Circuit-breakers ensure a
high-level of system availability
Circuit-breakers are generally the
most important protective and
switchgear devices in power
distribution. At critical nodes in
the electrical power supply which
are responsible for the power
supply to entire factories or town
districts, fuseless protection of the
supply by circuit-breakers which
are ready to restart quickly are of
primary importance. Selective or
discriminative protection on vari-
ous levels of the power network
ensures a high level of system and
process availability.
In the lower current range,
comparable protective functions of
motor-protective circuit-breakers
and overload relays are provided.

No software installation!
The CurveSelect software tool
enables the representation of tripping
characteristics which correspond to
the individual switch and relay settings
using Microsoft Excel
.
As a software installation is not
required, the tool can be used without
needing administrator rights for the PC.
Important notice
The Moeller GmbH, Bonn, accepts no liability whatsoever for damage arising
from the use of the CD-ROM. Especially excluded from liability are damage to
persons, goods or assets, which may be consequential directly or indirectly
upon or in connection with the utilization of the CD-ROM.
We also point out that software/hard-ware designations and brand names of
companies mentioned are as a rule protected by law as Trade Marks and/or by
patents and Copyright or other commercial rights.

Why the comparison of characteristics?
In many electrical power net-
works the protective devices are
connected in series. The program
makes it possible to represent and
evaluate all curves at the same
time with a minimum of effort.
With a high-level of system
availability, it is expected that only
the protective device in the direct
vicinity of the equipment should
trip with a fault. This is known as
selectivity or discrimination.
Selectivity in the overload range:
The program enables a simple
assessment by comparison of the
characteristic curves in the particu-
larly important overload range.

Peculiarities for selectivity
in the short-circuit current range
The range of the electrodynamic
limit is indicated in the tripping
characteristics of this program
by a vertical dashed line for the
response value of the non-delayed
overload release. If the selectivity is
also to be observed for short-circuit
current range, the selectivity tables
which have been established by
exhaustive and extensive testing in
the Moeller main catalogue are to
be taken into consideration.
Selectivity in the short-circuit
current range:
Due to the complexity of the
electrodynamic properties of the
current limiting contacts and the
quenching mechanism, the tripping
times in the short-circuit range
cannot be calculated using this tool.

Differing variation options
with characteristic curves
Simple protective devices, such
as fuses or miniature circuit-
breakers have a non-modifiable
tripping curve (characteristic).
On overload relays or motor-
protective circuit-breakers,
the current settings of the overload
release I
r
and partly the current
settings of the non-delayed short-
circuit release I
i
may be adjustable.
The most flexible option for
matching different equipment and
operating situations are provided
by NZM and IZM circuit-breakers
with electronic releases. In addi-
tion to the currents, differing t
r
or t
sd
delay times can be selected.
Further information and
explanations regarding the physical
size can be found on page 18

Supplementary notes concerning
representation of the characteristics
The following limiting conditions
must be observed with the
evaluation of the diagrams:
All curves are represented
assuming the cold state and
without representation of the
standard-conform tolerances
of the response ranges, and the
tripping times are represented
as mean values of the
parameterized tripping
characteristic.
This representation corresponds
with the conventional characteristic
representation in many catalogues.
In the non-delayed overload release
range, the minimum command
duration is indicated, as it is the
time for which the current must
flow before a trip cannot be
prevented.
This corresponds to the melting
time (minimum melting curve)
with fuses. The current, voltage
and the phase position dependent
total opening delay, which is
comprised of the response delay,
switching delay and arc quenching
time, is not considered by the
represented curves.
Further use of the represented,
individual tripping characteristics
The characteristics can be evaluated
on the monitor and can also be
printed out. The curves may also
be copied and added to other
documents.
The same curves can be read out
directly from the memory of the
circuit-breaker NZM with electronic
releases with the precise settings.

CurveSelect:
Beginning a new project
Copy the Curve Select file
into a folder of your choice.
The file can be used for as many
projects are required.
Double click on the Curve
Select file. An Excel
workbook
consisting of several sheets
necessary for the representation
of the tripping characteristics
opens. The latest version of the
Moeller CurveSelect is available for
download free-of-charge on
the Internet.
Comprehensive information about
the program is contained in the
Read Me sheet in verschiedenen
Sprachen.
The corresponding language
versions can be selected in the
General sheet. On this sheet
General details of the project
are entered and are automatically
accepted into the representation
of the characteristic curves.
