Sophie Rawlinson Cinematic Ideas

The genre for my storyboard was horror, I chose to do this genre as I could be creative with using only 25 shots, I chose this
genre because of how different horror stories have been made and thought of it as a chance to show how I understood
that genre of film and how creative I can be, the story of a girl being taken and then left to defend for herself was a quick
thought up story.
The mise on scene throughout the storyboard is dark clothing for the guy, as he is a villain in the story board so he needs
to seem mysterious and out of place from the rest of the background, to tell the audience that he one of the main
characters, but to also make him blend into the background so he creates a sense of darkness and is unwelcome. The girl is
dressed in dark clothes too. This is to show the audience how idiotic she is, as walking home in dark clothing means that
people are unable to see her, creating more danger for herself, it is also to show that she is a teenager dressing in young
fashionable clothing, it also links into the main character wearing the most outstanding clothing.
The settings for the shots are a park on a local estate and a wintery forest path along the side if the river, I have used the
park setting to create start the storyboard off as happy making the audience unaware as to what will become of the girl
and I have used the forest path to create an eerie feeling for the shots, this is to show a scene change can make the
audience feel a different emotion towards the story, guy and girl, as the guy will be waiting on the path for the girl and she
doesnt know. It also fits in with the genre of the storyboard, horror, as broken trees and lifeless forest are settings for
horror movies meaning I would get the best outcome for my storyboard.
Throughout the film a slight breeze can be heard, this is to add diegetic sound into the background as a tracking shot is
being used to follow the girl as she walks home, in shots 1 3 the girl is on her phone, adding a diegetic sound in, this is to
show how unaware she is of people that could be around her as she is speaking at the top of her voice, meaning she isnt
aware of her surroundings, this is all included because it adds danger. In shots 4- 12 there is no speech as the guy wants to
remain anonyms, this is done to show the audience how mysterious and creepy the guy is because of how is speechless
and unnerved about kidnapping the girl, so instead you are able to hear is the sound of heavy breathing and branches
being broken as he steps on them whilst making his way to the hiding spot, meaning tension is built because the audience
wants the girl to hear the branches being snapped, it makes the storyboard more effect as it build tension within the
audience.
22- 23 have music playing in the background which begins to build and speed up as the guy becomes close and closer to
the girl, I have chosen this sound because it get the audience on the edge of their seats as the know something is about to
happen but dont know when. For 24 the music suddenly stops making the storyboard come to a stop, this is to add
tension, as the audience would hold their breath because they are now unwillingly on the guys side as they dont want to
be heard, adding tension to the scene, but then it suddenly starts again just before shot 25 as the guy grabs the girl and
begins to take her away, this is add a rush within the audience because the music has been played again but very quickly
because of all the action taking place at one point.
The cinematography used in shots 1-3 are similar but show how the girl is making progress towards the path, tracking shot,
to make progress for the scenes but without losing sight of the girl this is a sensible camera angel to use as it shows
movement and can be used at a steady pace. I think the over the shoulder shots are the most interesting as they present
more tension within the audience as they are now seeing what the guy is seeing making them feel guilty as they are getting
a thrill from the tension. In shots 8-12 where only parts of the guy can be seen are to show how the guy has a cunning plan
to sneak out on the girl when she least expects it, this is to give the audience a different view of the guy as he fulfils his
plan smoothly and accurately, the final shots are close ups of the girls face, this is to show emotion on her face as she is
surprised from the attack as she didnt expect it.
Editing was my weaker element with the making of this story, as I had to make sure that the sequence of photos fit
together smoothly and that the transitions were appropriate. When taking the photographs I had to make sure that none
of them cut or jumped from one place to another, as the story wouldnt flow, some shots look similar as they are of the
person/people walking towards the camera so this may need to be changed. For shots 3 and 4 another shot may need to
be added as it does jump slightly from the guy to the girl, this could be mended by adding in another shot to make the
transition smoother.
