend a day without doing maths of some sort. Studying maths helps us to handle numbers around us and to solve problems. Studying maths provides you with the tools and skills to make life a little easier. Maths is useful for recognising patterns and understanding the world around us. Maths plays a vital and often unseen role in areas of our modern life. Course content: *You will be learning about the four things that make up mathematics: *Using and applying mathematics * Number and algebra *Shape, space and measures *Statistics *You will then take the four things and apply them to functional, real-life, and everyday contexts. How will I learn? * Classroom based learning in groups or individually, using a mixture of:
* Traditional learning *Practical based learning *Group work

*Technology

How will I be assessed? * Entry Level Certificates, Level 1 and 2 Certificates in Functional Skills Mathematics. * The exams will be taken throughout the year when the students have completed the required sections from their scheme of work.

Post 16 Opportunities, Careers * Students who have not reached Functional Skills Level 2 will have an opportunity to study alongside their chosen college courses.

Science
*Science is one of the core subjects. * We teach Applied Science which consist of Biology, Physics and Chemistry. * Science is a broad topic which can lead to further study or vocacctional work in Scientific Research, Laboratory techincan, Vetinary scienist, Health & Social care, Nursery Care, Beauty Therapist, Engineering, Computer Science, or Food Technology Course content: * Entry Level Certificate in Science has 3 modules with Biology, 3 modules with Chemistry and 3 modules with Physics. * Suitable for students who are working within the Science National Curriculum Level 3 - 5.
*BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Applied Science has 4 modules; Biology,

Chemistry, Physics and Career in Science. *Suitable for students who are working within the Science National Curriculum Level 4 - 7 with proficient level in literacy and numeracy skills (National Curriculum level 6).

How will I learn? * Laboratory based teaching (Experiment led). * Classroom based teaching (Theory). * Field trip on Ecology. How will I be assessed?

* Exam and Assessment test at end of every Entry Level Certificate Science module. There are 9 modules and they are spread over two years (5 modules in Year 10 and 4 modules in Year 11). If achieved 100 150 marks = Entry Level 3 (highest grade). If achieved 50 99 marks = Entry Level 2 And below 49 marks = Entry Level 1. * 100% coursework to be done in class and at home as part of the BTEC Level 1 Applied Science. There are 4 modules to be done over two years (2 modules in Year 10 and 2 modules in Year 11). You will need to pass the specific criteria for each module to generate an overall pass for BTEC Level 1 Certificate (Higher grade which is equivalent to GCSE Grade D and E). A BTEC Level 1 Award will be given only if achieved 3 modules or less (equivalent to GCSE Grade F & G). Post 16 Opportunities, Careers * Study BTEC Level 1 Certificate if achieved Entry Level 3. * Opportunity to do BTEC Level 2 in Science related subject such as Health & Social care, Children care, Electrical/electronic Engineering and pursue into Level 3 to achieve a placement at a chosen University. * Study for a specialised subject such as Biology GCSE, Chemistry GCSE, Physics GCSE. * Many NVQ courses; Laboratory Scientist, Laboratory Technician, Animal Care, Beauty Therapy, Health & Social care.

ICT
Course content: The ICT curriculum for the class will offer a collection of different accreditation programmes, they are; GCSE ICT (Short Course) Functional Skills Level 2 Functional Skills Level 1 Functional Skills Entry Level 1,2 and 3*

*Pupils will be learning and developing Functional Skills and knowledge and depending on their individual ability they will be given the opportunity to take the Level 1 and Level 2 Functional Skills exams.

How will I learn? To work independently and this involves in doing your homework independently. To complete your homework fully and hand it on time. To apply the knowledge and skills you learnt to your project work (with minimal support from the teacher and TA). To continue to develop your problem solving and analytical skills. To continue to develop your literacy skills and apply the same attitude as you do in your literacy lessons. To adopt a mature attitude towards your work and in lessons. For GCSE pupils, you will be expected to spend considerable hours on your coursework at home. To use ICT jargons in your coursework and homework.

Art
You must have an interest in Art and Design, be self motivated, and be prepared to work at home. Art is very successful at Oak Lodge school, with many students achieving a GCSE grade A* - C. If you choose Art and Design you will be given the opportunity to develop your creative ideas through a wide range of media and techniques including: - Painting - Printing - Ceramics - Photography - Animation - Sculpture Course content The Art Department teaches ideas and techniques through themes, and all projects involve some written work through annotation of ideas and artist research. You will have the opportunity to widen your knowledge through gallery visits. Finding out about different cultures. Working with your hands. Visiting art galleries, discussing and writing about artwork. Researching artists and artwork. Making your own choices. Following your own enquiry. Creating and expressing your ideas. Exhibiting and selling your work.

How will I learn? In class you will be encouraged to: - Work independently on thematic based projects. - Evaluate and review your work as it progresses and identify how to improve. - Have fun! How will I be assessed? Exam board: OCR (Portfolio 60%) You will choose a theme and present one project for assessment. (Set Task 40%) You will have 3 months to prepare for your 10 hour exam- 2 full days. You will develop a sketchbook that shows your thoughts, working process and skills for each project. Post 16 Opportunities, Careers Many students go on to study art at Art College. Those who do not study Art beyond GCSE find the subject has built their self confidence, allowed them to be creative and developed their visual awareness.

