Saint Michael Parish Mission Statement:
We the parishioners of Saint Michael the Archangel, through leadership and strong traditions
are faithful disciples of the teachings of Jesus Christ and His Catholic Church. We commit our-
selves to be generous stewards of our faith, our parish, and our community. We strive to involve all
members to be united in one parish family for the salvation of all.

Notes from the Pastor - A Blessed and Happy Labor Day Weekend! Once more this is another celebration
that gives us opportunity to thank God for the gift of labor! On the feast of Saint Joseph the Worker, Pope Fran-
cis expounded on the theme of the dignity of work. He said: "We do not get dignity from power or money or
culture. We get dignity from workWork is fundamental to the dignity of the person. Work, to use an image,
'anoints' with dignity, fills us with dignity, makes us similar to God who has worked and still works, who always
acts.
Unfortunately, many people around the world are still suffering from unemployment. Those employed espe-
cially in third world countries are so much underpaid. The Pope criticized societies that put company profits
above human dignity or even human life. "What point have we come to?" he asked. He noted that Jesus was a
worker and lamented companies that put much more attention to profits than the dignity of labor. He ended his
homily with the admonition: "I address a strong appeal that the dignity and safety of the worker always be pro-
tected." Another issue that plagued our societies nowadays is child labor. According to the International Labor
Organization (ILO), in June this year, an estimated 10.5 million children worldwide are working as domestic
workers in people's homes. Six and a half million of these child laborers are aged between five and 14 years old
and more than 71 per cent are girls, it said. In a message from the Vatican to mark the World Day against Child
Labor, the Pope decried the "slavery" of child labor, which he said was on the rise in poor countries and affected
young girls in particular. "There are millions of minors, mostly young girls, who are victims of this form of hid-
den exploitation which often includes sexual abuse, poor treatment and discrimination," he told a crowd of
60,000 gathered in St Peter's Square for his weekly audience. Pope Francis called for "ever more effective
measures to fight this plague," which he said was "a deplorable phenomenon constantly on the increase."
For the farmers among us here in Girard and Arma, the words of Saint John Paul II in his homily to Farmers
during his visit in Iowa on Oct. 4, 1979 should be a source of inspiration and encouragement to all: To all of
you who are farmers and all who are associated with agricultural production I want to say this: the Church
highly esteems your work. Christ himself showed his esteem for agricultural life when he described God his
Father as the "vinedresser" (Jn 15:1). You cooperate with the Creator, the "vinedresser", in sustaining and

nurturing life. You fulfill the command of God given at the very
beginning: "Fill the earth and subdue it" (Gen 1:28)Three atti-
tudes in particular are appropriate for rural life. In the first place:
gratitude. Recall the first words of Jesus in the Gospel we have
just heard, words of gratitude to his heavenly father: "Father,
Lord of heaven and earth, to you I offer praise". Let this be your
attitude as well. Every day the farmer is reminded of how much he
depends upon God. From the heavens come the rain, the wind and
the sunshine. They occur without the farmer's command or control.
The farmer prepares the soil, plants the seed, and cultivates the
crop. But God makes it grow; he alone is the source of life
Secondly, the land must be conserved with care since it is intended
to be fruitful for generation upon generationWhile it is true here
that farming today provides an economic livelihood for the farmer,
still it will always be more than an enterprise of profit-making. In
farming, you cooperate with the Creator in the very sustenance of
life on earth... In the third place, I want to speak about generosity,
a generosity which arises from the fact that "God destined the
earth and all it contains for all men and all peoples so that all
created things would be shared fairly by all mankind under the
guidance of justice tempered by charity" (Gaudium et Spes, 69).
You who are farmers today are stewards of a gift from God which
was intended for the good of all humanity. You have the potential
to provide food for the millions who have nothing to eat and thus
help to rid the world of famine. To you I direct the same question
asked by Paul VI five years ago: "if the potential of nature is im-
mense, if that of the mastery of the human genius over the universe
seems almost unlimited, what is it that is too often missing ... ex-
cept that generosity, that anxiety which is stimulated by the sight of
the sufferings and the miseries of the poor, that deep conviction
that the whole family suffers when one of its members is in

our society, for businesses and employers to have a moral conscience,
for all workers, farmers, fisherman, and for the end of child labor. May
God be praised through the work of our hands!
