Consumer Protection BC Cancels Travel

Licence For Global Pacific Travel

Consumer Protection BC has cancelled

the licence of Global Pacific Travel Ltd.
(Global Pacific), a travel agency located
in Surrey, BC, due to non-compliance
with BCs travel regulations.
On June 25, 2014, acting on a consumer
complaint, Consumer Protection BC
suspended Global Pacific Travels
licence, pending further investigation.
Our actions to date related to the travel
agency licence of Global Pacific Travel
have been made out of concern that the
business behaviour may cause harm to
consumers, says Tatiana ChabeauxSmith, spokesperson for Consumer
Protection BC. Our investigation is
now concluded and we believe the
business does not have the financial
stability to maintain a travel agency
licence. This is one of the reasons
why we have cancelled their licence,
effective immediately.
By law, Global Pacific Travel has 30
days to request for reconsideration of
this decision.
Information for impacted consumers:
The Travel Assurance Fund, a fund
of last resort, provides possible
compensation for consumers who did
not receive contracted travel services
purchased through a BC-licensed
travel agent. To-date, Consumer
Protection BC has received 23 claims
to the Fund as a result of this business
failure, representing an estimated
$126,000. Three of these claims have
already been processed and paid out by
Consumer Protection BC.
Travellers who have made arrangements

with Global Pacific Travel should first

confirm with their hotel, airline or other
travel provider that their travel has
been booked and paid for. If the travel
arrangements cannot be confirmed,
here are some step consumers can take
before they travel:
1. Talk to the airline, hotel or tour
operator to determine if there are options
available to rebook travel arrangements.
2. Contact a BC-licensed travel agent
to determine if they can assist with
rebooking alternative travel. To find a
licensed BC travel agent, please visit
www.travelrightsbc.ca.
In the unfortunate circumstance that
the original travel services booked

through Global Pacific Travel were not

provided and consumers are seeking a
refund, here are some steps to take:
1. If the travel services were purchased
with a credit card, call or write to the
credit card company to determine if the
charges can be reversed.
2. If separate travel insurance was
purchased, call the insurance provider
to see if they will cover the costs of the
undelivered services.
3. If these steps have been unsuccessful,
consumers may make a claim to BCs
Travel Assurance Fund with Consumer
Protection BC.
Although consumers costs may
eventually be recovered through other

Bainimarama Met With Mixed

Reception In NZ
Fiji's Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama
was met with mixed reception in
Manukau, Auckland on day one of his
three-day campaign drive in New Zealand
for the September 17 election.
TVNZ reports that over a thousand
supporters turned up to give
Bainimarama a warm welcome while
a crowd of around 30 protesters had
to be moved away by security. The
protesters reportedly said they wanted
a public debate to have Bainimarama
questioned and respond accordingly.

Radio New Zealand reported that

Bainimarama referred to the crowd
of protesters as a "bunch of losers."
Bainimarama then had a chance to
provide those who listened about
progress the country has made and
what his government has achieved
during its reign.
It was Bainimarama's first visit to
New Zealand in eight years after
travel restrictions were lifted recently.
Bainimarama is expected back in Fiji
next week.

$92M Cement Factory

THE opening of the newly-constructed
Tengy cement factory in Lami will
address the chronic shortage of cement
in Fiji.
This was highlighted by Prime Minister
Rear Admiral (Ret) Voreqe Bainimarama
during the opening of the factory.
Rear Admiral (Ret) Bainimarama
said the Tengy Cement Company had
embarked on a $US50million ($F92m)
investment that had created 15 local
jobs in the area.
He said the opening would drop
the price of the important building
material, which would also reduce the
cost of building a home and any other
construction.
"We all know that the construction
boom in Fiji has led to an increased
demand for cement and other building
materials," he said.
"Unfortunately the local industry hasn't

always been able to keep pace with this

demand and at times we have had to
turn to expensive imports.
"We expect this inconsistency to be a
thing of the past. Not only will Tengy
help stabilise the local market but I
understand that they have plans to
eventually export to neighbouring
countries as well."
He said the key was to make sure
Fiji stayed on track, adding it would
only get better so long as Fijians kept
their eye on bigger picture of working
together as a nation.
"I encourage other Fijian businesses
to follow Tengy's example. Smart
investors know that now is the time
to reap the rewards of a vastly better
investment climate.
"Now is the time to invest in Fiji's
future, the economy is taking off, do
not get left behind."

Plans For Second Mansion, Villa

CHINESE
investor
Great-han
International Company Ltd is looking
at expanding its investment portfolio
in Fiji following its multi-million
dollar plan to build the No.1 (Fiji)
International Mansion in Suva.
The company's sales manager, May
Zhao, said they were committed to
providing local and overseas investors
with cost-effective freehold real estate
property.
"Our company is looking for other
investments. We will emphasise on
investing in real estate property and
we are planning to develop No.2 (Fiji)
International Mansion and a high-end
yacht villa project.
"We have already started pre-selling
for our No.1 (Fiji) International
Mansion apartments in Suva and we
are planning to complete the project at
the end of 2016."
Ms Zhao said the company was willing
to offer employment opportunities for
local and overseas workers.

She said the price of land and property

along Princess Rd increased by about
30 per cent in the past year.
"The scopes for the apartment
appreciation are great and considerable
in this area. Besides, the growing
demand for renting apartments exceeds
the supply in this area with rental price
soaring by about 30 per cent in the past
year," Ms Zhao said.
She said Fiji's natural environment was
a big attraction for investors.
"In our opinion, Fiji is the most purest
country in the world because it has the
most beautiful natural scenery.
"The living environment is healthy
with unspoilt beauty and the people are
the friendliest in the world," she said.
Meanwhile, the No.1 (Fiji) International
Mansion will have 63 luxurious units.
Ms Zhao said 51 units would be about
120 square metres with a living area
and balcony.
"10 units would be about 105sqm and
two units would be about 98sqm."

note that was read by the company
general manager sales and marketing,
Chandima Gunawardana.
Mr ONeile said they would now be
able to offer a remarkable experience
of fast internet at the most affordable
prices to their customers.
We pride ourselves in offering the
most competitive pricing and value for
money to our customers, he said.
Inkk Mobile has come a long way since
its initiation seven years ago living up
to its commitment of introducing the
best mobile deals for our customers.
We acknowledge our customers and
partners for their loyalty as we enter
the new and exciting world of mobile
internet and broadband services.
The 4G network uses 1800MHz
frequency. The rollout of Inkks 4G
products have already started at its
retail outlets and dealer locations,
already stocked with 4G devices.
Mr Gunawardana stressed the first
phase of the roll out will have our 4G

services available in most of Suva,

Lami, Nausori and some parts of
Nasinu and Nadi.
We are moving to the other locations
in the second phase soon to allow all
our customers to benefit from the 4G
LTE technology.
Inkk business development manager,
Praneel Dutt said Inkk Mobile would
be offering the fourth generation of
wireless standards.
This simply means that Inkk 4G
provides ultra-fast speeds and our
customers get the fastest mobile
internet experience, Mr Dutt said.
4G provides faster speeds than 3G,
making it suitable for all type of high
speed applications and services.
He highlighted that they basically want
to switch customers from 3G to 4G so
they get a feel of the new service with
affordable deals.
Inkk Mobile is leasing the network
space from Vodafone Fiji without
investing in network infrastructure so
that it could offer no frills value for
money mobile products and services.
The company has 250,000 loyal
customers who enjoy the best value for
money deals with regular promotional
deals.
VALUEFONE Limited managing
director Kevin Yuen said this new
service would be launched today at his
outlet and would also improve sales
in the 4G range of mobile phones and
devices.

Australia To Co-Lead Multinational Observation Group With

Indonesia, India And PNG

Australia is sending a team of observers

It will be the first election in Fiji since
Frank Bainimarama seized power in a

The Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says

She's appointed former Defence and
Workplace Relations Minister Peter
Reith to lead the Australian team,
saying he has a "strong interest in
supporting democracy internationally."
Mr Reith says it's a very important
moment for Fiji.
"It's a good opportunity for Fiji, and
Australia is keen to be of assistance,"
he said.
"From a broad perspective, the
objective here is to make a decision
at the end of the election, to report
on whether or not the outcome of the
general election broadly represents the
view of the Fijian people.
"That's the broad objective, and we're
looking forward to being involved."
Ms Bishop says the Multinational

The Multinational Observer Group also

USA and Canada had indicated they

$60M Investment Boost

FIJIAN Holdings Unit Trust (FHUT)
recorded about $60million worth of
local investments at the end of June
this year.
The trust has been investing in the local
economy since 2001.
FHUT general manager Sowani
Tuidrola said they had been paying
dividends to all unit holders who had
been with them since they started.
"The total amount of funds that have
already been paid to our unit holders
in the form of dividends is more than
$17m for the past 14 years and we tend
to grow year in and year out.
"Our average dividend rate is sitting at
about 5.5 per cent.

He said they were part of the

financial capital markets master plan
development in Fiji.
Since 2001, Mr Tuidrola said the total
number of investors was about 200 and
this had increased to 4500 with the bulk of
unit holders engaged in retail investment.
And most of those, he said, were
rural dwellers and a few were from
the working group comprising civil
servants and other companies.
From July last year, he said, they had
reduced the minimum entry of 250 to
100 units and anyone who joined the
employees deduction scheme could
start deductions for investment from
$10 every week.

New Cardiology Centre Opens

WE deliver, we serve and we walk the
talk without making false promises.
These were the words of the Prime
Minister Rear Admiral (Ret) Voreqe
Bainimarama who officially opened
the new government-funded operation
theatre and a cardiology centre at the
CWM Hospital in Suva.
Rear Admiral (Ret) Bainimarama said
the commissioning of phase one of the
refurbishment of the operation theatre
and cardiology centre had a standard
of effective and quality deliverance of
health services to the people.
He said the opening of the operation
centre would enable the people of Fiji
with heart problems to receive better
care and services.
He added the recruiting of more
nurses, doctors and skilled medical
surgeons would minimise the number
of Fijians going out of the country to
receive heart operations, as the CWM
Hospital was on its way to becoming
the cardiac hub operation centre for the
Pacific region.
The new heart operation centre was
accomplished with a gift of $200,000
by the Indian Government.

August 20 Deadline For Polling

Adjustments

Following the close of the voter

registration drive for the 2014 general
elections, the Fijian Elections Office
announced a deadline of August 20 for
registered voters who want to correct
or change their polling venues.
As you are aware, in the 2014
General Election, a voter can only vote
at a polling station he/she has been
assigned to.
Each polling station will have up to 500
totals of assigned voters, Supervisor
of Elections Mohammed Saneem said.
Voters who would like to change their
polling venue can do so by filling
in a form and handing it in at any
Fijian Elections Office convenient to
them. The form is also available for
download from the FEO website www.
electionsfiji.gov.fj and is also available
at any nearest Voter Information
Centre.
After August 20th registered voters
cannot make any further changes to
their polling stations as we will be

finalising and printing the voter rolls

to be distributed to the various polling
stations. Registered voters can simply
txt their Voter ID number to 545 to find
out where they are voting or download
this information and ascertain where
they have to vote from the Fijian
Elections Office website.
If you are still unsure of where you
are to vote on the 17th September, send
a free sms to 545 with your voter ID
number to find out your polling venue.
If your venue is incorrect you can visit
a voter information centre or call 545 to
find out where our centres are located,"
Saneem added.
There are 18 Voter Information Centres
located around the country and the
Elections Office will be opening more
temporary voter information centres
after August 20.
Approximately 70,000 registered
voters have already confirmed and
made adjustments to their polling
venue information.

for $3.45million.
Outrigger Sunseekers Hotel along
Waimanu Rd boasts an outstanding
view of the Suva Harbour and
surrounding mountains.
And while the hotel celebrated its

from local and overseas investors
looked promising.
"Everything has limits and we have
come to a limit. We have enjoyed 95
per cent occupancy and we've been
receiving reasonable offers and we're
quite happy.
"We did a major renovation in

2010 and have 20 rooms providing

He said business had been positive
and their central location and close
proximity to the town area, swimming
pool and hospital was an advantage.
He said it was important to
continue investments in the tourism
sector, predicting a shortage of
accommodation services in Suva "in
the near future".
"We employ about 20 staff members
but their jobs at the hotel will depend
on the new owners.
"We'd like to see that they keep all
staff," said Mr Sukhdeo, adding tenders
close on August 31.

