Eyeo Call for Northern Spark Projects

at Orchestra Hall 2014 Submit your proposal here.

The Call We at Eyeo love Northern Spark, the citywide overnight art festival. It happens the night after Eyeo ends. This year were really excited to be invited to produce some content for it. To that end weve partnered with the newly renovated Orchestra Hall in downtown Minneapolis where we will stage the Eyeo Node of Northern Spark. We plan to install 3 separate projects- conceived, proposed and executed by Eyeo attendees. We know creativity, technology and artistry runs deep in the Eyeo crowd, and were thrilled to have the opportunity to help bring some new projects to the masses. So this is the call for proposals. Below we outline the 3 spaces we can stage projects in, the basic technical specs of those spaces and some logistics to get you started. We cant wait to hear your ideas. Theme We dont have a specic theme were gunning for here but there are some aspects of the Eyeo crowd and the site itself that suggest some concepts which excite us. Orchestra Hall is about sound. Sound reactive concepts, or projects that explore sound are a natural t. (visualizing sound/reacting to real time sound/amplitude/frequencies/patterns) Interaction. This is a public event with thousands of visitors. If theres a way use their group or individual actions/interactions to drive a project thats a real plus. (Sensors/Tracking/Listening) Visualization. All three project calls involve projection or lighting manipulation. Where the input or data drives that visual manipulation comes from is wide open. Its really important to note that we make comments below about what the projects/spaces could potentially include. Dont let these force you down a specic line of thinking. They might be helpful, but dont be afraid to come up with ideas that completely ignore these comments. Application Timeline Application deadline is 9pm (CST), Monday, February 24, 2014 Selected projects will be notied by March 3rd. What Is Northern Spark? Northern Spark is a unique, free, annual, multidisciplinary, multi-venue, multiple partner, dusk-to-dawn, public arts festival. Northern Spark is a one-night event that serves as a platform for artists and partners to dream of and plan projects that use the city as a stage and screen. More information about Northern Spark: http://2013.northernspark.org About the Venue - Orchestra Hall Orchestra Hall, one of Minnesotas cultural and architectural touchstones and will be a node of Eyeo this year. It has recently been renovated and is looking stellar. Its not only acoustically brilliant; we feel its the perfect canvas for Eyeo participants to enhance. The Spaces / Projects

Map The Concert Hall

Overview One step inside the recently renovated hall reveals an architecture space that appears to be made for projecting mapping. Varied three-dimensional white cubes burst out of the stage backdrop and continue up along the ceiling. Its stunning on its own and prime for a projection project. On top of that, this is Orchestra Hall, and they have an orchestra, and theyve agreed to perform as part of the project. Yeah. Whoa. It should be noted that this is a world class orchestra that just won a Grammy and has long ranked among Americas top symphonic ensembles. Choice. Theyll perform a pre-determined 30-40 minute contemporary score twice during the night. For the remainder of the evening various sound sources will accompany/drive the projection. This may be a solo bongo player, stomping dancer, or your iPod. Well work together to gure that part out.

What Were Looking For + A sound reactive projection mapping piece + Visual content that can follow the orchestral performance in real time + Visual content inuenced by the narrative of the orchestral score during performances + Visual content that can accompany a wide range of other sonic inputs, performed or recorded material Due to the scale and complexity of this project an experienced team is encouraged for this proposal. Our technicians will install the projectors. But the artists will be responsible for creating the map, and focusing/ne tuning the projectors. A site visit in March is required. Details below. We will provide a recording of the orchestral score in advance to work with. Production Timeline + Selected proposal notied by Monday, March 3rd + A site visit with the artist/s will be coordinated for March map(s) should be created during this visit + Installation begins Monday, June 9th. Testing/tuning/rehearsing will take place during the week of Eyeo + Project must be ready to go live Friday evening, June 13th for Eyeo premier + Project runs over Saturday night, June 14 from 9pm until 5am Technical Details *See schematic & images as well + 3 Projectors from a single position in the rear of the hall + Projectors accept a range of input types (VGA, HDMI, etc.) + Audio feeds are available from the house soundboard (house/stage microphones, line inputs, etc.) + Artists provide all required computers and interfaces to feed the projectors Eyeo Will Fund + Projector rental costs + March site visit ight and hotel for up to 2 team members + 2 Complimentary Eyeo Passes* + $2,000 Flat Project Fee** *Either we can refund an existing pass or provide an additional pass. **Fee to be used for any and all additional costs that may arise. Equipment, materials, travel & lodging during Eyeo, and of course, time.

The Spaces / Projects

Overview The new lobby is a big open 4-story space with large windows that allow for the opportunity to be seen from inside and outside the building. The space has a great M.C Escher vibe to it with the various staircases, landings and 4-story columns. The natural temptation is to play with the details, but theres so much glass its a bit of projection mapping nightmare. There are almost too many details. Instead we want to turn this space into a beacon. A space ooded with interactively controlled color lights. The artistry here isnt so much in what one sees happen, although it will be a spectacle, but why the visual happens. Why did this whole space just go from red to blue? Why is purple now?

