2. SECTION TWO: CONVENTIONS
2.1 Axes and Grooves conventions:
INCLI2 uses the following conventions:
1) Axes orientation:
Measurements and relevant processed data are referred to a Cartesian system
(X-Y) as follows:

2) Grooves Orientation
The Azimuth of the reference groove (groove nr. 1) is defined as shown in the
followiing sketches:

Axis X EAST geographic
Axis Y NORTH geographic

Users guide
Pag. 7 of 36
iNCLi2 iNCLi2
The Azimuth is the angle between North and the reference groove. The sign
convention for the Azimuth is defined as follows.
- if North is between grooves 1 and 2, the angle is positive (positive=counter
clockwise direction)
- if North is between grooves nr. 1 and groove nr. 4, the angle is negative
(negative=clockwise direction).
The Azimuth angle will always be <= 45 since the reference grove is the one
closest to the North direction.
However, special site conditions, for example site specific reference axes, may
require that another groove has to be defined as the reference;
Azimuth angle may become greater the 45. However the sign convention given
above must be maintained to insure that the measurement data is processed and
interpreted correctly.
Assuming the reference groove as per point 2, the grooves are defined as
follows:
- Groove 1: the reference groove
- Groove 2: 90 clockwise from groove 1
- Groove 3: groove at 180 from groove 1
- Groove 4: groove at 180 from groove 2
3) Reference wheel
Each inclinometric probe has a reference wheel which is specified by the
manufacturer. The reference wheel is used to insure that the probe is correctly
orientated in the casing during measurements. This is essential for correct
processing and interpretation of the measurement data.
2.2. Readings convention
1) Readings
Readings have a label that indicates the position of the reference wheel relative to the
respective grooves in the casing when the measurements are taken. The terminology is as
follows:
- Reading taken with the reference wheel in groove 1: reading A1 e B1
Users guide
Pag. 8 of 36
iNCLi2 iNCLi2
- Reading taken with the reference wheel in groove 2: reading A2 e B2
- Reading taken with the reference wheel in groove 3: reading A3 e B3
- Reading taken with the reference wheel in groove 4: reading A4 e B4

2) Reading counter
All the readings taken inside a casing at different depths are numbered consecutively starting
from ground level even when measurements are taken in the bottom-to-top mode. 3)
Reading sign convention
The measurement sign is according to the probe convention. INCLI2 enables to change the
convention according to the used probe.
The default convention is as follows:
The A Reading is positive (A+): when the bottom of the probe is considered fixed and the
top is inclined in the direction of the reference wheel; the reading is negative (A-) when the
top of the probe is inclined in the opposite direction;
The B Reading positive (B+): when the bottom of the probe is considered fixed and the
top is inclined in a direction 90 clockwise from the reference wheel; the reading is
negative (B-) when the top of the probe is inclined in the opposite direction.

NOTE: SISGEO probes convention is opposite to the previous one.
2.3. Constants:
INCLI2 uses the following constants:
1) Probe sensitivity factor K
K is the sensitivity factor for the probe. It is a constant that multiplies the sine of the
inclination angle to obtain the instrument reading, i.e.
Instruments reading = K x sin
he default value ok K is equal to 20.000.
2.4. Spiral
INCLI2 accepts spiral data to correct inclinometric measurement for spiral twist at the
installed casing.
The sign of the spiral measurements must be introduced according to groove orientation.
The default orientation convention considers as positive a rotation of the grooves clockwise
from top to bottom.

Select the Correction mode, the Channels to be corrected and the Type of correction.
The Type of Correction menu presents the choice Global for correcting the whole file of
data and Depth intervals which will open another windows to select the number of data
interval and depths.
As an example, by selecting 2 intervals it s possible to correct data between 5 and 12 m and
between 25 and 35 m, whilst all the other data remain as collected.
Afterward it is necessary to select the channels which must be corrected, by selecting the
relevant labels. If the measurements has not been performed on the 4 grooves, only the
channels relevant to the used grooves will be active.
At the end the type of correction has to be selected.
Using the Offset correction, the value indicated into the relevant box will be added to the
original measurements, for the selected channels only and according to the global or
interval type of correction..
In the example below, a global correction of measurements in grooves A1 and A3 will be
applied. The amount of correction will be -15 digits (i.e. to each original value a quantity
equal to -15 digits will be added).

The plots mode start with the selection of the type of processing:

The Cumulative displacement reduction shows current measurements with respect to the
reference one, by summing all the local displacements measured.
Users guide
Pag. 26 of 36
iNCLi2 iNCLi2
The Incremental displacement reduction shows displacement relevant to each single depth;
this type of plot is useful to identify depths where movements occur.
The Absolute reduction is used to determine the actual position of the casing with respect
to the vertical axis.

The Displacement vs. time reduction shows the trend of movement versus time at a certain
depth.
After selection the type of processing, it is requested to select the direction of calculation

By selecting the From bottom type, the bottom of the casing is considered to be fixed;
selecting the From top the top of the casing is considered to be fixed.
The Lines layout option enables to plot lines in different colors or symbols whilst the Plot
area layout and Plots make it possible to select which graphs to show and their
characteristics.

Afterward it is necessary to import measurements to be processed. From the File menu the
reference measurement as well as the measurements to processed have to be selected.
In case of Absolute choice the measurement to be processed has to be selected only.
When selecting the reference measurement or the one to be processed, the file selection
windows will open.

If the Absolute reduction is selected the software present the option Polar convention 1 o

reference and as origin of the movements. Polar Convention 2 shows casing movement
assuming the top of the casing as reference and origin of the movements.

The Use corrected measures, when active, enables to load
measurements which have been corrected (see Chap. 3.5 Tools)
When all the necessary settings have been completed, pressing Plots, the windows
containing the processed measurements will be shown.

Horizontal and Vertical scales can be modified by pressing the Modify button; the Autom
button select scales automatically.
Some examples are shown below.

The Reading sequence option enables to select the groove sequence to be used in the
reduction process, after selecting the reference measurement and the ones to be processed.
Obviously this is only possible for measurements made along the 4 grooves.
It is possible to select one of the five proposed sequences or to set the sequence according
to the actual reading sequence. This option is useful, as an example, in case of casing
deformation when one couple of grooves can not be used or relevant measurements are not
reliable.

If the verticality of the casing has to be calculated, the Absolute reduction from the Type of
processing menu has to be selected as first; the measurement to be processed will be
selected afterward.

After the measurement to be processed and the type of reduction have been selected, it is
possible to select the type of graph. As default, all the three types are selected.

iNCLi2 iNCLi2

Local (East and North) and integral (East, North, Resultant and Azimuth) values are shown.
By selecting the Local and cumulative option, the same type of output as before can be
obtained referred to the vertical line. This type of output is used to obtain the verticality of the
casing.
By means of the Readings Check it is possible to display and print out the table containing
the check sum values of the performed measurements.
The Check sum is the value of the difference between measurements (in digits) taken at
different depth into different grooves, such as (A1 A3) and (B1 B3) and, in case of
measurement into the whole 4 grooves, (A2 A4) and (B2 B4) too.
The smaller these values (called Sc. A and Sc. B) the more accurate is the system and the
more reliable is the measurement. When a Sc. value overcomes a fixed threshold limit
(default value is 20 digits), a star is printed to point out that the value is greater than the limit
value.
When in a measurements a number of readings overcome the limit value, it has to be
considered as an index of possible problems related to the measuring chain (probe, cable
and read out unit) or to the casing (presence of dirt, opened couplings, ands so on).