FP Nominee Keen To End Coup

Culture

At 23 years of age, Anishni Chand may

be the youngest candidate to contest
the September 17 election, but she is
determined to champion youth issues
and serve the country by getting rid of
the coup culture.
Chand was among four people named
by the National Federation Party as it
finalises plans ahead of the elections.
We need transparency. That has
motivated me to be part of the NFP,
Chand said.
Being the youngest candidate means I
understand the issues youths face.
If NFP is elected into government and
it has candidates of our caliber, we can
tackle issues faced by young people to
ensure they have the best services.
Issues Chand said she would want
to focus on include the rising
unemployment rate especially among

youths, ensure appointments done

are based on merit, high cost of
living, sustainability of environment,
transparency and accountability among
others.
I will want to ensure that the three arms
of government that is the legislative,
judicial and executive arms should
start functioning as separate entities to
ensure every citizen gets fair justice.
With only four weeks to campaign
before the election on September
17, Chand says she is ready for the
challenge. It will be tough. We will
have to get a lot of media coverage. It
is going to be difficult, but we are ready
for the challenge. Our candidates and
supporters are already out there on the
field.
They are doing work already for the
September 17 election.

discrepancies surfaced after an audit.
Swamy was charged with three counts of
general dishonesty - obtaining a gain, one
count of obtaining financial advantage
and one count of causing a loss.
The court heard that on April 2013,
Swamy was given a blank cheque
to purchase a digital camera for the
company. She entered $576 and bought
two cameras. She later changed the
quantity amount on the receipt to one
and made it appear as if one camera
cost $576.
On the second count, she purchased an

Tour Managers Host

Agents
Tour Managers Fiji organised
an exclusive meeting for its top
travel agents, Online Travel
agents (OTA), and important
travel media to unveil its soonto-be released Chinese Travel
Guide 2014/2015.
This event was held at the Qunar.com,
one of Chinas largest OTA companies
with a database of over 250 million
users and an estimated of USD 2 billion
this week.
This event is part of Tour Managers 7
city strategy of China focusing on its
top travel agents, online and offline
beginning on August 10 and ending on
August 21.
Charge De Affairs First Secretary
Josefa Tuima from the Fijian Embassy
in Beijing said the Fijian government
has continued to strongly support
promotion of Fiji in China.
China inbound travel to Fiji has
continued to grow from strength to

strength at a healthy double-digit rate

of growth annually.
He thanked the travel agents and
important partners of Tour Managers
present for their continued support
whilst also commending Tour
Managers for their investment in
promoting Fiji in China.
Evidence of this investment is the
upcoming Chinese Travel Guide
2014/2015. Tour Managers is working
very closely with Tourism Fiji and its
core partners in China to provide this
important travel guide to consumers
and the travel trade.
A report by Chinese International
Travel Monitor 2014 released by
Hotels.com says that 53 per cent of
Chinese international travelers use
travel guides.
This is especially true when they
research on international travel and
make a decision on which destination
to travel to.

are simply being rediscovered so

the language that is used and how
you capture peoples thinking that
becomes very powerful.
On whether other fields like religion
and spirituality played a major part in
management, Dr Vachani said these
were often relegated to the fringes.
There are always things there are
coming from other fields and will draw
from spirituality of Eastern religion, a
protestant work ethic and philosophy
that inform management.
He said arts and culture can also be
brought in.
Management schools also have the
opportunity to be a lot more flexible
so I think its important for management
schools to interact with people like you
who are able to interpret and analyse.
When asked about the 2008 global
crisis, Dr Vachani said it was not
necessarily a failure of management
but that of institutions.
In society there is a kind of change
in how much governments should
interfere with the economy it used
to be that after the great depression
the reason given was for Government
to interfere a lot more. As a result a
lot of industries became controlled in
the US. As a result there was a lot of
inefficiencies.

Felix Anthony Says He Was Never

Paid A Salary By The FTUC

The Leader of the Peoples Democratic

Party Felix Anthony is claiming he was
never paid by the Fiji Trades Union
Congress as General Secretary.

In a press conference, Anthony said he

is appalled to see a Fiji Sun front page
article saying that he was paid salary
by FTUC for services to its members
and workers of the country.
He has raised concern that the
newspaper company made no effort to
present a balanced report.
Meanwhile, the FTUC has demanded
Fiji Sun to publish a front page apology
on this issue or they will be left with no
option but to file legal action against the
journalist and the newspaper concerned.
However, Fiji Sun Publisher and CEO
Peter Lomas said he had not received
a copy of the FTUC statement until
it was sent to him by the Fijivillage
newsroom.
He said Daniel Urai seemed to be
trying to distract from the key issue of
the Fiji Sun report.
Lomas said the Fiji Sun had already
clarified Anthonys FTUC status and
reported that his union job at the time
was with the Fiji Sugar and General
Workers Union.

Chinese Company Invests In

Piggery And Resort
Asian investors continue to spend
millions in setting up businesses in Fiji.
Tian Tian Tian Yuan Company (Fiji)
Limited of Shaoxing city in China
said it is investing in a piggery project
at Vakabalea in Navua and a resort at
Pacific Harbour.
Company general manager Ray Zhao
said they had the official ground
breaking ceremony for the piggery a
few weeks back.
The owner, who is currently in China,
bought the 45 acres of land in April this
year.
Mr Zhao highlighted they target to
farm 10,000 pigs in the future and
produce 10,000 every year.
Company staff member Lu Wang said:
Fiji is a beautiful place and we found
there is a demand for pigs.
Actually we got the figures from
Biosecurity Authority of Fiji that every
year Fiji needs to import some bacon
and ham products from overseas.
The Fiji government also wants to
increase the local production and my
boss was directly interested in investing
in Fiji in this particular product.
Suva City Council special administrator
Chandu Umaria said: Its good to see
overseas investors coming in to Fiji
and investing in manufacturing and
other businesses.
Even in Suva theres hardly any shops
empty. Most are taken up by Asian

businessmen especially in Cumming

Street and Marks Street.
That shows the confidence they have
in Fiji which is good for the country
and the people of Suva.
The Chinese company invested $1
million for the Navua land.
At the moment they are still arranging
for the building materials to be shipped
from China to Fiji.
We will start building the farm
facilities by the end of August. By the
end of the year we should have the
farm up and running, Mr Wang added.
Import
There are plans to import the pigs
from Australia. We are still dealing
with the piggery farms in Australia and
also the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji to
get the approval to ship it over.
There will be local employment as
well because we will be looking after
10,000 pigs at the farm we will surely
need many workers.
The company will be targeting the
local market for its products with an
expansion plan to export to Tonga and
nearby Pacific Island countries even
exporting back to China.
The piggery farm is not our only
project here we also bought a land
at Pacific Harbour so are planning
to build a resort and also real estate
for that we will need a lot of local
labour.

CCF Invited To Apply For

Approval
Supervisor of Elections Mohammed
Saneem says the Fiji Citizens
Constitutional Forum is welcomed to
submit for approval an election-related
publication entitled "Discussion Paper
on Free and Fair Elections".
The publication had to be retracted
early this month because it had not
been given the necessary approval. It
was released at a CCF forum in Suva
late last month, but had to be removed
because it had not been approved by
either the Supervisor or the Electoral

Commission as per Section 115 of the

Electoral Decree.
Saneem said the Fijian Elections Office
deals with every application on a case
by case basis. "We don't have a blanket
approval system and we don't have a
mechanism where if you don't comply
with one we will reject all," Saneem
said.
"We will deal with all fairly."
CCF is believed to be under
investigation by FICAC over the
publication.

Security Features On Ballot Paper

People will not be able to tamper or
make their own ballot paper without
the Fijian Elections Office noticing
it to try and tamper the results of the
September 17 elections.
Deputy Supervisor of Elections
Michael Clancy confirmed that the
ballot papers to be used in next months
election will have security features.

Apart from the ballot paper prints

having a font size of 17, Clancy
confirmed that it would also contain
security features.
Security features which I am unable
to tell you will also be present in the
ballot papers so people will not be
able to make their own ballot papers,
Clancy said.

I Will Remain FLP Leader - Chaudhry

Mahendra Chaudhry has confirmed
that he will remain as the Leader of the
FLP although he cannot contest next
months elections.
Chaudhry said while he knows that he
cannot go for a parliamentary seat, he
will lead the party to the September
polls.
When asked on whether he sees this as
a wise move as he will lead the party
with people knowing that he cannot go
into parliament, Chaudhry said this is
the strategy based on the assessment of
what their supporters want.
We asked him on whether there is a
standby parliamentary leader if they
win the elections as Chaudhry cannot
take up the position.
He said the decision will be made later.
Chaudhry first took part in a byelection for the North Central Indian
Seat in December 1985.
He lost that election.
He was elected to Parliament for the
first time in the 1987 general election
and appointed Minister for Finance
and Economic Planning in the coalition
government of Timoci Bavadra.

That government held office for barely

a month as Sitiveni Rabuka carried out
a military coup in 1987.
Chaudhry then led the FLP into
elections in 1992 and 1994.
In the 1999 election, Chaudhry led the
FLP Peoples Coalition to victory and
became the Prime Minister.
He was then removed from office after
the 2000 coup.
In 2001, he led the Fiji Labour Party
again to the elections and lost to
Laisenia Qarases former SDL Party.
In the 2006 elections, the Fiji Labour
Party led by Chaudhry increased its share
of votes to 39% and won four more seats
to make a total of 31 but it was unable to
unseat the Qarase Government.
Following the December 2006 coup,
Chaudhry accepted the post of Minister
of Finance in the interim government
led by Voreqe Bainimarama in January
2007.
Chaudhry resigned from the post on
18th August, 2008.
He is now leading a political campaign
as one of the strongest critics of the
Bainimarama led government.

Fears For Tourism As Fiji,

Solomon Islands Dispute Escalates

Tourism organisers say a dispute

between the national airlines of Fiji
and Solomon Islands is pushing up the
cost of travel in the Pacific.
The standoff has escalated to the point
where all flights between the two
countries have been suspended.
The head of the South Pacific Tourism
Organisation Ilisoni Vuideketi is
calling for an immediate end to the
dispute.
"The impact right now is that travelling
time has gone up... and the cost of such
travel has also gone up," he said.
"So what I'm telling them is why don't
they find out a way forward, find out
a mutually beneficial arrangement...
instead of one airline coming up and
then flexing their muscles."
The dispute between the two countries
began when the Solomons' Civil
Aviation Authority refused a request
for extra flights to Honiara.
Fiji Airways retaliated by stopping

some flights from Solomon Islands.

Mr Vuideketi says data isn't yet
available on whether traveller numbers
are down but he fears bad news.
"Any disruptions in air services does
have a direct impact on tourist travels,"
he said.
Mr Vuideketi says the cancellation of
flights is also making it more difficult
for visitors from places like Europe
and the United States to plan holidays
around the Pacific.
"The airlines are key stakeholders
to tourism growth in the region and
they should come down and discuss
properly how they can resolve these
issues," he said.
Mr Vuideketi says relations are
normally positive between the two
countries and a political intervention
may be needed to end the dispute.
"Fiji does look to the Solomon Islands
like a big brother and assist Solomon
Islands in many areas," he said.

Fiji Airways Gives Amadeus Full

Content Fares

Fiji Airways has signed a contract

with Amadeus, a leading technology
provider for the global travel industry,
which ensures travel agencies in Pacific
and around the world can search and
book the full range of Fiji Airways
fares via Amadeus.
Amadeus-connected travel agents now
have access to the same range of air
fares that Fiji Airways offers through
all its sales channels.
Fiji Airways managing director/
chief executive, Stefan Pichler,
said Amadeus extensive global
travel agency network covering
195 countries made them an ideal
distribution partner.
We want to put Fiji on the global map.

We have to make sure that our growing

network and our attractive fares are
available everywhere around the globe
for sale, he said.
Were confident this new deal with

Fetus Left In Park

POLICE are searching for a person

believed to have dumped a fetus at the
Shirley Park grounds.
The corpse, wrapped in plastic and
newspaper, was found in a rubbish bin
by a contracted council worker.
Police West spokeswoman Naina Ragigia
said the find was reported to the Shirley Park
Police Community Post by the cleaner.
"We have yet to determine how long the
fetus was in the rubbish bin but we are
conducting an extensive investigation
into finding the person who might have
left the corpse there," she said.
"We can confirm that the baby was
already deceased when it was found
and that it was an iTaukei."
Council worker Harry Singh found the
corpse.
He said this was the first time he had
ever found something so gruesome in
his 17 years as a public servant.
"I hope that the police find the person
because I just think it's inhuman to

leave a child dead like that," he said.

Meanwhile, Mrs Ragigia said the
police were also working with medical
officials at the Lautoka Hospital.
"According to our initial reports, the child
was about 30 weeks old or seven months
and we will await the post-mortem report
to determine how the child died.
"Our investigations began with our
officers questioning people at the park
and those that might have seen or know
any information that would help us
with our investigations.
"Because the fetus was found in a
public place, our investigation will
be very wide but we have begun an
extensive inquiry into this case."
Mrs Ragigia said members of the
public who might have information
vital to the case should contact their
nearest police station.
"If anyone knows something, please
come forward because a life of an
innocent child was taken away."

14 Countries To Be Part Of
Observer Group

A total of 14 countries have been

confirmed to be part of the MultiNational Observers Group to observe
Fijis September 17 election.
Countries involved are Australia,
Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and
India which will also oversee the
process as co-leaders.
The other countries to be part of the
group are Israel, South Africa, Brazil,
Russia, Turkey, Japan, New Zealand,
Korea, Iran and the United Kingdom.
Two other countries, USA and Canada
had indicated they would like to send
in observers as well, and would finalise
their participation soon after they have
been sent the Terms of Reference.
Elections Minister Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum and Acting Australian High
Commissioner Glen Miles were on

hand to sign the TOR for the observer

group at the Suvavou House in Suva.
"They will not only observe the election
day itself but also the days leading up
to the election," Sayed-Khaiyum said.
"There were anomalies highlighted in
the European Union 2006 report and
our stance has always been that we
[do not] want those anomalies to exist
anymore and this scope of the MOG
will provide the right forum or the right
mechanism through which they observe
and assess the various processes of the
Fijian Elections Office."
The observers group is expected to start
soon. They will stay on to observe the
reconciliation of ballot papers, the counting
process and dissemination of results.
All countries will also be responsible
for all costs in their observing duties.

Fiji Ranked Highest In Cardiac

Mortality

Fiji has been ranked highest in cardiac

disease mortality rate in the world says
Dr Vijay Kapadia.
The Fiji-born doctor, now practising
in Australia says having a record of
304 heart disease deaths per hundred
thousand and being ranked number one
at that is not a record to be proud of and
should ring alarm bells.
This is the statistic at least four
times that of Australia where they are
dealing with the population of at least
three million, he said. The rate has
prompted Dr Kapadia to see to it that
a Catheterization Lab is opened in the
country, the commissioning of which
was held by Prime Minister Voreqe
Bainimarama.
"Weve been trying all these years to set
up something to target heart disease in

the country, Dr Kapadia said. What

we needed was a national cardiac
centre where we treat everyone with
preventative services with medication
but were also able to offer more
aggressive interventional therapy.
"The message is now getting clearer and
more and more difficult, the news is not
good but can we make it better. Kapadia
said it was until recently that Fiji had no
standard cardiac facility and no single
trained cardiologist in the true sense of
the word in the current state.
Dr Kapadia is a member of the Sydney
Adventist Hospitals Operation Heart
team to Fiji and does screening of
patients with Rheumatic Heart Disease.
The lab was made possible through
a $200,000 assistance from the
Government of India.

