1. Objective
Safely carry injured and sick people from the site to other places without making them feel pain.
2. Definition
Carry injured and sick people to other places after first-aid treatment. When moving their bodies or
carrying them to other places, dont make them feel uneasy. Keep watching their conditions until
they arrived to the destination.
3. How to carry an injured or sick person by hand
(1) How to carry alone
(a) Move an injured/sick person from the behind backward like lifting his/her hip.
(b) Carry an injured/sick person on the rescuers back, holding his/her hands crossly or in parallel.
(c) Carry under an injured/sick persons arms. For children, babies and small people, holding in
his/her side is easier to carry him/her.
(d) Use a blanket or sheet. Be careful not to press on the injured/sick persons chest and abdomen.

(e) Points
i) Carry an injured/sick person in the most appropriate method in accordance with his/her
condition, injured part and type of sickness.
ii) Try to carry an injured/sick person with several people except inevitable circumstances.
(2) How to carry with 2 people
(a) Carry an injured/sick person, holding his/her body from front and behind.
(b) Carry an injured/sick person, putting their arms behind his/her back.
(c) Points
i) Since an injured/sick persons neck may fall forward, be careful in managing the airway.
ii) 2 people adjust their pace of walking and dont make him/her feel uneasy during carrying.

(3) How to carry with 3 people
(a) Carry an injured/sick person in the order of No. 1 and No. 2.
(b) Points
i) Fall on one knee of an injured/sick persons feet side and raise one knee of his/her head side.
ii) Put all rescuers arms deeply under his/her body.
iii) All people move together.
(4) How to carry with several people
(a) Carry an injured/sick person in the order of No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3.
(b) Points
i) Fall on one knee of an injured/sick persons feet side and raise one knee of his/her head side.
ii) Put all rescuers arms deeply under his/her body.
iii) All people move together.
iv) Put arms of persons facing under the body alternately.
4. How to use something as a stretcher
(1) Blanket stretcher
(a) Fold the blanket lengthwise and set it by an injured/sick person. Fig. 1
(b) Slightly raise the body from the other side and put the blanket under the body. Fig. 1
(c) Go to the opposite side, likewise, slightly raise the body from the other side and pull
the blanket to be just under the body. Fig. 1

(d) Firmly roll the both sides of the blanket, grab the rolled part from above, and carry
the injured/sick person. Fig. 2
(2) Points
(a) To carry an injured/sick person, 6 to 8 people are required.
(b) When the injured/sick persons head shouldnt be moved, one person secures the head.
5. How to carry using a stretcher
(1) 3 people get lined up on one side of an injured/sick person and one person is on the other side.
Put him/her on a stretcher gently.
(2) Keep the injured/sick person warm. Go to each side of the stretcher so that 2 people face each
other, and fall on a knee. Then, hold the stretcher.
(3) A leader (if there isnt a leader, the person who is on the injured/sick persons head side) gives
a cue and all people lift the stretcher at the same time.

(4) With the cue of the leader, they start to walk. The person on the head side starts to walk from his
right foot and 3 others start to walk from their left feet. When put the stretcher down, follow
the reverse order of the lifting procedure.
(5) Points
(a) When carrying an injured/sick person, go his/her feet first. Shuffle their feet not to vibrate
him/her.
(b) When going up stairs, go his/her head first and when going down, go feet first. In both cases,
ensure that the stretcher always level off.
(c) When carrying the stretcher with 3 people, one person is on the feet side and 2 people are on
the head side. Fig. 1
(d) When carrying the stretcher with 2 people, pay special attention during carrying it. Fig. 2
6. How to rescue when toxic gas or smoke is produced
(1) Rescuers wear air breathing equipment and rescue an injured person with 2 people or more.
(2) As for how to wear the air breathing equipment and rescue an injured/sick person, see how to
operate the air breathing equipment.
