Parishioners may remember and be aware the
Principal of Holy Name School, Mark Mowbray, was
seconded to St Josephs, Taree at the beginning of this
year as Principal in a temporary capacity.

Following the expected adversing and interviewing
process, Mark has now been appointed by Bishop Bill
to that role in a permanent capacity eecve
immediately.

Mark has been the Principal of Holy Name School for
the last 17 years, and the School owes him a great
debt for his eorts and leadership that have made the
School what it is today. The Parish, too, should be
rightly proud of the Parish School, and thankful to
Mark for all that he done.

We wish Mark every blessing as he embarks on this
new part of his professional journey.

The posion of Principal of Holy Name School will now
be adversed, and a process of consultaon with the
School and wider Parish community will take place as
part of seeking to appoint a new Principal.

HOMILY by Richard Leonard SJ
A conservave Protestant Church in a sleepy shing
village had to nd a new minister. Over the protests of
Jimmy, the senior Elder, a woman was hired as the
new Pastor.

Aer the Reverend Gayle had been there a few weeks,
Tom, a member of the congregaon, oered to take
her out shing. Jimmy reluctantly agreed to allow
them to use his boat for the days oung, but insisted
that he lead the expedion.

The trio got into the boat and motored out on the
lake. When they got ready to sh, they realised that
all their tackle had been le on the dock. Tom
concluded that they would just have to go back and
get it. Reverend Gayle said that wouldn't be
necessary, and she got out of the boat and started
walking across the water toward the dock.

Jimmy, who refused to be impressed by Gayles
miraculous abilies observed, See I told you we never
should have hired that woman. She can't even swim.
The hit animaon lm Shrek was praised by crics for
many things but most especially for the clever way it
quoted from several other muchloved animaon
lms. When writers do this its called intertextuality,
where one text uses another text to tell the story.
Some of the references in Shrek were obvious; others
took a lile longer to reveal themselves. Some were
used in a new way that turned the original story
upside down. Whether any of us got all or none of the
references didnt aect the enjoyment we derived
from the lm, it only added to what was already a
great tale.

The story of Jesus walking on the water is in a similar
vein to Shrek. In eleven verses Mahew quotes several
other stories in the Old Testament, uses them in his
own way and reinterprets all of them in reference to
Jesus. It might be lost on some of us who just enjoy
the power of the story, but none of this intertextuality
would have been lost on Mahews rst hearers.

Poor old Job found God in the midst of a storm, and
winds and waves are a usual Old Testament shorthand
for the perils of life. The image of the boat was an
early symbol for the Church and Mahew has all
Jesus disciples in it. Jesus hovering over the waters
has echoes of the acon of the Spirit in the rst
account of creaon in Genesis. Even Jesus restoring
calm to the sea follows on from what the Prophet
Jonah had done before. For the keen student there is
much more besides.

Mahews account is magnicent on its own terms,
but with these details we can see he is also interested
in a theological message. Jesus, the Son of God and
Lord of creaon, remains faithful to the disciples, no
maer how treacherous the seas or how great their
fear. He has come to them so that they may be saved
and recreated as the Church who recognises that he is
the fullment of creaon, the one whom Israel has
been longing to see and embrace.

And what does all this mean for us?
We are inheritors of Mahews faith. Were here
because we believe that Jesus is the Son of God who
has saved us from ourselves and from destrucon. But
it also means that in every storm that threatens our
lifeboat Jesus comes to call us to faith, to catch us
when we think were drowning, to accompany us back
to safety and to bring calm to the troubled seas of our
life. Richard Leonard, SJ

A number of quesons have been received that focus
on the Oertory Prayers and why those prayers are
not said aloud by the priest celebrant.

The answer to this quesons is essenally a
combinaon of a) because the rules dont permit it,
and b) because it doesnt make much sense ritually to
do so.

The General Instrucon of the Roman Missal which is
found at the beginning of the Roman Missal has this
to say:

141. The Priest accepts the paten with the bread at
the altar, holds it slightly raised above the altar
with both hands and says quietly, Benedictus es,
Domine (Blessed are you, Lord God). Then he
places the paten with the bread on the corporal.

142. Aer this, as the minister presents the cruets,
the Priest stands at the side of the altar and pours
wine and a lile water in the chalice, saying quietly,
Per huius aquae (By the mystery of this water).
He returns to the middle of the altar and with both
hands raises the chalice a lile, and says quietly,
Benedictus es, Domine (Blessed are you, Lord
God). Then he places the chalice on the corporal
and, if appropriate, covers it with a pall.

If, however, there is no Oertory Chant and the
organ is not played, in the presentaon of the
bread and wine the Priest may say the formulas of
blessing aloud and the people acclaim, Blessed be
God for ever.

The assumpon of the rubrics (the liturgical rules) is
that the two prayers of blessing over bread and wine
would be said quietly by the priest celebrant while the
community is singing an appropriate hymn. Only if
there is no music is it permissible for the priest
celebrant to say those blessing prayers aloud, thus
enabling the community to respond with Blessed be
God forever.

In our own context this would eecvely prohibit
these two prayers of blessing being said aloud at the
Saturday evening Mass and 9am Sunday morning
Mass because there is a hymn being sung during this
acon. The only Sunday Mass in our Parish where this
would be a possibility would be the 7am Sunday
morning Mass.

I have heard from some parishioners who have visited
other places that these prayers are always said, even
when a hymn is sung during the procession of the
gis. It would be my contenon that such a pracce is
contrary to the rubrics and thus to be avoided.
The preparaon of the gis is, ritually speaking, a
minor aspect of the enre liturgy that is the Mass.
While it is possible for the prayer of blessing over
bread and wine to be said aloud, the highlighng of
this relavely minor aspect of Mass would draw
aenon away from what comes immediately before
and immediately aer this acon.

The focus of this part of the Mass is the oering of the
gis of bread and wine (and other gis where
appropriate) during the procession, and then the
oering of those same gis to God beginning with the
Prayer over the Oering. The preparaon of the bread
and wine is, largely, a praccal element that needs to
take place.

It should be remembered that the praying of these
prayers of blessing over bread and wine quietly is not
designed to preclude the community from prayers of
praise or the oering of sacrice. Both of these two
dimensions of our liturgy nd their fullment in the
Eucharisc Prayer, the name of which literally means
Thanksgiving, and which is the prayer of the enre
community given voice by the priest celebrant.

It should also be remembered that the praying aloud
of these prayers over bread and wine is at the
discreon of the priest celebrant (but only when there
is no singing) and, whether they are said aloud or
quietly, are a preliminary and relavely minor act of
our celebraon of Mass that does not exclude the
community from prayers of sacrice or oering. Some
priests will occasionally say these prayers over bread
and wine aloud when they can legimately do so;
some (such as myself) very rarely do. Either course of
acon is liturgically and rubrically correct

This pracce is not a recent development either. The
post Vacan II liturgy has always had this
understanding of this aspect of the celebraon of
Mass (along with the same rubrical requirements)
because the understanding of the nature of oering
and sacrice during the Mass has developed towards a
recognion that these elements are, rst and
foremost, to be found during the Eucharisc Prayer. It
might be considered unfortunate that in the
introducon of the reformed liturgy the prayers over
bread and wine started to be said aloud almost
immediately which may have established an
expectaon that it was proper for them to be said
aloud when the opposite was, in fact, more in keeping
with the reformed liturgy.

If you have a queson that youve always wanted an
answer to, now is your chance to ask. Quesons can be
submied for Fr Andrew either by email or by wrien
note.
