Hanna Wharton Internship Journals Sports Marketing Journal #1: 1/13/14 - 1/26/14 For the first week of my internship

with Keith he was showing me around all the facilities and equipment. I first met him in his office and we talked there a while about what all exactly I would be doing with him. He also told me like what all to expect while interning with him, like his expectations and everything. The first day he showed me around his office and in the Butcher Center. In the Butcher Center there is a big closet in the back where they hold some o the equipment that doesnt all fit out in the main shed at the field. Another day he drove me to the main intramurals field where there is lots of room for outside activities. At this field there is also a huge shed that holds most of the equipment that the Intramurals program has. We also looked at the tennis courts and the sand volleyball courts. I didnt realize that intramurals was in charge of all these facilities; I used to think it was only the main field in H Lot. On Wednesday I went to the first Free Bowling & Billiards night in the Student center from 8:30 PM to 11:00 PM. This was where students can come every Wednesday from that time to bowl and play pool for free. At the event I was overseeing everything that was going on, signing people in and handing out bowling shoes. After people were done bowling they would give the shoes back to me and I would spray them with a cleaner.

Journal #2: 1/27/14 - 2/9/14 For the next two weeks I started getting more involved and doing some more things with Keith and the program. We would meet in Butcher Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and then on

Tuesdays and Thursdays we would meet in the Student Center. On Tuesdays and Thursdays we would usually meet to talk about any upcoming plans and events. Any events would include themes for the Free Bowling and Billiards nights and then also on Tuesday and Thursday nights the sports would be starting in the Butcher center gym from 10:00 PM to 12:00 AM. On Wednesday nights I continued to over see the Free Bowling and Billiards and signing in people. One of the things we started to meet to talk about the Super bowl party that is coming up within the next few weeks. Tyrone Roach and I will need to be at the event a little while before the game starts and will be there the whole time the game is going on and there will be activities and food for the students that come, all for free! At the event there were corn hole boards set up and there was an X Box set up with some games that people could play. Since a lot of the events had been going on the past week, Keith showed me how to fill out the program forms for after I have events. On these forms I need to fill out certain contact information, then the total cost of food/beverages, the total count of people that came that night.

Journal #3: 2/10/14 - 2/23/14 In these next two weeks I did most of the same things as I had done the previous month. Tuesday and Thursday nights were the Intramurals nights in the Butcher center gym. Then on Wednesday nights was the free Bowling and billiards in the student center. On Wednesday February 19 it was relay for life night at the free bowling and billiards. We all were told to wear purple and lots of decorations were put up for the event. This week we met and talked about the March Madness event that would be coming up soon. Keith told us that this was something he always normally does the first week of March and that he wanted Tyrone to take it over and have it as one of his events. This is a 5v5 basketball tournament that would take place the first week

of March. It is free and open to any shepherd university students. Keith told us that usually this event is big and that a lot of people normally participate in it. He also introduced us to the graphic designer and told us to set up a meeting with her to get a nice flier for the March madness event. So I helped him pick up fliers and put them up around campus to advertise for the event.

Journal #4: 2/24/14 - 3/9/14 During these two weeks it was a little bit slower for me since it was midterms week there was no free bowling and billiards in the student center and the other two nights werent going on either. The university does not allow us to o anything during midterms or finals week since students shouldnt be out doing things, just in studying. So since I wasnt as busy with the events this week, I spent much time on working on the club sports rules and guidelines manual that I have been working on. I got a lot of it done and am getting closer and closer to getting it done. I was doing a lot of research on other schools campus recreation programs and looking at their manuals to get ideas for the Shepherd one I have been working on. On Tuesday March 4, I helped Tyrone work his March Madness tournament. I sat at the main table signing people in and helping people gather teams of 5, and helping them come up with team names. During the event I was sitting at the table with the clock and score board, helping with that and help watch the game with Tyrone, and making calls. There werent many rules but I would help him call out when there were fouls or anything else that was not allowed. I also was in charge of the brackets during the tournament and helping Tyrone place every team where they needed to be.

Journal #5: 3/10/14 - 3/23/14

The first week of these two weeks was our spring break and I was away in Ohio but there were still a lot of things that needed to be done and Keith needed my help with. I was on call almost all day because Keith was constantly sending me things by email, and text to do. He mainly had me in contact with the graphic designer because she needed information about upcoming events so she could make some fliers for me to put up. I was also doing a lot of work on the sports manual and finalizing some things on it. I was pretty much all done with it but I sent it to some people to review and look at it one last time for me. There was no free bowling and billiards the first week, but the second Wednesday there was. Next week was starting soccer on Tuesday and Thursday nights so I needed to prepare for all of that and get all of the equipment together that I would need for those nights.

Journal #6: 3/24/14 - 4/6/14 This week I was back in the office a lot with Keith getting many hours done because we were busy and had a lot to catch up on. It was also starting the indoor pick up soccer in the butcher center on Tuesday and Thursday nights. On Wednesday April 26, at the free bowling and billiards night it was Lacrosse night. So my team all came to bowl for free and Keith bought us pizzas for coming. We did this so that it was a way to get other students attending the event to meet us and it was something else or our team to do together and some team bonding. On Wednesday April 2nd at the free bowling and billiards it was also Greek week so that night all the fraternities and sororities came to bowl and play pool. The record before this night of people attending the free bowling and billiards was 67 people, and this night had 70 people show up. That was pretty awesome to beat the record and the numbers look good to compared to prior semesters also, which is really good.

Journal #7: 4/7/14 - 4/20/14 These next two weeks I was doing a lot of advertising for my Corn hole tournament that will be on April 21st. I had some extra fliers so I went around and was posting them up all around campus again to make sure that people knew about the event and were going to do it. I was also using social media to advertise for my event too. Social media today has become very popular and is used by many people today. I posted it on my twitter and Facebook about my event and also it was mentioned on the Campus Recreation Facebook too. On the fliers and on social media I was advertising that people could sign up for the corn hole tournament the day of and by emailing me their team members with a team name. On April 17th there was also a table tennis tournament in the student center down in the rams den. This event could also be signed up by email and by just showing up the day of. This week I was also catching up with some of the program forms that I always need to fill out after I do events. There were a couple left that I had to catch up on and then submit them to Keith.

Journal #8: 4/21/14 - 5/4/14 These last two weeks went by really quickly and I got a lot accomplished. On Monday April 21, I had a corn hole tournament from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and the turn out was actually pretty nice. I let each team play one round and automatically advance to another game. Then they would play another team and the winners would move onto a winning bracket and the losers moved down to the losers bracket. And once they lost within those smaller brackets they were done for good. At the end of the tournament, there ended up being two sets of winners, winners of the winning bracket and winners for the losing bracket. The winners got t shirts and gift cards

as their prizes. After the tournament was done, there were a few things I had left to do with Keith before I was done with my internship for the semester. There were some forms left that I needed to do on line from some of the last programs we had done, including my corn hole tournament. Then I spent lots of hours in the shed and closet of butcher doing inventory checks for Keith on all the equipment. I had to go through a list making sure all the numbers were correct and if anything new had been added I needed to add it to the list online.
