ANNUAL CURRICULUM REVIEW: Pauline and Anna tabled their Mathematics report. This year the Year 11, 12 and 13 have focused their attention towards achievement standards rather than unit standards. However the option of unit standards is made available if the need arises for an individual. Review of one of goals in the Junior school was to increase the number of Maori students achieving At or Above the National Standard for maths from 67% to 90%. Unfortunately the outcome for year-end has not been gathered for this but at mid-year the percentage at or above the was 62% which is similar to previous data gathered. For boys the goal was to increase the percentage from 72% to 85%. At mid-year there were 71% at or above the National Standard however by the end of the year this had slipped to 64%. A likely explanation for this is the number of new families that have enrolled at school. At the end of 2012 69% of Years 1-8 students were at or above the National Standard in Maths, this year in 2013 there has been no significant change. In the senior school a goal was to increase the number of boys achieving at or above from 62% to 75%. Overall this goal was met, 75% of boys in Year 9 to Year 13 combined were achieving at or above. For the Year 9 boys this goal was not met, only 57% were. Year 9 & 10 students were introduced to NCEA style questions to improve the interpretation and relational thinking that is required the outcome from this all students in year 10 have received 9 numeracy credits towards NCEA level 1. It is apparent in the Junior School that steps need to be taken to accelerate the progress of students in Mathematics with greater use of PLP and programmes such as Bump It. It was suggested that we look into the possibility of junior school teachers being involved in the ALIM professional development programme next year. John Auld has looked into this and Lawrence Area School is on the waiting list. Out of class study sessions were held for the seniors leading up to the CAT exam, which showed significant benefits to those who attended. There is an important need for awareness of attendance in class, out of class revision and commination between students, parent and teachers.
Anna also expressed her concern of events that coincide around the time of the CAT exam in Term 3, students need to be aware that they will need to be up to date if they are going to attend these events. Study classes need enhancing to be able to catch up on their work. It was discussed that a contract could be drawn up by the students/parents/management with support from the Board. An NCEA evening to be organised early next year with the input from Senior Staff.