Design Technology
Design and Technology is a diverse subject that encourages pupils to develop various skills in designing, planning, making, evaluating and it draws on knowledge and understanding from across the curriculum. It opens up a range of job opportunities in Engineering, Manufacturing, Designing, Construction, Project Management and many more. Course content: Following a creative a 3-year KS3 Design and Technology curriculum pupils have the option to further develop their skills and are appropriately placed in one of the following pathways at Key Stage 4.

How will I be assessed? AQA Entry Level Certificate (ELC) ELC in Design and Technology allows candidates to follow specific component units of work in a clearly focused framework, which allows them to develop and practice their designing and making skills. Throughout the course students are expected to complete 4 units of work, of which 2 are compulsory. Each of the unit consists of 10 with photographic evidence of practical work. The work is presented in a folder that is submitted at the end of the course to the AQA examining board. There is no exam with this accreditation.

GCSE Resistant Materials GCSE Design and Technology in Resistant Materials helps students develop the ability to design and make products with creativity and originality,

using a range of materials and techniques. This specification requires students to develop their knowledge of woods, metals, plastics and composite materials. Other materials may also be used and the use of new technologies is also encouraged. This course has 60 % controlled assessment in order to recognise the importance of practical work within this subject. It is a very challenging course with a lot of written work. The final exam at the end of the course focuses on design questions and tests the candidates knowledge of materials and processes. This is worth the remaining 40%.

Post 16 Opportunities, Careers

EDEXCELL BTEC in Construction Students, of all abilities, often fail to see the link between what they learn in an academic sense and the world of work. BTECs in Construction change all that. The vocational learning style is completely different from the more traditional routes. Students may research their topics and present results in a wide variety of ways other than written text. They dont have to work alone group interaction can often play a part, for example through teamwork and role-play. BTECs can engage and enhance the performance of all learners, who recognise that the skills they are developing are those that employers will value. Students work at their own pace to achieve minimum credits to achieve the accreditation and have a chance to build on this at a later stage. There is no final exam with this accreditation but continuous folder of work is submitted at the end of the course. Whichever pathways the student will follow they will be expected to complete homework and those studying the GCSE or BTEC will need to attend an after school Club weekly.

Food Technology
Food Technology is a practically based subject. Pupils will design, prepare and make different recipes Food Technology helps to understand and develop the need for healthy eating. It helps pupils to recognise and analyse the need for different types of food and drink. For some pupils it can also be an excellent training for a career in the Food and Catering industry. It helps pupils to develop and enhance their independent skills. Course content AQA Entry Level Certificate in Food Technology Levels 1 to 3 Course Topics: Unit 1. Health and Safety in the school/college and the work area. Unit 2. Evaluating existing products. Unit 3. Food Handling, Preparation and Storage. Unit 4. Preparing Food for a Specified Function. PE

Year 11 Students at a Local Leisure Centre

Physical Education at Oak Lodge aims to provide an enjoyable and balanced programme enabling all students to develop physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. The curriculum offers a comprehensive range of experiences to meet the needs of individuals irrespective of race, gender, class, age, disability or culture. Pupils are taught to understand how regular exercise can have physical, mental, social and emotional benefits, all which are necessary for their present and future well being..

Course content: Pupils have 2 hours of practical PE and 1 hour of Theory in Year 10 and Year 11. These two hours allow students to participate in their chosen sports activities at different leisure centres. This has the added benefit of developing their confidence to participate in physical activities out of school. The 1 hour of Theory allows them to develop an understanding of the knowledge related to the activities they examine and reinforce their literacy levels. The Key stage 4 programme builds on students prior knowledge and experiences helping them to develop further their physical competences, health and well being and the knowledge and understanding associated with each activity.

Students will also focus on developing the following skills: Independence Leadership Self Confidence/Self Belief

This qualification is accredited by Signature (formerly known as CACDP) and will give learners the basic skills to communicate using BSL. Learners will study how to communicate using sign language and finger spelling, body language and facial expression. Topics for study will include: asking for and giving personal information, weather, transport, directions, numbers, dates, money, hobbies and work or study. The course is divided into three units and there is one assessment for each unit. Upon successful completion of all three units, learners will receive a Signature Level 1 BSL certificate.

Media (OPTION)
Why should I choose Media? * In the modern world, we use Media every day. Think about how much Media affects
your life... everything you read like newspapers and magazines, everything you watch like television and movies they are all part of the media!

* Now we have Social Media too like Twitter and Facebook. How do all of these things
influence us?

* Media is a great subject to study as it includes parts of lots of other subjects Art,
Business, English and Drama and there is a great mix of practical and theory work!

* It's an important part of your life and you need to understand how it works and why. Course content: * In Media classes you will be preparing for a BTEC in Creative Media Production at

Textiles (OPTION)
Why should I choose Textiles ? * Interested in the career progression in the Textiles and Fashion world. * To develop new knowledge and understanding about Textiles. * To develop basic technical, design, innovation and research skills. * To develop and apply sewing techniques * To develop and practise creative skills required for career progression in the Textiles Sector Course content: * It will be no exam.