Lobby Color

What Were Looking For + Interactive or sensing project where input changes are reected via color changes + Is it a game, is it a puzzle, can the crowd win? Can they gure it out and manipulate it? What makes it change? Production Timeline + Selected Proposal notied by Monday, March 3rd + A site visit encouraged but not mandatory + Project needs to be installed/tested/rehearsed in less than 10 hours over the course of the week of 6/9/14 + Project must be ready to go live Friday evening, June 13th for Eyeo premier + Project runs over Saturday night, June 14 from 9pm until 5am Technical Details *See schematic & images as well + Well provide lighting xtures to ood the entire space in color(s) + 3-4 stands of lights (Red, Blue, & Green) set about the lobby + Lights are controllable via DMX* (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMX512) *DMX can be controlled by various applications. (Processing, etc.) + Sound Amplication (powered speakers as needed) Eyeo Will Fund + Lighting rental costs + Sound system rental costs (up to 4 self powered speakers) + 1 Complimentary Eyeo Pass* + $1,000 Flat Project Fee** *Either we can refund an existing pass or provide an additional pass. **Fee to be used for any and all additional costs that may arise. Equipment, materials, travel & lodging during Eyeo, and of course, time.

The Spaces / Projects

Engaged Entrance

Overview The entrance to Orchestra Hall provides the great opportunity to engage with crowds and passers by on the ground. Theres a large open space outside the entrance and a large white stone surface above it to project on. Ideally this project will capture inputs/interaction taking place on the ground and represent, or re-represent them on the wall above. There are two unique constraints to this site. 1. Amplied sound isnt allowed outside. But that doesnt mean it has to be silent. Un-amplied sound sources, (from footsteps to voices, or bongos to buckets) could serve as inputs. 2. The projector will be staged inside the building on the second oor and there are no ports anywhere to run wires from inside to outside. So think about either going wireless (wireless triggers/sensors/microphones) or staging camera sensors inside, possibly from the 2nd oor vantage point.

What Were Looking For + Interactive or sensing project where input manipulations are projected above the participants + We like sound sources + We like thinking about sound and performance as it relates to culture + As Sly and the Family Stone put it: Everybody is Star Production Timeline + Selected Proposal notied by Monday, March 3rd + A site visit encouraged but not mandatory + Project needs to be installed/tested/rehearsed in less than 10 hours over the course of the week of 6/9 + Project must be ready to go live Friday evening, June 13th for Eyeo premier + Project runs over Saturday night, June 14 from 9pm until 5am Technical Details + 1 Projector available + The screen (the wall) is 16x9 + Set-up must be wireless from outdoor activity to projector (projector will be staged on mezzanine) + There is power available outdoors + Un-amplied sound only Eyeo Will Fund + Projector rental costs + 1 Complimentary Eyeo Pass* + $1,000 Flat Project Fee** *Either we can refund an existing pass or provide an additional pass. **Fee to be used for any and all additional costs that may arise. Equipment, materials, travel & lodging during Eyeo, and of course, time.

The Logistics

Things to Consider While none of the following are strict requirements, they are each important factors in making our decisions. Artistic Quality. Eyeo is committed to supporting the work of artists. The proposed work can be serious or funny, spectacular or intimate, high or low, or any combination thereof, but it cannot be an advertisement or promotional. Reactive to and/or representative of Sound. We are at Orchestra Hall after all. Participatory. This is a public event with thousands of visitors. If theres a way use their group or individual actions/interactions to drive a project thats a real plus. (Sensors/Tracking/Listening) Accessible. As a public arts event, there will be a broad audience with a range of arts knowledge from novice to practitioner. How does your proposal account for this? Feasibility. Northern Spark lasts 513 minutes. Installation time is limited and deinstallation happens the Sunday morning. Make sure your project is feasible and impactful and that we understand how. Experience. Where are you coming from? Have you worked with this technology in a live setting before? Time for install and testing is limited this speaks again to feasibility. The Crowds. Depending on the nature and placement of your project, there may be very large crowds to appreciate it. How does your proposal account for this? The Hard-and-Fast Details + This call is open only to Eyeo 2014 attendees. + Unless explicitly listed above, all project execution expenses and participant expenses are the responsibility of the project artist/team. The project fee is intended to assist with these expenses. + Project fees will be paid upon execution/completion of the projects on June 15th, 2014. + Artists are responsible for being in attendance for the entire duration of the Northern Spark Performance and overseeing their project. + This call will be juried by the Eyeo team, which reserves the right to request additional material and information after the proposal deadline, and to reject any and all proposals received. Application Requirements The application form is linked below. You will be asked to submit work samples as well as 1 pdf which needs to include the following: + + + + + Cover Page with contact information and super brief project description Proposal Concept (max 1 page) Supporting Materials such as diagrams, including additional technical specications (max 2 pages) Budget that ts within the parameters of the project fee and/or clearly identies and conrms additional resources (max 1 page) Brief Bio and CV (max 1 page for each primary participant)

The FAQs

My bio and CV are way longer than one page. Whats the most important information to keep on them as I pare them down? We recommend writing a short paragraph bio, and then listing with links some projects that relate to the one you are proposing. Were more interested in additional information about your ability to complete your proposal in a quality way than we are about your career. (Though were sure youre doing great things with your career.) What technical specications do you want to see included in my supporting materials? The technical specications we want to see in your supporting materials are things like equipment, dimensions, site diagrams, any special structures or features that would be needed, etc. Basically, anything that will help us get a sense of how your project would physically t into the space, and what the major physical components are. Whoa, this is exciting stuff. How can I help support this? We are looking for one special Eyeo at Northern Spark sponsor to help make this all happen. For more details get in touch dave@eyeofestival.com, wed love to talk to you about the possibilities. Double Whoa, can I help out on the ground? Yes. You can volunteer. That would be stellar.