FRCA Amends Tax Clearance

Rules For Parents

Parents with children studying abroad

will from September 1 no longer need
tax clearances from the Fiji Revenue
and Customs Authority should they
wish to send between $2000 and
$20,000 across.
FRCA chief executive Jitoko Tikolevu
said the decision by the authority is
to assist Fijians and businesses by
improving its systems and processes.
We have listened to our customers,
in particular businesses who regularly
remit funds overseas and have found it
cumbersome to come to our offices for
tax clearance whenever the amount is
over $2000, Tikolevu said.
However, we have capped the limit at
$20,000 and we trust our taxpayers to

be responsible in continuing to fulfill

their tax obligations."
Tikolevu said they are mindful of the
risk they have taken to do this, hence
have placed their trust on customers
to abide the guidelines accordingly.
This means that individuals and
business will not require Tax Clearance
certificate for remittances that are
valued at less than FJD $20,000.
Any transaction exceeding FJD$20,000
will require a Tax Clearance certificate
from FRCA.
FRCA further assures taxpayers it
will continue to review its operational
policies and practices to bring in more
efficiency and improvement in its
services.

Observers Welcome Tor, Readies

To Start

The first lot of group of observers to

assess Fiji's 2014 General Elections are
expected into the country soon.
Acting Australian High Commission
Glen Miles made the announcement
following the signing of the
Multinational Observer Group (MOG)
Terms of Reference at Suvavou House.
"The important thing about getting this
document today is that it enables us to
start moving forward," Miles said.
"It is a very positive and promising day
in getting this signed and its been a
lot of hard work but its an important
element in any election process is to
have an observers mission participate
and it gives everyone confidence to
participate."
Speaking on behalf of the Australian
Government, Miles said they were
pleased to have been invited to co-lead
along with co-leaders Indonesia, India
and Papua New Guinea.
The MOG co-leaders' immediate focus
would be to establish a secretariat
before the rest of the observers arrive.
No exact date was given for when the
observer group would start, but the
TOR signed today provided that they
would start once they have been give an
induction of the electoral laws by the Fijian
Government and received accreditation
from the Fijian Elections Office.
The MOG will be made up of both
long term observers who will arrive
in Fiji prior to the election and short
term observers, who will arrive prior
to polling and stay until polling and
counting have been finalised.
The final number of observers and
dates of arrival and departure would be
finalised by the Fijian Government and
relevant international partners.
The TOR also provides for freedom of
movement around the country for all
members of the MOG, guaranteed no
government authority interference, and
communicate freely with government,
political parties, coalition of parties and
other social and political organisations
in Fiji.
The FEO also provides that the FEO
could revoke the accreditation of any
member of the MOG if the organisation
or member failed to adhere to laws of
Fiji, failed to adhere to directions by the
FEO, obstructed election officials in the

conduct of their official duties, bias in the

observation of the electoral process and
failure to adhere to the TOR. The MOG
will conclude once it has submitted its
report to the Fijian Government and the
Fijian Elections Office.
The TOR provides that the report "shall
contain a determination on all matters
provided in the scope of the MOG...
and where appropriate the observation
report will also offer recommendations
for improving the integrity and
effectiveness of future electoral and
related processes."
The co-leaders will be the primary
contact between the MOG and the
Fijian Government.
MOG Scope:
- observe and evaluate functions and
operations including the procurement
process of the FEO with respect to the
election.
- observe and evaluate the EVR process
and establishment of Register of Voters
and voter list
- observe and evaluate the voter
education campaign including voter
information provided or authorised by
FEO
- observe and evaluate the processes
involved with alternative means of
voting
- observe and evaluate the nomination
and registration of candidates
and conduct of political parties as
prescribed in the Electoral Decree
- observe and evaluate election day
operations and events that facilitate
voting operations in compliances with
the procedures established in the decree
- observe and evaluate the vote counting
process, the determination of election
results and dissemination thereof
- observe and evaluate the resolution of
disputes throughout the electoral cycle,
including any mechanism established
to hear and educate the election related
disputes
- observe and evaluate the reconciliation
of all ballot papers after the 2014
election
- assess whether the voter processes
of the FEO facilitated and assisted the
Fijian voters to exercise their right to
freely vote and whether the outcome of
the 2014 Elections broadly represented
the will of the Fijian voters.

The Fiji United Freedom Party has

released a model which they believe
will bring people of all races in the
country together.
Party president Jagath Karunaratne
said they also have an open invitation
to people and political parties that
might want to utilise this model.
The model has different entities that
will serve different people that they
serve. The basic idea is to bring the
resource and the people together in
unity, Karunaratne said. He said they
have been talking to people in different
setups for the last couple of years.

This model didnt just come up, this

is the result of continuous discussion
with the people and the chiefs and all
that. They know what were talking
about, they know theyre going to get
something better out of this relation that
weve been having, Karunaratne said.
He said it was now a matter of putting
a face to the discussions where people
need to know that the party has been
set up for the model they have had
discussions with over the years.
Karunaratne said their primary focus
now would be to present the model to
the people and help them understand.

Officers Take Disaster

Management Course

Representatives from disaster and

management
agencies
undertook a two-day course on interservice incident management in Suva
last week.
The Australasian Inter-Service Incident
Management System or AIIMS
Course introduced participants to a
systematic way of managing incidents
when involving either single or multiagencies.
In opening the workshop, Ministry of
Rural and Maritime Development and
National Disaster Management deputy
secretary, Setareki Tale reminded
participants about the importance of
sharing knowledge, information and
cooperation in national development
and national disaster resilience.
Workshop coordinator, Mr Anthony
Blake said the course was to ensure that
all incident personnel were working
towards one set of objectives.
Eroni Duaibe, participant from the
Royal Military Forces commended
the course as it would allow agencies

dealing with incidents to understand

the different roles they play.
An
agencys
jurisdiction
of
responsibility needs to be known so
that other agencies involved in an
incident can know where to take over
from, Mr Duaibe said.
Mr Duaibe said that more collaboration
in terms of information sharing and
synchronisation of responsibilities
were needed between agencies.
Over 20 participants from various
incident
management
agencies
participated at the two-day workshop,
which included the National Fire
Authority, the Police, Ministry of
Defence, Fiji Military Forces and the
Fiji Navy to name a few.
The AIIMS course, an initiative of the
Secretariat of the Pacific Community
(SPC) was facilitated by Fire and
Rescue Services from Victoria and
Queensland, Australia in conjunction
with the Pacific Islands Emergency
Management Alliance and the National
Disaster Management Office.

$1.5M Lighthouse Project For

Safe Travel

Fiji's Ministry of Works and Public

Utilities plans to construct eight
lighthouses to the tune of $1.5million
along the Bligh waters from Tivoa
Island to Waya passage. Ministry's
media officer Peni Namotu says this
is to provide an effective, efficient and
operational array of Aid to Navigation
(AtoNs).
Four will be constructed on single piles,
two will be of tripod design and two will
be constructed on rock of 3 x 3 metre
square base. The area was earmarked
for the project because of its daily use.
The stretch of water is riddled with

reefs which are inadequately marked

for day and night navigation.
Despite the inadequacy of ATONs,
vessels of all sizes continue to use
the route as it is a major shipping
route for vessels proceeding to and
from the Yasawa group, Viwa and the
Mamanuca group. The volume of
shipping has increased exponentially
due to the continued development in
the Tourism Industry and governments
initiatives on rural development which
demands maritime infrastructures as
such to guide ships as they maneuver
these areas, Namotu said.

Chinese Zoo Unveils 'Miracle'

Panda Triplets

Friday Aug 15, 2014

19

Start Your Own Business!

6 - MONTHS
A Chinese zoo has unveiled newborn
panda triplets which are considered to
be the world's first known surviving
trio.
The births are being hailed as a
"miracle" given the animal's famously
low reproductive rate.
The mother panda, named Juxiao,
which means "chrysanthemum smile",
delivered the triplets at Guangzhou's
Chimelong Safari Park in the early
hours of July 29.
Her cubs had to be put into incubators
because she was too exhausted to take
care of them after labour and had to
regain her strength.
The zoo announced the triplets had
been brought back to their mother for
nursing and were being attended to by
a round-the-clock team of feeders.
"They were said to be the only panda
triplets that have ever survived," the
zoo said in a statement.
An official from Sichuan Wolong
National Natural Reserve, considered
the foremost authority on pandas, said
the trio were too young to be officially
recognised as "surviving" but that they
were the only known panda triplets

alive.
"We can only say they are surviving
once they reach six months. For now
they are indeed the only surviving
triplets," said an official from the centre
who only gave her name as Ms Zhao.
"The triplets can be described as a
new wonder of the world," the zoo
said, describing mortality rates among
newborn pandas as "extremely high".
Pictures taken earlier this month of the
triplets showed the pink-coloured cubs
inside an incubator with their eyes
closed and bodies sparsely covered
with white fur.
"The mother and babies were in good
condition, but the adorable newborns
were particularly inspiring," the zoo said.
The gender of the cubs was not
disclosed and they would be given
their names at a later date.
Pandas, whose natural habitat lies in
mountainous southwestern China, have
a notoriously low reproductive rate and
are under pressure from factors such as
habitat loss.
China has about 1,600 pandas living in
the wild. Their normal breeding season
is mid-April to May.

Stepfather Guilty Of Murder

A man has been found guilty of the "violent
and vicious" murder of his stepdaughter,
who was also his former lover.
Leanne Meecham, 26, was stabbed
at her house in Westcliff-on-Sea, in
Essex, in February. She later died in
hospital.
Her stepfather and former partner
Simon Meecham, 43, was found guilty
by a jury at Chelmsford Crown Court.
Judge Charles Gratwicke told him to
prepare himself "for a substantial term
of imprisonment".
He will be sentenced at a later date.
'Unprovoked attack'
During the trial, Meecham, from
Rosewood Lane in Shoeburyness, told the
jury he injured Miss Meecham by mistake,
not realising he was holding a knife.
But Essex Police described the stabbing
on 13 February as "a determined,
focused and wholly unprovoked
attack" on a "defenceless" victim.
Miss Meecham died in hospital in
London a week later.
A post-mortem examination found she
suffered brain damage, caused by a
lack of oxygen, after she was stabbed
in the windpipe.
The court heard Meecham, who was
previously married to Miss Meecham's
mother Jane, had a serious alcohol
problem.
Police had been called to disturbances
at the house on Park Street on numerous

occasions.
In January, he was arrested and pleaded
guilty to common assault, leading to
him and Miss Meecham splitting up.
'Jealousy and anger'
During the murder trial, he denied
being controlling and threatening to
kill his stepdaughter when she started
a new relationship.
The prosecution said he was "motivated
by jealousy and anger".
Det Chief Insp Mark Hall said
Meecham "stabbed himself a number
of times in an attempt to make it look
like he was the victim" after leaving
Miss Meecham's house.
"He later falsely claimed these injuries
had been caused by Leanne, and then
later claimed he had stabbed her
accidently.
"The jury in this case has seen through
those lies," he said.
Speaking after the trial, Miss
Meecham's family said: "The past six
months have been especially hard for
us as we struggle to come to terms with
how Leanne was taken from us.
"Despite the conviction of her killer,
his term of imprisonment will never be
sufficient punishment".
A domestic homicide review and an
internal police investigation into the
case, supervised by the Independent
Police Complaints Commission, are
now under way.

Five Police Investigated After Delhi Launches

Whatsapp Anti-Bribery Campaign
Five policemen in India are being
investigated for alleged corruption
after officials received complaints on a
newly-launched helpline number.
Since its launch on 6 August, the
helpline has received more than 3,700
WhatsApp messages and 622 calls.
Officials said they had received two
video and three audio messages
and were investigating the reported
incidents.
Correspondents say there have long
been allegations of corruption in the
Delhi police force - and the rest of
India.
Delhi police commissioner BS Bassi
last week launched a new helpline
number [9910641064], asking the
public to send audio or video messages
via the instant messaging service
WhatsApp "if any cop seeks a bribe or
harasses a person".
Advertisements were taken out in
popular Hindi and English newspapers
as well as on FM radio channels to make
people aware about the new helpline.
The "response from the public has been
good", deputy commissioner of police
Sindhu Pillai told the BBC.
Ms Pillai is part of the vigilance
department
which
investigates

policemen after complaints of

bribery, corruption, bad behaviour
with complainants and inaction on
complaints.
"Most of the messages we have received
so far are from people wanting to know
about this service, but we have also
received some complaints," she said.
"Once we get an audio or video clip,
we ask the complainant to come to our
office and give a written complaint. We
get the recording checked at the forensic
science laboratory to make sure its
genuine and once the authenticity is
established, action is taken against the
errant policeman."
Of the five video and audio files
received on the helpline, Ms Pillai said
her department had initiated action in
two cases, involving five policemen,
for demanding - and accepting - bribes.
In the first case, a complainant sent a
video recording of an assistant subinspector receiving a bribe of 400
rupees ($6.5; 3.9) while in the second
incident, an audio recording revealed
four policemen demanding and
accepting bribes from a shopkeeper
over a period of a year.
"We have registered cases against the
erring police officers under India's

Prevention of Corruption Act and

action has been initiated against them,"
Ms Pillai said.
The policemen have been suspended.
WhatsApp is hugely popular in India
because it is easy to use and carries no
advertisements.

The service is available on Apple,

Android and Blackberry platforms and
it's very cheap.
The messaging service is used by
about 500 million people globally and
estimates say nearly a tenth of its users
are in India.

Swiss Train Derailed In

Landslide

A train has derailed at the top of a

gulley after running into a landslide
near the Swiss ski resort of St Moritz.
Eleven people are reported to have been
injured and taken to nearby hospitals
by helicopter, but there appear to have
been no fatalities.
The accident left one carriage hanging
over the edge of the ravine, while
another plunged down before lodging
behind a tree.
The landslide happened after heavy
rain in eastern Switzerland overnight.
Five people were seriously injured and
another six sustained slight injuries,
said Graubuenden police spokeswoman
Anita Senti.
A passenger who was on the train told

the Swiss newspaper 20Minuten of

his experience when the train made an
emergency stop.
"We all rushed to the back of the carriage
to put all of our weight there so that it
wouldn't tip into the abyss," he said.
There were reportedly 200 people on
the train when the accident happened.
The accident occurred on a mountainous
train line near Tiefencastel, between
Chur and St Moritz in the region of
Graubuenden.
The Swiss rail system is widely seen
as among the safest in the world. But
Wednesday's accident comes only two
days after three people died when their
minibus was hit by a train in central
Switzerland.

