WAITING LINES AT PUBLIC HOSPITALS
AND DOCTORS ARE TOO LONG
INTRODUCTION
Millions of people around the world visit hospitals but have to wait for a ridiculosly long
time, which means patients with serious underlying problems that only doctors could
identify would have to wait behind people with minor illnesses. If anything serious happens
the doctors and nurses could face disciplinary action, the hospital could lose its reputation,
but above all the patient could lose their life.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
To provide patients with a quick and convinient service, and to ensure a healthier and a
happier community.
3.2 Industry Analysis: health care/medical industry
Industry: the medical/healthcare industry consists of hospitals and doctors etc.
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: low People get sick and injured at any time,
depending on how serious the condition of the
patient they usually do not have all the time in
the world to choose a hospital or medical care
provider, so they will have to settle on the closest
one and will usually pay the bills after. Therfore
buyer power is low
Supplier power: High Because there is not an abundance of hospitals in

3

3
every city and and not everyone has a hospital in
the immdiate vicinity, people have to settle for
the closest hospital, they do not get a choice
unless they want to risk losing their loved one,
usually money is out of the question when
helping a loved one. Therefore the supplier
power is high.
Threat of new entrants: low the costs associated with opening up a new
hospital or a clinic is very high, also the medical
industry is run my monopolies, therefore the
barriers to entry are very high which causes
companies to be inclined not to enter the
industry. Therefore the threat of new entrants is
low.
Threat of substitutes: High In the pharmaceutical sector of the industry the
competion is high, this is because after the patent
expires on a certain drug any company can begin
to copy the drug, therefore the drug will become
generic and the company that originally made it
will not be the only one to supply the drug.
Therefore threat of substitutes is high. Because
hospitals are usually spaced far apart the threat
of subsitutes is low also because people can not
afford to be picky when choosing where to g
incase of emergency.
Rivalry among existing
competitors:
Low In an area there is usually one hospital, so if I
person needs to go to a hospital the one in their

4

4
area will be the one they go to as it is more
convinient and the patitient will be seen quicker.
The same will happen in hospitals in other areas
too. Therefore there isnt much rivalry among
exsisting competitors. (Opoku 2011)
Overall attractiveness of the industry: The medical industry is not a very attractive industry
for entrepreneurs to enter as all segments (insurance, pharmaceutical and hospitals) are run
by monopolies with strong barriers to entry and high start up costs which would most likely
end up with these new businesses failing.
3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs
Customers of the medical industry is everyone, from babies to senior citizens an all in
between. Every person at one stage in their life needs medical attention. Patients enter
hospitals wanting to have their conditions assessed but they have to wait for a ridiculously
long time. According to Stempniak (2013) patients have to wait more than four hours in
emergency departments. Also according to Hing and Buhiya (2009) an average patients
wait in the United States just to be consulted is anywhere between 46.6 minutes and 58.1
minutes. This could have detrimental effects on patitents with underlying problems that
nurses can not detect.
3.4 The Product and Service
Even though the Ministry of Health is trying to reduce wait times (Ministry of Health 2013) a
solution to cut down the waiting times is an app for smart phones, where people just pay
two dollars to download the app. After downloading the app they can book appointments
at any hospital at any location and at any available time, this will satisfy the patients needs
as they wont have to wait close to an hour to be consulted, instead they can just come in for
the time they booked for. People with less serious conditions can use the app so as to give
the people with serious conditions top priority as they will not need to book. The app will
notify the user if there is any delay so they wont have to wait in the waiting room. This app
is a convinient as we all own or know someone that owns a smartphone nowadays. Thus

5

5
causing the workload of hospital staff to decrease and so the wait times in the hospitals will
be reduced greatly and customers will be satisfied.
3.5 Suppliers and Partners
A supplier supports a business by providing them with goods or services they need in order
to aid in the creation of another good or to sell as a finished good, eg. A supplier for Apple
products sold in JB Hi-Fi would be Apple Inc. For the mobile app a supplier would be a
company like Accella who specialize in making apps for companies. All that is needed to be
done is submit a proposal and meeting are set up for both parties to discuss the app.
(Accella2014). Partners are other companies that have an alliance that is mutually
beneficial. A partner for the mobile app would be the Apple Inc. App Store or Google Play
for Android phones. They will market and sell the app, all while generating profits for
themselves and your company. Another partner would be hospitals if they chose to
integrate this technology. They would benefit from this app greatly as the hospital waiting
lines will be greatly reduced, therefore patients will be happy as they do not have to wait so
long and more and more people will buy the app so that your company gains profits.
3.6 Strategy: Focused Low Cost
The generic stategy our company is using is the focused low cost strategy. We would use
this strategy because the app is low costing at two dollars and is also for use in a narrow
market as only people with illnesses would use it or whose family memebers are ill.
3.7 Value Chain Activity: Market and Sell the product or Service
The most important value chain activity for this business is Market and Sell the product or
service. This is because for the product to provide any benefit the creators or the patients,
we need to market our product to the App stores like App Store for Apple users and Google
Play for android users. If we successfully market th app to these App stores, they will buy
our product and sell it. Without marketing this app wont be sold to millions of customers
and therefore people will still have to wait in lines for a long time and hospitals will still be
over crowded.
3.8 Business Processes

6

6
3.8.1. APPLICATION TESTING ANALYSIS PROCESS- for this app to work flawlessly it needs to be
tested first though trials. To do this we would have to test every part of the app. This would
be done by combing all parts of the app together to test for bugs and glitches. The app has
to be efficient as it will be the link between doctors and patients.

3.8.2. APPLI CATI ON MARKETING MANAGEMENT PROCESS it is essential that we sell this app
to the App sellers, to do this our marketing has to be effective so that these companies buy
this app from us.

3.9.1. APPLICATION TESTING ANALYSIS PROCESS
Recording patient Appointment Details
Transferring patient details into hospital database
3.9.2 APPLICATION MARKETING MANAGEMENT PROCESS
Using budgeted money for marketing
Product goals met customers needs.

3.10 Systems

3.10.1. CUSTOMER FEEDBACK ANALYSIS SYSTEM Customers can give feedback in the app
stores and Google Play, the system will send the feedback to us and we will be able to see
which areas needs an improvement so that customers remain happy and we continue to
make profit, and so we meet our product goals.

3.10.2. BUDGET DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM This will take into account all of the firms financial
information and provide us with a budget that will let us carry out our marketing plan as we
will have enough funds to carry it out.
3.10.3. APPOINTMENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM this system will ensure us that the customers
appointment details are correctly enterd into the database, so that the hospital knows
about the customers appointment, this will reduce waiting times.

CONCLUSION
This new application will be able to reduce hospital wait times all around the world. This will
mean that people dont have to wait in lines to see doctors, they can just come in at the
time they have booked for, this means customers will be satisfied. IT in this organsiation and
in the wider medical industry is invaluable, this app can save lives because people with
underlying issues will be seen immediately and will not be stuck behind people with minor
illness. The application will provide patients with a quick and convinient way of booking
appointments and will ensure a healthier and a happier community.
