Haliddakani Sutta

Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Venerable Mahakaccana was dwelling
among the people of Avanti on Mount Papata at Kuraraghara. Then the householder
aliddakani approached the Venerable Mahakaccana! paid homage to him! sat down
to one side! and said to him"
#Venerable sir! this was said b$ the %lessed One in &The 'uestions of Magandi$a& of
the Atthakavagga"
'aving left home to roam without
abode!
In the village the sage is intimate with
none(
)id of sensual pleasures! without
e*pectations!
e would not engage people in
dispute.&

K,mehi ritto apurekkhar,no
Katha+ na vigga$ha /anena ka$ir,#ti.
ow! venerable sir! should the meaning of this! stated b$ the %lessed One in brief!
be understood in detail0#
#The form element! householder! is the home of consciousness( one whose
consciousness is shackled b$ lust for the form element is called one who roams
about in a home. The feeling element is the home of consciousness ... The
perception element is the home of consciousness ... The volitional formations
element is the home of consciousness( one whose consciousness is shackled b$ lust
for the volitional formations element is called one who roams about in a home. It is
in such a wa$ that one roams about in a home.
#And how! householder! does one roam about homeless0 The desire! lust! delight!
and craving! the engagement and clinging! the mental standpoints! adherences!
and underl$ing tendencies regarding the form element" these have been abandoned
b$ the Tathagata! cut o1 at the root! made like a palm stump! obliterated so that
the$ are no more sub/ect to future arising. Therefore the Tathagata is called one
who roams about homeless. The desire! lust! delight! and craving! the engagement
and clinging! the mental standpoints! adherences! and underl$ing tendencies
regarding the feeling element ... the perception element ... the volitional formations
element ... the consciousness element" these have been abandoned b$ the
Tathagata! cut o1 at the root! made like a palm stump! obliterated so that the$ are
no more sub/ect to future arising. Therefore the Tathagata is called one who roams
about homeless. It is in such a wa$ that one roams about homeless.
#And how! householder! does one roam about in an abode0 %$ di1usion and
con2nement in the abode 3consisting in4 the sign of forms! one is called one who

roams about in an abode. %$ di1usion and con2nement in the abode 3consisting in4
the sign of sounds ... the sign of odours ... the sign of tastes ... the sign of tactile
ob/ects ... the sign of mental phenomena! one is called one who roams about in an
abode.
#And how! householder! does one roam about without abode0 6i1usion and
con2nement in the abode 3consisting in4 the sign of forms" these have been
abandoned b$ the Tathagata! cut o1 at the root! made like a palm stump!
obliterated so that the$ are no more sub/ect to future arising. Therefore the
Tathagata is called one who roams about without abode. 6i1usion and con2nement
in the abode 3consisting !in4 the sign of sounds ... the sign of odours ... the sign of
tastes ... the sign of tactile ob/ects ... the sign of mental phenomena" these have

#And how! householder! is one intimate in the village0 ere! householder! someone
lives in association with la$people" he re/oices with them and sorrows with them! he
is happ$ when the$ are happ$ and sad when the$ are sad! and he involves himself
in their a1airs and duties. It is in such a wa$ that one is intimate in the village.
#And how! householder! is one intimate with none in the village0 ere! householder!
a bhikkhu does not live in association with la$people. e does not re/oice with them
or sorrow with them! he is not happ$ when the$ are happ$ and sad when the$ are
sad! and he does not involve himself in their a1airs and duties. It is in such a wa$
that one is intimate with none in the village.
#And how! householder! is one not rid of sensual pleasures0 ere! householder!
someone is not devoid of lust! desire! a1ection! thirst! passion! and craving in
regard to sensual pleasures. It is in such a wa$ that one is not rid of sensual
pleasures.
#And how! householder! is one rid of sensual pleasures0 ere! householder!
someone is devoid of lust! desire! a1ection! thirst! passion! and craving in regard to
sensual pleasures. It is in such a wa$ that one is rid of sensual pleasures.
#And how! householder! does one entertain e*pectations0 ere! householder!
someone thinks" &Ma$ I have such form in the future7 Ma$ I have such feeling in the
future7 Ma$ I have such perception in the future7 Ma$ I have such volitional
formations in the future7 Ma$ I have such consciousness in the future7& It is in such a
wa$ that one entertains e*pectations.
#And how! householder! is one without e*pectations0 ere! householder! someone
does not think" &Ma$ I have such form in the future7... Ma$ I have such
consciousness in the future7& It is in such a wa$ that one is without e*pectations.

#And how! householder! does one engage people in dispute0 ere! householder!
someone engages in such talk as this" &9ou don&t understand this 6hamma and
6iscipline. I understand this 6hamma and 6iscipline. :hat! $ou understand this
6hamma and 6iscipline7 9ou&re practising wrongl$! I&m practising rightl$. :hat
should have been said before $ou said after( what should have been said after $ou
said before. I&m consistent! $ou&re inconsistent. :hat $ou took so long to think out
has been overturned. 9our thesis has been refuted. .o o1 to rescue $our thesis! for
$ou&re defeated! or disentangle $ourself if $ou can.& It is in such a wa$ that one
engages people in dispute.
#And how! householder! does one not engage people in dispute0 ere! householder!
someone does not engage in such talk as this" &9ou don&t understand this 6hamma
and 6iscipline....& It is in such a wa$ that one does not engage people in dispute.
#Thus! householder! when it was said b$ the %lessed One in &The 'uestions of
Magandi$a& of the Atthakavagga"
&aving left home to roam without abode! In the village the sage is intimate with
none( )id of sensual pleasures! without e*pectations! e would not engage people
in dispute&;
it is in such a wa$ that the meaning of this! stated in brief b$ the %lessed One!
should be understood in detail.#