I-Day Function - Over 7,000

Security Personnel At Red Fort
An additional 2,000 paramilitary
personnel besides over 5,000 policemen
will keep vigil during this year's
Independence Day celebration at the
Red Fort owing to the threat perception
to Prime Minister Narendra Modi who
will unfurl the Tricolour Friday.
"Ahead of the Independence Day, the
threat perception to the prime minister
and other leaders has increased. The
security has been beefed up," a police
officer, requesting anonymity, said.
Modi is under the constant protection
of about a 1,000 Special Protection
Group (SPG) commandos while the
Delhi Police personnel are responsible
for guarding the outer periphery.
At the Red Fort, over 200 closed circuit
television (CCTV) cameras have been
installed while about 500 have been
installed on all routes leading to the
venue.
In addition, paramilitary personnel will
keep a special watch and stand guard
at every road intersection to be used by

the dignitaries to reach the Red Fort.

"Some roads around the venue will
remain closed from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. for
the general public," said the officer.
About 15 sentry posts with armed
security personnel will ensure the
security of the fort, while some
policemen with binoculars will be
deployed at high rises.
"The residents living around the venue
have been asked to keep their windows
shut till the function is over," said the
officer.
A total of 40 mounted police will keep
a tab on any suspicious activity or
people on the ground.
All borders with neighbouring states
will be sealed for heavy vehicles and
only personal cars will be allowed to
enter from Thursday midnight, said the
officer.
Meanwhile, bomb detection and
quick response teams, dog squads and
officials of the Delhi Fire Service will
remain on high alert.

old man appeared at Manukau District
Court jointly charged with Mr Singh's
murder.
The accused have been remanded in
custody to reappear in the High Court.
Both have been granted name
suppression to allow them time to
inform families overseas in India.
Detectives investigating the homicide
believe they have now found "a weapon

of interest".
"Police thank those members of the
public who contacted the Operation
Bastille team about items they located
which may have been of interest," a
statement said.
Father-of-one Mr Singh, 35, was
stabbed to death as he sat in his car
beside wife Amandeep Kaur outside
the Manukau Event Centre in Norman
Spencer Drive, Papatoetoe, about
7.20pm.
They were on their way home from
work and had stopped to eat a takeaway
meal when the attack occurred.

A 14-year-old Texas boy who went

missing for nearly three days was
discovered living at a Walmart store
where he had carved out hiding places
in shelves stacked with products and
foraged for food in other aisles, police
and news reports said on Wednesday.
The boy slept in two makeshift shelters
hidden from public view at a store in
Corsicana, one in the baby gear aisle
behind boxes of strollers and the other
behind bulk paper towels and toilet
paper, according to CBS Dallas.
After he was discovered on July 30,
"the juvenile was transported to the
police department and later that night
to the care of licensed professionals for
follow-up care," police in Corsicana,
50 miles (80 km) southeast of Dallas,
said on Wednesday.
Child protective services said they
have been looking into the case.
Police said they were notified that
the boy had run away from his aunt's
home, where he was visiting while his
parents were out of town.

The boy's mother told police he has a

history of running away and hiding in
businesses and abandoned houses and
near creeks, police said.
Brian Nick, a spokesman for Wal-Mart
Stores Inc, said: "This is a sad situation
and we are still looking into the details of
what happened. As soon as our manager
learned that the child was hiding in our
store we contacted authorities for help.
We hope the child is safe."
Store employees discovered the boy,
who has not been identified, after a
trash trail led to one of his lairs, CBS
Dallas said, citing employees.
The company said he was discovered
by a store associate near a baby apparel
section.
The boy is thought to have worn diapers
instead of using the store restroom and
changed outfits to avoid being detected
by store employees, it said.
Still photographs of the boy's stockpile
released by the broadcaster showed
an opened Pop-Tart box and empty
chocolate-milk bottle.

Moroccan Grilled Lamb Chops

This is an easy, delicious recipe for

Moroccan Grilled Lamb Chops with
Moroccan spices, garlic and fresh herbs.
Select rib or loin lamb chops. Allow the
meat to marinate overnight for tender,
flavorful results.
Ingredients:
2 lbs. (about 1 kg) lamb chops
1/4 cup chopped fresh mint
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
2 or 3 cloves garlic, pressed
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon cumin
1 1/2 teaspoons paprika
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground hot pepper or hot

paprika (optional)
Preparation:
Wash the lamb chops and drain
thoroughly.
In a large mixing bowl combine the
herbs, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil and
spices. Add the lamb chops and mix
well to coat the meat evenly.
Cover the bowl and refrigerate the
lamb chops for at least six hours, or
overnight for best results.
Remove the lamb chops from the
fridge, and heat your grill. Lightly oil
the grill rack to prevent the meat from
sticking. Cook the lamb chops for 5 to
8 minutes on each side, depending on
the thickness of the cuts of meat. Be
careful of flames from fat drippings,
which can scorch the meat.
Serve the lamb chops warm.

Ingredients
200g cooked turkey or chicken, cut
into strips
4 tbsp hoisin sauce
2 flour tortillas
cucumber, deseeded and shredded
4 spring onions, trimmed and finely
shredded
finely chopped chillies
Method
Heat the grill to high. Mix the turkey

or chicken with half of the hoisin

sauce so that its coated, then spread
out onto an ovenproof dish and grill
until sizzling. Warm the tortillas
under the grill or according to pack
instructions.
Spread the tortillas with the rest of the
hoisin sauce, then use to wrap up the
turkey or chicken with the cucumber,
onions and chillies. Cut in half and
enjoy while still warm.

Buffa Cue Chicken Wings With

Sticky Honey Sauce

For the wings and marinade:

16 whole chicken wings (about 3-1/2
pounds)
1/2 cup Tabasco sauce or your favorite
hot sauce
1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 teaspoons coarse salt (kosher or sea)
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
For the mop sauce:
8 tablespoons (1 stick) salted butter
1/2 cup Tabasco sauce or your favorite
hot sauce
For serving:
Maytag Blue Cheese Sauce (see step 6)
4 ribs celery, rinsed and cut into thirds
lengthwise, then cut crosswise into
roughly 3-inch sticks
Step 1: Rinse the chicken wings under
cold running water and blot them dry
with paper towels. Cut the tips off the
wings and discard them (or leave the
tips on if you dont mind munching a
morsel thats mostly skin and bones).
Cut each wing into 2 pieces through
the joint.
Step 2: Make the marinade: Whisk
together the hot sauce, lemon juice, oil,
Worcestershire sauce, garlic, salt, and
pepper in a large nonreactive mixing
bowl. Stir in the wing pieces and let
marinate in the refrigerator, covered,

for 4 to 6 hours or as long as overnight,

turning the wings several times so that
they marinate evenly.
Step 3: Make the mop sauce: Just before
setting up the grill, melt the butter in a
small saucepan over medium heat and
stir in the hot sauce.
Step 4: Set up the grill for indirect
grilling and preheat to medium. If using
a gas grill, place all of the wood chips or
chunks in the smoker box or in a smoker
pouch and run the grill on high until
you see smoke, then reduce the heat to
medium. If using a charcoal grill, place
a large drip pan in the center, preheat
the grill to medium, then toss all of the
wood chips or chunks on the coals.
Step 5: When ready to cook, drain the
marinade off the wings and discard the
marinade. Brush and oil the grill grate.
Place the wings in the center of the hot
grate, over the drip pan and away from
the heat, and cover the grill. Cook the
wings until the skin is crisp and golden
brown and the meat is cooked through,
30 to 40 minutes. During the last 10
minutes, start basting the wings with
some of the mop sauce.
Step 6: Transfer the grilled wings to a
shallow bowl or platter and pour the
remaining mop sauce over them. Serve
with Maytag Blue Cheese Sauce and
celery for dipping and of course plenty
of paper napkins and cold beer.

Family Home Of Surrey Religious

Leader Charged In Death Of His
Wife Targeted By Thieves
The family of a Surrey religious
leader accused of murder have now
themselves become victims of crime.
Former Sikh temple temple president
Baldev Singh Kalsi was charged
last month with the death of his wife
Narinder Kaur Kalsi.
Narinder was found in her south Surrey
home in severe medical distress on July
13. She was airlifted to hospital but
eventually was taken off life support.
While her husband was in jail awaiting
trial, his family home was targeted by
thieves multiple times.
Baldev was also assaulted while in
custody at Surrey Pretrial Centre.
The family says thieves have broken
into the house and out buildings six
times since the event hit the news.
The first break-in happened while the
family was in hospital and their mom
was still on life support.
After the fifth break-in the family hid a
camera and captured the images below
this past Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Police
say its likely the alleged thieves knew
the house would be empty.
Weve had a couple of incidents
reported at that residence since the
homicide investigation was initiated,
one in mid-July and one in early

August, said Cpl. Bert Paquet with the

Surrey RCMP. Were talking about
property crimes, were talking about
an invasion of privacy, breaking into
somebodys vehicles, stealing items. In
one of the cases a vehicle was stolen as
well. So these files are actively being
investigated.
It is alleged that jewellery, TVs,
computers, a tractor and even a brand
new van belonging to Narinder have
been taken. The sons say their dad
is in jail, their mom is dead and now
thieves are re-victimizing them and
they cant properly grieve until they
are caught. They are asking anyone
who can identify the men to contact
Surrey RCMP.

A 63-year-old woman is extremely
shaken up after randomly getting
stabbed in the leg near Metrotown on
Friday.
Mounties wont say what exactly the
substance in the syringe is because of
privacy issues. There is a possibility
that the needle was dirty though.
Inspector Bob Page says just before
10:30 a.m. the woman was walking
eastbound on the south side of Kingsway
and was stopped at a light at McKay
Avenue when a man, standing next to
her, stabbed her in the leg with a needle.
Were hoping that nothing comes
out of this as far as herself goes. It is
traumatic and we want, for her sake as
well, to locate this individual.
The man walked away and she went to
report it and was treated in the hospital.

is random and the suspect is still out
there.
The suspects description stands out
and we remain hopeful that someone
will identify him. Thats why we are
urging the public to share the suspects
description with your families and
friends.
The suspect is described as a darkskinned man with dyed, short blond
hair. Hes about 35-years-old and 57
tall. He was wearing a light blue tank
top, dark jeans and was carrying three
shopping bags.
If you know anything about this case

are asked to call Burnaby RCMP at

Former CFIA Researcher Pleads

Guilty In Bacteria-Smuggling Case

A former lead researcher at the

Canadian Food Inspection Agency
has pleaded guilty to attempting to
smuggle dangerous bacteria to China.
Klaus Nielsen, who faced 11 charges
accusing him of trying to take
Brucella bacteria to China with
the help of another former CFIA
employee, was arrested two years ago
as he headed to the Ottawa airport for
a trip to China.
Undercover police who had Nielsen
under surveillance discovered several
Brucella vials in his baggage.
Brucella causes an infectious disease
called brucellosis. People get the
disease when they're in contact with
infected animals or animal products

contaminated with the bacteria.

Animals that are most commonly
infected include sheep, cattle, goats,
pigs, and dogs. Canada eradicated
brucellosis in the 1980s, though cases
regularly crop up in developing nations.
Nielsen, 68, is free on bail until
sentencing.
CFIA had first reported its concerns
about Nielsen in March 2011, RCMP
said at the time.
The Mounties say their investigation
focused on Nielsen and Wei Ling
Yu's alleged "unlawful efforts to
commercialize intellectual property
belonging to the CFIA and a private
commercial partner."
Yu is believed to be at large in China.

Canada-U.S. Price Gap Measures Coming In The Fall

Legislation to regulate price differences, 'unjustified' discrimination in consumer goods

The federal government is poised to

introduce legislation in the fall to try
to narrow the consumer price gap
between Canada and the U.S.
The proposal was a key part of the
consumer-first agenda set out in the
February budget, and was made in the
face of warnings from industry groups
that the idea was unworkable at best,
and unenforceable at worst.
"It's a budget commitment," Jake
Enright, press secretary to Industry
Minister James Moore, told the news.
"We intend to move forward on it in
due course."
Enright refused to comment further, but
sources expect the proposed legislation
to be part of a second large budget
implementation bill this fall.
That means it will be only one of a
wide range of measures the opposition
parties and public will have to wade
through, making it more difficult to
analyze in detail, let alone find reasons
to oppose.
After all, consumers are us. And anyone
who's spent any time in the U.S. lately
knows that stuff is cheaper there, even
the stuff that is produced right here in
Canada.
Still, the Conservatives have done their
best to downplay the price promise in
recent months, as Moore focused most
of his time on other hard-to-deliver
consumer initiatives, such as promoting
competition in the cellphone industry
and convincing the provinces to scrap
internal trade barriers.
But the plan does raise awkward
questions of why this government,
staunch believers in letting the market
decide, is prepared to regulate how
much more Canadian should pay than

their American cousins for everything

from food to cars to hockey equipment.
Critics warn the plans would force
the Competition Bureau to hire more
investigators, in order to probe every
inch of the supply chain and determine
where prices are higher than in the
U.S. and whether those higher costs
are justified.
Those concerns were raised last spring
by industry groups in consultations
with both Moore's department and the
Prime Minister's Office.
Many of the people at those meetings
left with the feeling that the government
understood they had a problem and
would re-think the plan to come up
with a better option to close the price
gap between the two countries, one
they could sell not just to consumers
but to business, too.
What is unjustified discrimination?
When the Conservative government
made this commitment, the plan
was to empower the competition
commissioner to investigate complaints
of "unjustified" cross-border price
discrimination, and to impose fines
in cases where consumers are being
charged more for identical goods
selling for less south of the border,
unless that price difference reflects
legitimate higher costs.
Just what qualifies as a legitimately
higher cost isn't clear. Neither is how
much higher the cost has to be to
warrant intervention by a government
regulator in the marketplace, where
price is generally determined by how
much consumers are willing to pay.
"What I'm worried about is the
government setting up a system
of investigation and fines that will

everything UNIFORMS

Tel: 604.514.9903 www.everythinguniforms.ca

only cost consumers more at the

end of the day," says Jayson Myers,
CEO of Canadian Manufacturers
and Exporters, the country's largest
industry association.
Myers's organization is not the only
one wondering how this whole thing
will work.
Retail groups and competition lawyers
are equally perplexed.
"How do you decide what's unjustified
versus a legitimate higher cost," asked
Adam Fanaki, a partner with the law
firm Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg
in Toronto.
Fanaki, who's a former senior executive
with the Competition Bureau, said he
worries a Canadian company trying to
expand in the U.S. market could run
afoul of the proposed law if it decided
to charge lower prices in the States as a
way of promoting its product.
"That would potentially disadvantage
Canadian businesses."
Retail politics
The 2014 budget does recognize that

there are higher operating costs in

Canada because of some import tariffs
on food, less competition in the retail
sector and the relatively small size of
the Canadian versus American markets.
But it doesn't set out how much more
those factors should add to the cost in
Canada.
There are other issues, too. How much
variation in price is the government
prepared to accept? How will the
difference in the value of the Canadian
and U.S. dollars be taken into account?
How will the Competition Bureau
determine who is responsible the
manufacturer, the distributor, the
retailer when instances of unfair
price gaps are found?
The details, as they say, are the devil.
But for the Conservatives, a promise is a
promise, whether it's to introduce income
splitting for families with children when
the budget is balanced next year, or to
close the Canada/U.S. price gap.
Oh, and it's also retail politics at its
best.

