A Comprehensive Framework for Balanced Literacy Modeled Writing
During Modeled Writing the teacher demonstrates how to write by thinking aloud as he/she composes and interacts
with a text in front of the students. This allows students to hear the thinking that is going on during the writing process.

Guiding Principles of Modeled Writing
Modeled Writing is not an interactive time between teacher and students.
Modeled Writing is a process in which the teacher composes and interacts with text. The teacher does all of the
writing.
Modeled Writing is a time during which the teacher thinks aloud to demonstrate the writing process.
Modeled Writing is used in a large or small group setting.
Modeled Writing occurs at a quick pace for 10 minutes or less during the mini-lesson portion of Writers' Workshop.
Modeled Writing results in a readable error free text that allows for continued use. If the teacher is modeling editing
procedures a text with errors is prepared ahead of time and the teacher uses "think aloud" to expose the thinking
required for the editing process being modeled.
