I chose to focus on the chapter one reading of Disclosing New Worlds for this week. I honestly did have a bit of a hard time understanding this particular reading, as it was quite dense, although it did make a little bit more sense once we started talking about it in class. My understanding of this reading is that it is mainly an argument focusing around the idea that if people are entrepreneurs, political activists, or working for the community, they are all doing similar things; they are all disclosing new worlds and disclosing new orientations to the world for others. In particular they design for communities and their designs have a particular orientation for disclosing new worlds. I feel this ties into Heideggers notion of the way in which people are operating within world(s) without knowing, interacting in particular communities and activities. That humans move in and out of different worlds, and within each of these worlds there is a particular understanding and orientation of how to be, of what other things are and what other people are. This chapter suggest three different kinds of moves that are identifiable and are interesting when looking at them in relation to designers. These moves are and can be made by anyone but designers can definitely use and pay particular attention to these moves when designing. The three different moves are articulation, reconfiguration and cross appropriation. Articulation distinguishes things from one another, to enable seeing things more clearly in relation from one another, and separating things out that may not matter as much. It shows the way in which people separate out what matters to them or what doesnt matter. The moment that human beings define what kind of style they have is really important, it can also be seen as humans adopting a particular style of otherness. For humans the idea of articulation is when we are forced to make a choice and we all need to be aware and make a coherent choice of what style is most important, as humans are ultimately reflecting on what choices they are affirming. This resonates with Heideggers view of history in Being in Time, where in which he speaks of being engaged in working and being aware of what is important in what you are doing in your world. Reconfiguration in my understanding shows the shift from governing the world to controlling your own world, a negotiation of power between interactions. The epochal shift from governing to control. The idea that we govern the world, that there is a negotiating involved there and that there is always an engagement and responsibility. There are different modes of command that are deeply embedded into us such a gender -men and women roles which can be experienced when feeling power and exercising power. Reconfiguration can also be experienced in designed things. The epochal shift into the epoch of modernity and the motion of control is more dominant

In reconfiguration designers when designing designed things need to be aware and need to ask themselves can we design ways in which people regains a sense of governess, instead of control? Can we open up the other possibility for other relationships? Designers need to constantly look taking a world or practice, where one world is operative and re designing it where another world becomes more prominent. It is necessary for designers to think about these shifts in the way the world is thought of and experienced, as the reconfigurations in which people experience the world through materials. Cross appropriation focuses on metaphor and translation. This mode was very active in earlier history prior to modernity, where people understood different spheres of activity as being related to one another. Such as a plant blossom referenced to a personality blossoming and seasons referring to a person being born and dying. Transposing understanding from one world to another can also be seen as a metaphorical transfer and metaphorical ways of generating understanding, such as the wheel can be a metaphor for generating understanding of life, a cycle. In design major shifts also occurred when appropriating one style from another. Science and technology appears in dwellings and people living in these houses adopting these styles. The style of the house, the interior makes people to need clean all the time, to control your interior. Using a metaphor to open up a new world, is taking something from the old world to the new.