Canada Post To Ask For Doctor's

Note To Keep Home Mail Delivery

Canada Post says customers who want

to continue receiving home delivery
because they expect to be unable to
access their mail from community
mailboxes will require a doctors note.
But the agency expects few customers
will need such notes, because other
solutions can be found to accommodate
their needs.
Canada Post announced last December
it would be phasing out home delivery
over the next five years to the one-third
of Canadian households that still get
their mail delivered to their home.
The agency says it understands that
some people, such as seniors and those
with disabilities, face challenges with
community mailboxes. That's why, it
says, it's mailing out questionnaires
to people who have informed them
they require assistance when their
neighbourhood is transitioned to the
new boxes.
Canada Post spokesperson Jon
Hamilton says customized solutions
are found in most cases.
"We talked to experts in many fields of
mobility and disability issues and what
they've told us loud and clear is, 'You
need to be able to tailor the solutions
to every individual circumstance'," he
told the media.
Hamilton says some customers have no
problem getting to a community box,
but have trouble getting the mail out.
"So we might be able to give an extra
key to a caregiver. Or we might offer
a key aid if it's a dexterity issue or
arthritis. Or we can put a tray in the box
to make it easier to pull out the mail,

rather than having to reach in," he said.

Those in wheelchairs can be assigned
boxes on lower rows, while those who
have trouble bending can be assigned
boxes higher up.
For those who will have trouble getting
to the community mailbox, he says
mail can be redirected to a post office

"Or we may visit the idea of delivering
the mail five days a week to the
community box and then once a week,
clearing it out and delivering it to the
door," Hamilton said.
For that solution, customers would need
to send in a note from their health care
provider explaining their circumstances.
Hamilton says the doctor's note
requirement is not unusual.
"We put that in place after looking
at other accommodation programs
among many levels of government
Asking for a doctor's note is pretty
commonplace when you look at
other assistance or accommodation
programs," he said.
Hamilton says Canada Post has found
solutions for people with difficulty
accessing community mailboxes for the
last 30 years. He says the percentage
of customers who require them is
relatively small, and the associated
costs -- which Canada Post bears -- are
also small.
"Yes, there are costs associated with
it. But we're in the business of making
sure people can access their mail and
that's part of our commitment," he said.

Skywest Pilot Joshua Petty White

Pleads Guilty To Smuggling
Loaded Gun In Carry-On
Airline pilot from the U.S. has been
fined $4,000 after being arrested in
Calgary in April
A SkyWest pilot has pleaded guilty to
a smuggling charge under the Customs
Act after a loaded gun was found in his
carry-on at the Calgary airport in April.
Joshua Petty White did not declare the
gun when he arrived in Canada from
the United States in March.
The gun was detected at airport security
as he was trying to return to the U.S.
the next day as part of a flight crew.
The U.S. Transportation Security
Administration said White used his
"known crew member" status to bypass
security at Salt Lake International Airport.

White was fined $4,000. He has been

put on administrative leave while
investigations are carried out.
His lawyer, Willie de Wit, says seven
other charges were dropped in a
Calgary courtroom Tuesday.
He says White admitted to being
reckless in bringing the gun across
the border and forgetting to check his
luggage.
The weapon was a Smith & Wesson
Bodyguard .380-calibre handgun.
White is not part of the Federal Flight
Deck Officer (FFDO) program, whose
members are permitted to carry
firearms on board planes, according to
a senior U.S. official.

The B.C. Securities Commission

has convicted Victoria-area financial
adviser David Michael Michaels of
perpetrating a massive fraud that cost
hundreds of investors a total of $65
million.
With a weekly CFAX radio show to
trumpet his claims, Michaels drew
elderly investors like lambs to the
slaughter.
"We are generating over $67,000 in
monthly income for our clients," he
boasted on his show. "For me and my
clients, give me the most rate of return
for the least amount of risk."
But B.C. Securities Commission head
Teresa Mitchell-Banks said Michaels's
"entire business was a fraud."
The commission found that between
2007 and 2010 the Cowichan Bay,
B.C., resident acted as an investment
adviser without being registered as
one.
The securities commission said
Michaels used a weekly radio
infomercial on CFAX in Victoria to
promote his business, telling potential
investors he gave up his registration as
a stockbroker because he had lost faith
in the market and resigned when he
foresaw the impending market crash.
According to the securities commission
this was a fraudulent claim, because the
former mutual fund salesman actually
lost his licence in 2006 when he was
under investigation by the Investment
Dealers Association of Canada for "a
number of off-book transactions with
clients."
It found Michaels guilty of improperly
advising 484 clients to buy $65 million
worth of market-exempt securities
without being registered.
Michaels earned $5.8M in commissions
It also found Michaels pocketed $5.8
million in commissions for himself
by talking seniors into buying the
securities by taking out loans on their
homes. The average age of his victims

was 72.
"They had a relationship of trust with
him when he was registered and he
used that relationship of trust to keep
selling these high-risk exempt market
securities."
In addition, the BCSC said that
"virtually all of the roughly $65 million
invested by Michaels's clients is now
worthless, leaving many of them
financially destitute while their home
equity loans remain."
Helen Dubas was one of the hundreds
of investors who trusted Michaels and
took out a line of credit against her
house to invest with him.
"David advised that it would be a really
good deal. I took a line of credit against
my house for that $100,000 and
that's $100,000 that I'm not going to be
able to pay off in my lifetime."
"He gave me brochures that said
guaranteed. That even if the thing went
down I'd be guaranteed my money
back, which of course wasn't true at
all," she said.
The Vancouver Island senior said she
and her husband had a long relationship
with Michaels.
"My husband had real faith in David,
because he really sold us on that we
were getting a good deal with him,
right. He would be so disappointed
with he's passed away, but he would
have been so disappointed in David,"
said Dubas.
Other investors told CBC News
that Michaels was personable and
knowledgeable and promised them
their money was being put into lowrisk funds including an oil company
and a private seniors' care centre.
The securities commission's MitchellBanks said penalties could include a
lifetime market ban and millions in
fines,
No criminal charges have been laid
against Michaels in relation to the
investigation.

Do You Spend Too Much Time

With Your Kids?

Parents relish time with their kids.

But you can overdo it. And that can be
unhealthy for you and your children.
So how do you find the right balance?
There isn't a set number of hours that
qualifies as too much time together.
Take a look at your routine. Are you
spending close to every waking hour
with your kids? Or every moment
youre not at work? Do they depend
on you for everything, including their
entertainment?
Eventually, youre
going to burn out.
Burnout is feeling overwhelmed and
unfulfilled at the same time. Look at
the big picture and make changes.
Marilena, remembers when her two
oldest children were small, and she
worked nonstop to create pictureperfect, memory-inspiring activities.
But she says it made them too
dependent, and she felt that she was
losing her identity. After her third child
was born, Marilena realized that her
kids could spend time with her without
being entertained.
I need to let creativity, passion, and
enthusiasm arise from them to create
a more balanced life and self-confident
children, she says.
You need to feel happy about your
parenting, that parenting is something
you want to do and that you are doing
a good job.
If you feel burnout creeping in, experts
suggest that you:
Change the Structure of Your
Togetherness
Have kids do some activities on
their own; theyll become more

independent, even if you do alone

activities together. Try reading in the
same room or making dinner while
your child colors at the kitchen table.
It's healthy to be able to spend time
alone. Children develop a sense of
security from being together and alone
at the same time.
Set Boundaries
Have your kids go to bed at a reasonable
hour; you'll all get a chance to recharge.
If your 6-year-old is staying up until
10:30pm, of course you have no time
for yourself. There's no down time.
Agree to One Game
Parents who've spent hours playing
may have trouble backing off, but it's
important to teach children that you
have other responsibilities.
Be clear with your kids and yourself
about what reasonable expectations
look like. When my son says, 'Play
with me,' I say, 'I have to wash the
dishes, check something online, and
play with you. Would you like me to
play first, last, or in the middle?'
Focus on Family Moments
Deepen your connection by planning
times to focus fully on your family.
Schedule family dinners, game nights,
trips to the park, and other simple
activities.
I'm a big believer of mealtimes
together with no screen time, Laursen
says. You would be surprised how
many parents who make that rule then
turn around and break it by picking up
their own phone, answering emails, or
turning on the TV. The rule has to be
for everyone.

Running For 5 Mins Daily May

Add Years To Your Life

A new study has revealed that daily

running helps in reducing risks of
cardiovascular diseases that might lead
to death, regardless of duration and
speed.
It was found that running for only a few
minutes a day or at slow speeds might
significantly reduce a person's risk
of death from cardiovascular disease
compared to someone who does not
run.
Exercise has been well-established as
a way to prevent heart disease and as
a component of an overall healthy life,
but it was unclear whether there were
health benefits below the level of 75
minutes per week of vigorous-intensity
activity, such as running, recommended
by the World Health Organization.
The study showed that people who
ran less than 51 minutes fewer than 6
miles, slower than 6 miles per hour, or
only one to two times per week had a
lower risk of dying compared to those
who did not run.
Duck-chul Lee, an assistant professor in
the Iowa State University Kinesiology
Department in Ames, Iowa, said they
found that runners who ran less than an

hour per week have the same mortality

benefits compared to runners who ran
more than three hours per week, thus, it
was possible that the "more" might not
be the "better" in relation to running
and longevity.
He further suggested that since time
has been one of the strongest barriers
to participate in physical activity, the
study might motivate more people to
start running and continue to run as
an attainable health goal for mortality
benefits and running might be a better
exercise option than more moderate
intensity exercises for healthy but
sedentary people since it produces
similar, mortality benefits in 5 to 10
minutes compared to the 15 to 20
minutes per day of moderate intensity
activity that many find too time
consuming.
Researchers also looked at running
behavior patterns and found that those
who persistently ran over a period
of six years on average had the most
significant benefits, with a 29 percent
lower risk of death for any reason and
50 percent lower risk of death from
heart disease or stroke.

New Treatment For Gum Disease

In Diabetics

Going to the dentist may not be fun

but for those with periodontal disease
related to type-two diabetes, a new
research may bring back their smile.
Scientists have found that B cells
- one of the most important blood
cells involved in the human immune
response - are shown to promote
inflammation and bone loss in typetwo diabetes-associated periodontal
disease.
The treatments that manipulate the
responses of B cells may treat or
prevent the symptoms of type-two
diabetes and periodontitis or pyorrhea
simultaneously.
"Our study paves the way for the
development of novel therapeutics
which aim to simultaneously treat
both type-two diabetes and its
complications," said Min Zhu,
a researcher from department of
microbiology at Boston University's
school of medicine.

To make this discovery, scientists used

a mouse model of periodontal disease
and applied it to two groups.
The first group had a genetic alteration
that knocked out all B cells.
The second group had normal B cell
levels.
When fed a low-fat diet, without
development of obesity and type-two
diabetes, both groups demonstrated
a similar extent of oral bone loss and
inflammation.
However, when they were fed a high-fat
diet, oral bone loss and inflammation
occurred in the normal group with B
cells but did not develop in the group
that had a genetic alteration that
knocked out all B cells.
This suggests that the B cellresponse might be a viable target for
pharmacological intervention in both
type-two diabetes and periodontal
disease, as well as potentially in other
type-two diabetes complications.

A Garlic A Day For Good Health

Add a couple of cloves of garlic to your diet to boost your immunity

Garlic with its antiviral and

antibacterial properties helps boost
your immunity and keeps you looking
fresh and healthy. While in some cases
garlic supplements are available and
prescribed as a preventive measure for
common cold, it's actually very easy
to incorporate a few cloves of garlic
in our daily meals. Here's how you can
consume garlic without having to deal
with that awful breadth.
Add it to your soup: Soup itself is a very
good decongestant and helps warm up
the body. Make your own vegetable or
chicken broth soup at home and add
garlic to it to enhance the flavour as
well as get its antibiotic effect. Here's
what you can do:
Bring two cups of water to a simmer
over medium-high heat in a small
saucepan. Add garlic (grated and made
into a paste, for better flavouring),
some thyme or oregano seasoning, one
tablespoon of olive oil and salt to taste
to the water. Cover and simmer for 15
minutes until the broth is fragrant. Add
green vegetables (fresh peas, diced
carrots, beans, spring onions, chopped
capsicum, or other vegetables of
your choice) to the broth and simmer
uncovered for another five to eight
minutes until the vegetables are tender.
Taste and adjust salt. Beat one egg in
a bowl, and add a little freshly ground
pepper to it. Remove a small ladleful
of the soup, and whisk it into the egg

to temper it. Turn the heat off under the

soup, and stir in the egg mixture. The
egg should cloud the soup but shouldn't
scramble. Add some extra pepper on
the top, pour out in a bowl and enjoy.
Make your own garlic drink: The
smell of garlic makes it difficult to be
consumed raw, but when you use other
ingredients with an equally powerful
taste, it's easier. Here's a drink you can
try:
Take a large saucepan and add three
cups of water. Grate five cloves of
garlic and add it to the water. Cover the
lid and bring it to boil so that the garlic
fumes don't escape. Turn off the heat
after its boiled, add 10ml honey and the
juice of one lemon to the garlic-water
and stir well. Strain it into cups and sip
it, while inhaling the garlic fumes.
Try garlic vinegar: Desperate times
need desperate measure, and if you are
dealing with a stubborn cold, you must
try this garlic-vinegar recipe which is
sure to benefit you instantly.
In a medium sized bowl, add vinegar
(at least half the bowl). Mince one
large bulb of garlic (at least 10-15
cloves) and add it to the vinegar. Cover
it and let it sit for about an hour. The
vinegar absorbs all the raw qualities
of the garlic, making it a really strong
solution. Strain it and drink the solution
when you need immediate effects.
Otherwise, use it as a salad dressing or
in other recipes that use vinegar.

