This patent document describes a shredder with a jam proof system. The jam proof system includes a thickness detector with a contact member that displaces when an article is inserted into the shredder throat. A resistance generating mechanism provides a resistance force to the contact member based on the amount of displacement. When a predetermined thickness is reached, there is a significant change in the resistance force to provide feedback to the user that the article may be too thick. The system may include springs and a sensor such as a Hall effect sensor to measure thickness and communicate with a controller.