Radiation therapy
Radiation therapy may be offered for
stage II prostate cancer. The types of
radiation therapy are:
-external beam radiation therapy
-may be offered to men younger than
75 years of age who are in good health
-given after surgery (adjuvant
radiation) if the tumour spread is close
to the edge of the area from where the
----prostate gland was removed
-given if elevated PSA levels indicate
the presence of residual cancer or a
recurrence of the prostate cancer after
radical prostatectomy
-may be delayed 46 weeks if the
prostate cancer was found during a
transurethral resection of the prostate
(TURP), to reduce the risk of scarring
in the urethra (urethral stricture)
brachytherapy
-may be offered to men who meet the
criteria of the brachytherapy program:
-early stage prostate cancer still within
the prostate gland (T1c T2a)
-no larger than 60 cubic centimetres in
volume
-a Gleason score less than 7
-a PSA level of 10 or less
-a life expectancy of at least 10 years
-able to undergo general or spinal
anesthesia
-have not had a transurethral resection
of the prostate (TURP)
Active surveillance
Active surveillance (watchful waiting)
may be offered for stage II prostate
cancer in certain situations. It may be
offered to men with favourable (low)
risk prostate cancer or to older men
(over the age of 70) and men who have
other health problems.
Hormonal therapy
Hormonal therapy may be offered for
stage II prostate cancer to men who
have intermediate-risk or high-risk
prostate cancer that cannot be treated
with radiation therapy or surgery.
Hormonal therapy drugs may be given
before, during and after radiation
therapy, for a period of 6 months to 3
years.
The types of hormonal therapy are:
luteinizing
hormonereleasing
hormone (LHRH) agonists
leuprolide (Lupron, Lupron Depot,
Eligard)
goserelin (Zoladex)
buserelin (Suprefact)
LHRH antagonist

Treatment of stage III prostate cancer
The following are treatment options
for stage III prostate cancer. The types
of treatments given are based on the
unique needs of the person with cancer.
Radiation therapy
Radiation therapy has traditionally
been considered the first choice of
treatment for stage III prostate cancer.
It is given together with hormonal
therapy for stage III cancer. The type of
radiation therapy used is external beam
radiation therapy. Brachytherapy is not
an option for stage III cancer.
External beam radiation therapy
can also be given after a radical
prostatectomy (adjuvant radiation) to
reduce the risk of the cancer returning
in the area of the prostate. This is done
more frequently for stage III prostate
cancer.
Hormonal therapy
Hormonal therapy may be offered for
stage III prostate cancer:
in combination with radiation therapy
Hormonal therapy drugs may be given
for a period of time before, during and
after radiation therapy, for a period of
1 to 3 years.
alone as a primary treatment for men
who cannot have radiation therapy or
surgery
The types of hormonal therapy are:
-luteinizing
hormone-releasing
hormone (LHRH) agonists
-leuprolide (Lupron, Lupron Depot,
Eligard)
goserelin (Zoladex)
-buserelin (Suprefact)
-LHRH antagonist
-degarelix (Firmagon)
-anti-androgens
-flutamide (Euflex)
-bicalutamide (Casodex)
-nilutamide (Anandron)
-surgical removal of the testicles
(orchiectomy)
Surgery
Surgery may be offered for stage III
prostate cancer. The types of surgery
are:
-transurethral resection of the prostate
(TURP)
-to relieve the symptoms of prostate
cancer, but not to treat the tumour
-sometimes done before starting
radiation therapy or hormonal therapy
-radical prostatectomy
In the past, surgery was not offered
to men with stage III prostate cancer
because it was considered difficult
to remove the entire cancer. This has
changed, and there is evidence that
surgery is at least as good as radiation
therapy.
Surgery may be better than the

combination of radiation therapy and

hormonal therapy in some men because
it can be combined with post-operative
radiation.
The combination of surgery and
radiation therapy may avoid the need
for hormonal therapy and its associated
side effects.
Clinical trials
Men with prostate cancer may be
offered the opportunity to participate
in clinical trials. For more information,
go to clinical trials.
Treatment of stage IV prostate cancer
The following are treatment options
for stage IV prostate cancer. The types
of treatments given are based on the
unique needs of the person with cancer.
Hormonal therapy
Hormonal therapy is the primary
treatment for stage IV prostate cancer.
Up to 85% of men with advanced
prostate cancer will respond to
hormonal therapy.
The types of hormonal therapy are:
-luteinizing
hormone-releasing
hormone (LHRH) agonists
-leuprolide (Lupron, Lupron Depot,
Eligard)
-goserelin (Zoladex)
-buserelin (Suprefact)
-triptorelin (Trelstar)
-LHRH antagonist
-degarelix (Firmagon)
-anti-androgens
-flutamide (Euflex)
-bicalutamide (Casodex)
-nilutamide (Anandron)
-abiraterone acetate (Zytiga)
-enzalutamide (Xtandi)
-surgical removal of the testicles
(orchiectomy)
Radiation therapy
Radiation therapy may be offered for
stage IV prostate cancer:
to relieve the urinary symptoms caused
by the prostate tumour
to relieve pain in areas where the
prostate cancer has spread to the bone
(bone metastases)
External beam radiation therapy
is not given for 46 weeks after a
transurethral resection of the prostate
(TURP), to reduce the risk of scarring
in the urethra (urethral stricture).
Surgery
TURP may be offered for stage IV
prostate cancer. This surgery relieves
the urinary symptoms caused by the
prostate tumour.
Biological therapy
Biological therapy may be offered for
stage IV prostate cancer. The type of
biological therapy that may be given
to men with stage IV prostate cancer is
denosumab (Xgeva).
Denosumab may be used:
to help prevent bone fractures in men
with cancer that has spread to the bones

to help prevent spread of cancer to the

bones in men who have rising PSA
levels but no signs that cancer has
spread to the bones
Bisphosphonates
Bisphosphonates can be used for
prostate cancer that has spread to the
bone to relieve bone pain or prevent
fractures in men with advanced
castrate-resistant prostate cancer. The
bisphosphonate used is zoledronic acid
(Zometa).
Clinical trials
Men with prostate cancer may be
offered the opportunity to participate
in clinical trials. For more information,
go to clinical trials.
Treatment of recurrent prostate cancer
The following are treatment options
for recurrent prostate cancer. The types
of treatments given are based on the
unique needs of the person with cancer.
Hormonal therapy
Hormonal therapy is the primary
treatment for recurrent prostate cancer.
Up to 85% of men with recurrent
prostate cancer will respond to
hormonal therapy. It may be offered
to men who previously had surgery or
radiation therapy.
The types of hormonal therapy are:
-luteinizing
hormone-releasing
hormone (LHRH) agonists
-leuprolide (Lupron, Lupron Depot,
Eligard)
-goserelin (Zoladex)
-buserelin (Suprefact)
-LHRH antagonist
-degarelix (Firmagon)
-anti-androgens
-flutamide (Euflex)
-bicalutamide (Casodex)
-nilutamide (Anandron)
-abiraterone acetate (Zytiga)
-enzalutamide (Xtandi)
-surgical removal of the testicles
(orchiectomy)
Radiation therapy
Radiation therapy may be offered for
recurrent prostate cancer. The types
of radiation is external beam radiation
therapy:
Men who previously had surgery but
no radiation can receive radiation
therapy in the area of the prostate. This
can cure the cancer in some men.
Men who had radiation therapy as their
first treatment will not be able to have
radiation to the area of the prostate. The
normal tissues (bladder, rectum) will
not be able to tolerate more radiation.
It may be offered to treat bone
metastases in men who have had
previous surgery or radiation therapy
to the prostate.

Abhishek Kapoors Fitoor Goes Worldwide In Search Of Katrina Kaif

Lookalike
The Aditya Roy Kapur and Rekha
starrer film is in need of someone
special.
Fitoor has been in the talks for a long
time now. Since Abhishek Kapoors
Kai Po Che hit the screens, grapevine
has been abuzz with reports of his next
directorial, Fitoor. First with Sushant
Singh Rajput saying no to the role
because of date issues and then with
finding the leading lady, the film has
been getting delayed. When finally the
cast was locked in Aditya Roy Kapur,
Katrina Kaif and Rekha, the makers
have found themselves in another dire
need.
The story has a very big role for a
younger version of Aditya and Katrina.
So the casting directors are in the hunt
for someone who could look like the
two but should be just 11-13 years of
age. Now for Aditya, our khabroos
inform that the makers have found
someone, but for Katrina, they are
finding it utmost difficult. They are
looking out for someone who would

Kapil Hogs The Prime-Time Slot

Sources say that comedian Kapil

Sharma will be seen in back-to-back
shows on rival channels this weekend
Comedy king Kapil Sharma, who has
been in news for the past few months,
is back to grabbing headlines. This
time around, sources say that Kapil
will be seen in back-to-back shows on
rival channels this Independence Day.
Says a source, `Kapil has gained a lot of
popularity thanks to his show, Comedy
Nights with Kapil. On Independence
Day, not only will he be seen in his
own show, but the actor will also be
seen in the opening episode of Kaun
Banega Crorepati (KBC) along with its

superstar host, Amitabh Bachchan.`

The source adds that channels have
planned their programming keeping in
mind the fact that it's a long weekend.
`TV channels are only too aware of
Kapil's popularity and they want to
cash in on it. KBC's opening episode
will be shown on Sony at 7pm and post
that, Kapil will be seen on Colors in his
show, Comedy Nights with Kapil.
This apart, the weekend programming
of Colors anyway features repeat
telecasts of Kapil's shows; so it's
clearly a win-win situation for Kapil as
he'll be dominating the primetime slot,
says the source.

have Scandinavian features and would

also convincingly play a young Katrina.
So now the makers have decided to go
global in order to search for the right
cast and Kaifs photograph has been
sent worldwide for the search of a
similar lookalike.
While speaking to a leading daily casting
director Mukesh Chhabra says that its
too early to say anything. He says, Who
told you that I have already found a boy
to play a young Aditya Roy Kapur? We
are still looking. In fact, we have just
started casting for the film, so it will
take us sometime. But yes, for a younger
version of Katrina, we are conducting
auditions worldwide, he says.
Fitoor is a passionate love saga that
will be shot across many locations in
North India including Kashmir and
Delhi and an international destination.
The movie depicts the relationship
between three characters: a young
Kashmiri boy, Noor played by Aditya,
his muse, Firdaus played by Katrina,
and the Begum essayed by Rekha.

Hema Excited About Working

Again With Ramesh Sippy

Actress Hema Malini and director

Ramesh Sippy together gave hits
like "Andaz", "Seeta Aur Geeta" and
"Sholay". Now the two are teaming
up again after over four decades for
a romantic comedy and Bollwyood's
Dream Girl says this could be "another
important film in my career".
Titled "Shimla Mirchi", the film will
reportedly tell the story of a single
mother, played by Hema Malini, and
her daughter (Rakul Preet Singh), who
fall in love with the same man.
"In the midst of all that is happening
in parliament and my constituency
(Mathura), this film offer came to
me. Normally, I wouldn't have said
yes, given my grueling schedule in
parliament and my obligations in my
constituency. But this film is not the
usual run-of-the-mill stuff," said Hema.
She fell in love with the script.
"It's light-hearted comedy with a very
unusual role for me. I am sure it will
turn out to be something very special.
Also, the offer came from Rameshji
who is returning to direction after
many years. I couldn't say no to him.
"Some of my most important films, be
it 'Andaz', 'Seeta Aur Geeta' or 'Sholay'
have been with Rameshji. I get a feeling
this new film with Rameshji would be
another important film in my career."
Their last film together was 1972 hit comedy
"Sita Aur Geeta", about twin sisters.
How does Hema intend to find the time

to shoot for "Shimla Mirchi"?

"Just like I'm doing everything in my
life," she shot back.
While life lends itself to a hectic pace from
city to city for Hema, she won't compromise
on her basic health precautions.
"I have to eat and sleep on time, and
properly. That is non-negotiable," she
said adding that she was more than
contented with life.
"Everything I've wanted has been
mine. I wanted my two daughters to
be happily married. When Esha and
Ahana got married, I didn't get two
sons-in-law. I got two sons. My two
sons-in-law are the sons I never had."
Sippy's last highly acclaimed directorial
venture was the 1985-release "Saagar",
which marked the come-back of
Dimple Kapadia on the silver screen
after a long gap.
"Shimla Mirchi" will go on floors in
mid-September.

PC Snips Steamy Scenes From

Her First Film As A Producer

After former beauty queen and now

a bollywood star and international
singer, Priyanka Chopra added the
title of producer to her resume with
the Madhur Bhandarkar directorial
Madamji. And the actress is taking the
new role, rather seriously.
She has asked the filmmaker to reduce
the number of intimate scenes in the
film she is co-producing with Madhur.
Mirror has it that the actress has demanded
that the sexual content of the film, which
is the story of an item girl who becomes
a politician, be toned down substantially.
A source revealed, "Priyanka and
Madhur are working closely on the
script and recently, she expressed her
reservations to him. Most of the scenes

which she objected to appear in the first

half of the film. There are some intense
love- making scenes and Priyanka
wants some of those edited out."
Madhur, who is currently busy with
the small budget flick Calendar Girls,
is taking a second look at the script to
see if it allows for changes. Madamji
will be Priyanka's second outing with
Madhur after Fashion which won her
a National Award for Best Actress.
In the 2008 film too she had made
him change the climax. The original
end had Priyanka, an ambitious small
town girl who becomes a supermodel,
getting pregnant. But she had vetoed
the idea. Both Madhur and Priyanka
remained unavailable for comment.

Jamai Raja Actor Ravi Dubey

Sings Praises For Mother In Law

The actor opened up about his

relationship with wife Sargun Mehtas
mother
Ravi Dubey has become a popular
household name with his previous show
Saas Bina Sasural where he played the
role of Tej Prakash Chaturvedi. The
show went on to become a hit and the
actor will now be seen in Zee TVs
show Jamai Raja. Ravi will be seen
sharing screen space with Nia Sharma.
In his on-going show, Ravi is seen
sharing a turbulent relationship with his
on-screen mother in law, Anchit Kaur.

The case, however, is very different for

him when it comes to his off-screen
one. The actor apparently shares a
close bond with wifey Sargun Mehtas
mother and is usually all praises for his
sasuma.
The actor, while talking to a daily,
revealed, Shes like my own mother.
I blend with the family so well that I
feel I have been a part of it forever. She
never fails to put a smile on my face.
Well looking at Ravis relationship
with his mother in law, he seems to be
the perfect Jamai Raja!

Ranveer visited the sets of her

ladyloves upcoming film, Tamasha
opposite Ranbir Kapoor, but this visit
didnt go down too well, we hear.
As is well known, Ranveer Singh had
recently flown to Corsica to spend
some quality time with ladylove
Deepika Padukone who was there,
shooting Imtiaz Alis Tamasha with
her ex-beau Ranbir Kapoor. From
what we hear, Ranveer had even
dropped in on the sets to side with
Deepika but the visit did not go down
too well, it seems.

According to a report in a tabloid,

Ranveer sat at the monitor whenever
Deepika faced the camera. As soon as
Imtiaz would call Cut, he would offer
his suggestions to the director. Thats
not all. He cheered for Deepika after
every shot and then went on to give his
inputs on how to improve it.
Naturally, Imtiaz was completely
baffled by Ranveers behaviour, while
Dippy seemed embarrassed. As for
Ranbir, we dont know what was his
reaction. But it sure would be amusing
to know.

Robin Williams Death Was Suicide: Coroner Releases Preliminary

Findings

Oscar-winning actor and renowned

comedian Robin Williams took his own
life in his California home, a coroner
said, based on preliminary findings.
Williams, 63, was found dead by his
personal assistant just before midday on
Monday (local time), Marin County's
assistant chief deputy coroner, Keith
Boyd, told a news conference.
"Mr Williams' personal assistant
became concerned at approximately
11:45am when he failed to respond
to knocks on his bedroom door," Mr
Boyd said.
Williams was last seen alive by his
wife, Susan Schneider, on Sunday
night when she retired for the evening.
She left the next morning around
10am, thinking that her husband was
still asleep.
Williams' publicist, Mara Buxbaum,
said on Monday that the star had been
suffering from severe depression, and
Mr Boyd acknowledged that he had
been seeking treatment without giving
more details.
Mr Boyd would not say if any drugs
or alcohol were involved and said
the full toxicology report would take
several more weeks, stressing that the
investigation was continuing.
In addition to his wife, Williams is
survived by three grown children daughter Zelda and sons Cody and
Zachary.
Funeral arrangements are pending and
Williams' body has been released by
the coroner facility in neighbouring
Napa County.
Comedians, politicians and several
generations of fans are collectively
mourning the death of Williams, famous
for his frenetic and freewheeling
comedy.
The news of his death stunned fans
young and old and comedians who

had been influenced by Williams since

he broke out in the 1970s TV comedy
Mork & Mindy as a strange and lovable
creature from outer space.
Williams had been open about his
struggles with alcohol and cocaine
and in the past months had entered
a rehabilitation centre to help him
maintain sobriety.
But many questions remain over his
final months and what could have led
to his death.
On the Hollywood Walk of Fame,
dozens of fans congregated around
Williams' star early on Tuesday (local
time), leaving flowers and candles to
honour the versatile actor.
Williams' appeal stretched across
generations and genres, from family
fare as the voice of Disney's blue genie
in Aladdin to his portrayal of a fatherly
therapist in the 1997 drama Good Will
Hunting, for which he earned his sole
Oscar.
The death of Williams shook
Hollywood, and colleagues mourned
the loss of what many called a bighearted man and one of the most
inventive comedians of his time.
Hollywood actor-director Ben Affleck
said he was "heartbroken" by the death
of his Good Will Hunting co-star.
"Heartbroken. Thanks chief - for your
friendship and for what you gave the
world," Affleck wrote on his Facebook
and Twitter accounts.
"Robin had a ton of love in him. He
personally did so much for so many
people. He made Matt and my dreams
come true," he added, referring to Matt
Damon, another Good Will Hunting
star.
"What do you owe a guy who does
that? Everything. May you find peace
my friend. #RobinWilliams."
Williams won the best supporting

actor Oscar in 1998 for his portrayal

of a college professor in Good Will
Hunting, directed by Gus Van Sant.
Affleck and Damon also won an
Academy Award for its script, which
they co-wrote.
The doctor and clown whose life story
formed the basis of the movie Patch
Adams also paid tribute.
"The terrible news of the passing of
Robin Williams reached me here in the
Peruvian Amazon late last night with
tremendous sadness," Hunter Doherty
Adams, the founder of the Gesundheit
Institute, wrote on Facebook.
"Surrounded by over 100 friends and
clowns on our annual clown trip here,
we mourn this tragic loss and continue
to treasure his comic genius," said Dr
Adams, who travels the world with
a clown group in an effort to bring
the healing power of laughter to sick
people and orphans.
"I'm enormously grateful for his
wonderful performance of my early
life, which has allowed Gesundheit
to continue and expand our work. We
extend our blessings to his family and
friends in this moment of sadness.
"Thank you for all you've given this
world Robin, thank you my friend."
The 1998 movie, directed by Tom
Shadyac, depicts Dr Adams as a medical
student who battled convention to treat
his patients using laughter.
Williams earned a Golden Globe
nomination for his portrayal of Adams.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played
Williams' daughter in the recent CBS
television comedy, The Crazy Ones,
said her life was better for knowing
Williams.
"To my children he was Uncle Robin,"
Gellar said in a statement.

"To everyone he worked with, he

was the best boss anyone had ever
known, and to me he was not just an
inspiration, but he was the father I had
always dreamed of having."
Comedy legend Robin Williams will
reportedly be laid to rest in the Bay
Area of San Francisco in a private
family funeral.
Susan Schneider, the third wife of
the actor is reportedly planning a
"very private" funeral in the Bay Area,
and family members, including his
31-year-old son Zak, have begun flying
into town ahead of the service.
According to a source, the memorial
will be attended only by close friends
and family, including his younger
children Zelda, 25, and Cody, 22.
"It's not official yet, but that's the plan.
It will be small. They were both very
private people," said a source.
In addition to the private service, the
source says a comedy benefit night will
be held for the public in honour of the
"Hook" actor.

Skin Care Tips That Will Keep

You Looking Younger!

Relationships

How To Win A Guy In 7

Days

Are you vying for the attention of your

college hottie or that handsome suitclad gentleman at work or the guy
you often bump into at your favourite
coffee shop? Have you already started
imagining a rosy future with him but
don't know to approach him.
We tell you how to get the man of your
dreams in just 7 days.
Day 1: Exchanging glances
Making eye contact is the key here.
The way you look at a person says a
lot about your affiliation towards them.
He'll get the hint that you're interested
in him. But, do NOT stare or bump
into him everywhere. You don't have to
show serious stalking tendencies; else,
he'll run away as far as he can.
Day 2: Introduce yourself
Today try initiating a little conversation
with him. He would already have a
faint idea that you're interested in him
but he needs a confirmation before he
would think of making the first move.
Make a small remark when you see
him around and then go ahead and
introduce yourself. You really need to
strike an interesting conversation with
him that would make him remember
you for who you are. Just remember,
he could turn out to be the man of your
dreams, and you wouldn't want to lose
him only because you fret making
the first move. Go ahead, work your
charms on him.
Day 3: Sustain his interest
If you managed to strike a chord the
previous day, he might in all likelihood
approach you today. This would also
give you an impression whether or
not he's actually interested in you.
Furthermore, if he tries a small talk with
you without any initiation, be assured
he is attracted to you. Now the tricky
part, you have just caught his attention
but you need to sustain his interest.
Don't hesitate if he asks you to join him
for lunch or coffee. Just go ahead and
accept the offer. While actually having
a conversation with him for the first
time, ask leading questions and listen
well to his responses. Remember,
men like extrovert and knowledgeable
women with whom they can have a
decent conversation.
Day 4: Passive stalking
It is alright to send him a friend
request on Facebook today. You never
know by now he may already have
sent you one. So get set to do some
research on his likes, interests, his
social circle etc. This would give you
leads for next conversation, but please

refrain from liking or commenting

on any of his old posts or asking him
directly about any of the posts he has
made in the past. This is just to give
you a brief idea about the person he is
and nothing else.
Day 5: Send an event invite
Now, that you're well versed with his
interests, find out what's happening
in the city in line with his interests
(something he can't say no to!) and
then send a group message to a bunch
of your friends including him asking
if you can work a plan of going to the
play/exhibition/concert together. At the
event, just don't drool over or ignore
him completely. But by the same token,
it's important he know that there are
other people in your life as well whom
you are close to. However, pay him just
enough attention to keep his interest in
you going.
Day 6: Let him chase you
You have done enough work. Now,
it's time to reap the fruits of your
hardwork. Wait for his call or text.
Do not send a text yourself and don't
even reply promptly to his text. People
want what they can't have - it's human
psychology. Thus, remaining out of
reach a little and making him realize
that he's still got some work to do will
only add to your advantage.
Day 7: When he actually asks you
out...
The time has come when he'll ask you
out officially on your first date. It's
completely normal to have butterflies
fluttering furiously in your stomach,
but you need to take it easy for your
own good.
Follow these tips for a lasting
impression on him:
- Coco Chanel popularly said, "Dress
shabbily and they remember the dress;
dress impeccably and they remember
the woman." Take her advice.
- Be confident, it is enamoring. There's
nothing better than a women who
knows what she wants and isn't afraid
of voicing it.
- Spray a little perfume into your hair
and flip your locks when you are sitting
with him. There's this thing about the
scent, you remember it even when the
person is not around, so this way, you'll
be in his memory until you meet again.
- Do not forget the golden rule of
looking into his eyes and coyly linger
there for a few seconds. At the end, give
him one last look (a mental image) that
he won't be able to get over in a long
time.

There REALLY are some simple skin

care tips that will help to keep your
skin looking younger, longer. Here are
our top skin care tips to reduce signs of
aging and fight off wrinkles.
Most women and men, given the
choice would rather prevent the look
of premature aging and wrinkles. Of
course, damaged skin and wrinkles are
an inevitable part of aging, but there
are many things that you can do to
look as young as possible for as long
as possible.
Let us start with what is on the inside
of your skin. Healthy eating, good
nutrition and exercise are what keep
your entire system running smoothly.
Many fruits and vegetables are
especially good for your body and
skin because of they contain fiber and
antioxidants. Adding olive oil and more
whole grains is another way to nurture
your body, and by extension your skin.
In conjunction with a healthy diet,
drinking LOTS of water will help keep
you looking younger. Water helps to
keep your skin moist and supple, while
clearing out harmful toxins. Because

fine lines and wrinkles can appear

when your skin is dry, it is vital to stay
hydrated. While studies go back on
forth on the amount of water we need,
consuming a good amount daily will
definitely help your skin.
Getting regular exercise and reducing
stress may not seem like they could
help your skin, but they are both good
skin care tips. Exercise increases your
blood flow, relieves stress, and can
even help lose some weight. When
stressed, your bodys metabolism is
disrupted which can lead to premature
aging. Some good ways to relax and
relieve stress include taking a bath or
meditation.
This a big one that we all know about
and frequently miss. Wear at least an
SPF 15 sunscreen at all times. It is easy
to remember when we are going out
to sunbathe, bike or run, but do you
remember to put it on when you go
to the store or pick your kids up from
school? The suns UV rays can be one
of the most harmful things that touches
your skin today, make sure you protect
yourself with a sunscreen.

How To Take Care Of Your Hair

This Summer
Summer is here and while it's important to take care of your skin, it's as
imperative to make sure your hair gets the right care.

Here are a few tips that can help you

maintain healthy hair throughout
summer:
- Regularly cut and trim your hair. This
will keep the split ends at bay. There is
nothing more appalling than to see hair
with split ends as it gives one a very
disheveled look.
- During summer, the scalp sweats
more and there are chances of dust
getting stuck to the hair, which could
lead to dandruff. This might make you
want to wash your hair every day, but
it is not a good idea to do so since the
hair will be stripped of its natural oils.
Instead, wash it every other day.
- Wash your hair with a clarifying
shampoo. This helps extracting buildup

and residue from the scalp, which in turn,

helps keep your hair healthy and shiny.
-The hair also needs moisturizing,
so using a conditioner is imperative.
Make sure to condition your hair every
time you shampoo it and look for a
conditioner that has protein. When
applying the conditioner, avoid the
scalp and instead restrict it to the hair.
- Another way to hydrate the hair is
to use a leave-in serum, which gives
it a healthy shine and acts as a shield
against dust and heat.
- Oiling your hair once a week is also a
good way to get healthy and shiny hair.
- Go for regular protein treatments to
the salon as they breathe life into dull
and lifeless hair.

5 Awesome Superfoods
The following foods are must-haves
that should always be in your kitchen

will help ensure that you're in tiptop shape and consuming all of the
necessary minerals and vitamins that
the winter season demands.

In addition to supplementing your diet

sauerkraut, dark chocolate, miso soup,
kefir and pickles.

green tea is a daily must-have.
If you're a green tea lover, you can also
try matcha green tea powder, which
goes one step above green tea in terms
of its nutritional value. When it comes

green tea is much more powerful and
potent.
3. Delicious sea vegetables

4. Quinoa

You must eat fat to lose fat. Many of

the clients I've worked with have been
"stuck" in their weight loss because
their diets were too low in fat, causing
their metabolism to slow down. Of
course, fats have more than twice the
calories of protein and carbohydrates,
so portion size is important. However,
incorporating good fats into your diet
is critical for heart health, skin health,
immune system function, cellular
repair and weight loss.
Of all of the "good fats," avocados top
the charts for nutritional profile. High
in monounsaturated fat, rich in both
soluble and insoluble fibre and packed
with disease-fighting antioxidants
called carotenoids, they are a beneficial
addition to salads and wraps or can be
turned into a delicious guacamole dip.
The recommended serving size is 1/4
to 1/2 an avocado per day.

green tea causes the body to secrete the
amino acid L-theanine, which creates a

normal "java jitters."
In addition to containing lots of
antioxidants, green tea is good for heart
health and having anti-aging effects
on your skin. Green tea can also give

sea vegetables include:
Kelp: an excellent source of iodine and

is also high in vitamins and minerals,
especially iron

The People Connection: Creating Instant Rapport with Anyone You

Meet

Al Kamal, MBA
Arza Employment Serv Ltd
Have you ever wondered why it is we
hit it off instantly with some people and
never seem to click with others? Why is
it that there are some people we feel as
if weve known forever and others we
cant seem to relate to even after years
of contact? When we truly connect with
others, we become actively involved in
our conversations. We become more
than nodding heads or worsenodding

off heads! Our involvement hinges on

our strengthening our abilities to be
attentive when conversing with others,
particularly in an interviewing situation.
Ever have a situation where youre
so excited about presenting an idea to
someone else and the response to your
idea is less than enthusiastic? What are
you saying to yourself at that point?
Does it sound something like, That
guy must be nuts. This is the best idea
hes ever going to hear? How about,
Maybe I didnt make myself very
clear The truth of the matter is
when we impose our own expectations
onto others, we put others in a win/lose
situation: Either our conversational
partners respond in ways that are
acceptable to us or they dont. If they
do, we feel weve connected. If they
dont, we think the other person either
has a problem or that we only need to
restate our idea in order for our partner
to be overwhelmed or blown away
with our brilliance.
Lets take a break here. When were
attentive to others, we dont impose
anything on them. We allow people to
be who they are and dont take offense
at their responses. In fact, if were tuned
in we have tremendous opportunity

to explore whats important to our

partners and find ways to meet their
needs.
Most people would agree that trust is
at the heart of all good relationships.
One way to promote trust is to
provide attentiveness in ways that are
noticeable and welcoming.
I remember a situation a while back
when I presented a proposal to a
prospect. I had put a lot of blood,
sweat, and tears into the proposal in the
hopes of securing a customer service
training contract. My driving time to
the prospects location was two hours
each way.
As I handed the proposal to the prospect
to review, she failed to stop her work
on her computer and didnt even pick
the proposal up! I thought at the time
this behavior was a little strange but
believed she would soon stop her
work and look over my offering. She
never did! In fact, not only did she
continue typing, she fielded questions
from people who were simultaneously
popping into her office during my visit.
Somehow miraculously I ended up
getting the contract but ONLY by
realizing the value of my prospects
time. By modifying my approach, I

was able to review the proposal out

loud and review it quickly. When I
finished reading, the prospect turned
and said, Where do I sign?
By all accounts, the prospect had given
me NO attention. In her mind, she was
listening to me all along, but unless
were mind readers we run the risk of
being perceived as self serving. Forego
the risk; if you want to be remembered
in a positive light, give others your
attention.
Ask yourself:

Do I make eye contact when
Im speaking or listening to others?

Do I focus less on myself and
more on others?

Do I avoid preoccupation?

Do I ask for more information
when I dont understand?

Do I put myself in the other
persons shoes?
If you can honestly say that whether
its your customer, a boss, or a future
employer that you value that individual
beyond their title or role, youre on your
way to building long-lasting rapport.
Giving takes many forms and what
others crave from us is the attention,
perception, and responsiveness that
few others provide.

The Canadian Society Of Fiji Muslims Donates To Food Banks

During Ramadhan.

By Mohammed Saddiq
The members of the The Canadian
Society of Fiji Muslims had collected
about 45 boxes of non-perishable food
during the month of Ramadhan.
Aware of the food drive was created
on our Facebook and through word of
mouth.
There was overwhelming support for
the food drive as many people dropped
off food items at various places. These
were then packed up and shared
between the Muslim Food Bank and
Surrey Food Bank.
The president of the Society Bob
Ibrahim said that this generosity of
our brethren during the month of
Ramadhan shows the true meaning
of charity for the less fortunate in
the Society. The Canadian Society of
Fiji Muslims is one a few nonpartisan
charitable and social organization that

works for the benefit of those that are

in dire need of assistance. To this end
the Society has provided much needed
supplies at the food banks, blankets
and socks for the needy during
winter, provided food kitchen for the
homeless and have raised funds for
cancer foundations and other relief
organizations. The president would
like to take this opportunity to invite
the public to buy the tickets for our
upcoming Family Night Dinner
organized by The Canadian Society of
Fiji Muslims on October 25th 2014.
Proceeds from this event will go

Canucks Hire Perry Pearn As

Fiji FA Mourns The Passing Of

Ibrahim

Late Fiji FA senior board member Sheik Ibrahim

The Vancouver Canucks have hired

Perry Pearn as an assistant coach.
Pearn joins the new Vancouver staff
led by head coach Willie Desjardins.
The 63-year-old from Stettler, Alta.,
has spent over 19 NHL seasons as an
assistant coach with Winnipeg, Ottawa,
Montreal and the New York Rangers.
His NHL coaching career began in
1995-96 with Winnipeg, and he spent
the past two seasons with the Jets.

"We are very excited to name Perry to

our staff today," Vancouver Canucks
general manager Jim Benning said in
a statement. "Perry brings a wealth of
experience and knowledge at the NHL
level to our organization."
On the international stage, Pearn coached
Canada to gold at the 1993 world junior
championship. He also served as an
assistant on championship-winning
Canadian teams in 1990 and 1991.

Tee-Off

Two of the worlds best golfers, Vijay

Singh and Nick Price have praised
the Fiji International as it started at
the Natadola Bay Championship Golf
Course.
Singh called for more participation of
Fijians in the next tournaments while
Price commended the course, Fiji and
its people.
Singh was surprised that only four
Fijian golfers including amateur Sam
Lee are in the tournament,
I was really surprised about that, to
give Fijian golfers a chance without
qualifying and if it was in another
country, they would give five to ten
local golfers, Singh said.
I think they should sort that end and
give those spots in tournaments in
future years.
The 51-year-old is among a field of 120
in the inaugural event which include
Zimbabwean and fellow former World
Number One Nick Price.
Its been incredible. A lot of people
did recognise me this time around
when I came here to do the golf course.
Maybe a lot of people heard that I am
around and it was nice visiting places
that you grew up in. I am excited for
the tournament since I only come here
to visit families.

Singh was part of the initial planning

of the course.
It was supposed to be built for future
tournaments. They did have a couple
of events here and my last visit was
in 2006. I am happy with the way it is
now.
He said the wind would be their biggest
challenge.
The golf course is exposed to the
wind. The greens are elevated with a
lot of ventilation changes. From the
tee, the fairway to the greens and the
wind really blows here, he said.
Price, on the other hand, praised the
Fijian hospitality and predicted that
scores would be close.
Its one of the prettiest places Ive
been to. I go to the Bahamas a lot and
the only other place Ive seen water
this pretty is in the Bahamas and it is
(Fiji) a place Ive always wanted to
come to, Price said.
This golf course, its an absolute gem,
all these beautiful views that you have
over the golf course, over the ocean. I
think the most incredible thing to me
is how friendly everyone is. My family
and I have been overwhelmed by the
hospitality and the friendliness of all
the Fijian people.
Its fascinating that such a small

Fiji Football Association is saddened

to learn of the sudden passing away of
their senior board member Mr. Sheik
Ibrahim.
Ibrahim passed away at the CWM
hospital in Suva after battling a kidney
disease since 2011. He was 67 years old.
Fiji FA President and Oceania Football
Confederation Executive Committee
member Rajesh Patel said Ibrahim will
be missed by the football family in Fiji.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with his
family who will have to go through this
difficult phase, Patel said.
We have lost a great man today. One
who had football in his heart and
football was his life. He immensely
contributed towards the development
of football in Fiji and leaves behind a

legacy which many of us would only

dream of fulfilling.
He had a vision to take Fiji FA to
greater heights and it is now our duty
to continue his work as he is no longer
amongst us. Ibrahim departs us now
for a new journey and may his soul rest
in peace, Patel said.
Ibrahim served the Fiji FA board for
more than 30 years. He was appointed
as a senior Fiji FA vice president in
2011 after being elected.
In his colorful football administrator
career he also served as the Fiji Primary
Schools soccer association and Labasa
Football association as their president.
He acted in the role of Fiji FA president
in 2011.
Mr. Ibrahim was laid to rest in Labasa.

island nation could produce a golfer

like Vijay. I come from a small country,
we have a few more golf courses but
we have a lot in common that way.
Its been a pretty busy last two days,
so Im looking forward to playing some
golf. The wind is going to be a factor;
there are a couple of holes out there that
are very difficult when the wind blows.
So, I think if the tour staff, the guys who
set up the course, if theyre aware of
those difficult holes, itd be little bit.
Some of the greens are a bit severe,
thats easily fixed, and thats not a
major issue. This has the potential to
be a wonderful golf course, just a bit of
changes here and there and just make it
a little easier especially for the average
folk who come and play it, but how can
you, its so beautiful out there its hard
to concentrate on golf half the time.
Price rates Vijay to win the tournament.
Hes the one all eyes are on this week.
Id love to see him win it, I really
would. Id love to win it, but lets put it
this way. Ive got a great future behind
me. Ill be happy if I make the cut

and play well this week; playing with

young guys. I guess Vijay is 51, so Ive
got him by six years, but Im going to
have fun either way.
Its all dependent on the weather and
how hard the wind blows. If they set
this course up hard then I think the
score will be quite high. I agree with
Vijay on single digits under par to win
so it could be anywhere from 2 7, 8
under par.
Right now Ill take anything under
par, Id be very happy and I know Id
be close to the lead, I dont think, even
if the wind is as gentle as it is today, its
still a challenge this golf course.
Meanwhile other Fijians playing in
the tournament include Japan-based
Dinesh Chand (professional), and
amateur Sam Lee.
Singh could not confirm if he would be
part of the 2016 Rio Olympics.
He tees-off with Australian Brendan
Jones and veteran Paul Gow at 7.35am.
Price tees-off with Australian Matthew
Griffin and Mark Brown from New
Zealand at 12.05pm.

LA Clippers Sold To Ex-Microsoft

Boss Steve Ballmer

Mr Ballmer said he hopes to attend a lot of Clippers games next season

Former Microsoft chief executive
Steve Ballmer has purchased the Los
Angeles Clippers for $2bn after a court
cleared the way for the sale.
A Los Angeles judge confirmed Shelly
Sterling could sell the basketball
franchise over the objections of her
estranged husband Donald Sterling.
Mr Sterling, the owner since 1981, was
banned from the sport for life after he
was recorded making racist remarks.
The $2bn sale price is the highest ever
paid for an NBA team.
"Really excited - in a pretty hardcore
way to continue the path to making the
Clippers a better and better basketball
team, and a better and better citizen of
the Los Angeles community," said Mr
Ballmer.
Mr Ballmer moved quickly after the
Superior Court Judge Michael Levanas
signed the order authorising the sale
even if Donald Sterling's lawyers filed
an appeal.

"We were ready," lawyer Adam

Streisand said. "Within minutes, the
deal was signed, sealed and delivered."
The Clippers coach, Doc Rivers, had
threatened to quit if he remained
owner.
And point guard and president of
the players association Chris Paul
suggested he would sit out and try to
convince other players to join him
if Mr Sterling continued to own the
franchise.
The 80-year-old real estate businessman
had fought in court over a deal his wife
said he had initially praised.
Richard Parsons will continue as
interim chief executive, Mr Ballmer
added.
The sale ends Mr Sterling's run as the
longest-tenured owner in the National
Basketball Association (NBA). He
bought the Clippers in 1981, moving
the team from San Diego to Los
Angeles in 1984.

Vijay Singh Inspires Anirban

Lahiri

Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri, 27, is

regarded as one of the rising stars of
the sport in the world.
He is currently Indias Number One.
He is in the country to play in
the inaugural Fiji International
which started at the Natadola Bay
Championship Golf Course.
He has won 11 professional titles since
turning professional in 2007.
Lahiri brings a burst of youth to the
Natadola greens in the next four days
when playing among some of the best
in the world and some uprising big
hitters.
I am very excited to be here. This is
my first time in Fiji, Lahiri said.
It is far away from India. Conditions
are beautiful, quite windy and I think it
will be challenging.
There are a lot of great players
including Nick Price, but I am looking
forward to play.
He admitted that Fijis Vijay Singh,
Tiger Woods and his fellow countryman
Jeev Milkha Singh helped in his golf
career.
Vijay Singh has been one of my idols
and he is from here, he said.
Jeev Milkha Singh (top ever Indian
pro to break in the top 100 in 2006) has
put Indian golf on the world.
Vijay was the first guy to look up to

as he works hard and climbed up the

ladder, whereas Tiger is gifted when he
was in his best. I look up to them for
their own specialty.
I have met Dinesh Chand (Japanbased Fijian) and there is a lot of Indian
influence here in Fiji.
Obviously there is a lot of interest
here. I had a great year, great 18 months
and hoping to be in the right direction
to play well.
Lahiri is not fond of cricket like most
back home.
Golf has been everything for me for
the last decade or so. When I am not
playing golf, I need to spend time with
my family or just put my feet up and
relax.
His appearance at his second Major
will cap-off a successful 12 months for
Lahiri who currently leads the Asian
Tour Order of Merit after his win on
the tour in April. He also represented
India at the World Cup of Golf last
November.
His father was an amateur golfer.
Anirban started shooting his way up the
ranks from junior, amateur and then
professional playing for Bangalore,
India and in the international scene. He
tees-off today at 11.55am at Natadola
in the First Round with Australian
Craig Parry and Koreas Kim Bi-o.
