Class Syllabus Welcome to an exciting new year at La Mesa Junior High School! I am looking forward to our learning adventures together this year. ur !nglish class will "e challenging# fun# and rewarding. I am devoted to making my classroom a comforta"le learning environment where you are encouraged to ask $uestions and make mistakes. %fter all# making mistakes is how we learn! Course content and class guidelines &sing the text Prentice Hall Literature, Bronze level# as well as su''lemental readings# we will ex'lore short stories# novels# 'oetry# drama# and ex'ository writings. Language arts activities such as 'rocess writing# timed writing# inde'endent readings with $ui((es# voca"ulary# grammar# and mechanics will all emerge from this literature. Students are ex'ected to come to class ready to "e actively involved in the lesson. It is necessary for them to "e 're'ared each day with the 'ro'er materials. Since writing# grammar# and reading are vital "uilding "locks for future success in school and in life# it is imperative to com'lete and turn in all assignments on a daily "asis. It is also im'ortant to ask and answer $uestions# ask for hel'# and %LW%)S use time wisely. !ach day you will find an agenda written on the "oard. *lease read this each day when you come to class and "egin writing the homework 'ortion in your +,inder -eminder. as soon as the "ell rings. You are required to copy the homework assignment every day. HOMEWORK is generally assigned /01 times a week. However# on occasion# you may have reading assignments and 'ro2ects that re$uire additional time. ften# we will correct our homework the next day in class. 3orrecting our work together allows you to identify and clarify trou"lesome areas# understand where you are making mistakes# and reinforce the conce'ts. It will also tell me what conce'ts need to "e revisited or re0taught. )ou are fre$uently given the o''ortunity to start homework in class. If you are ex'eriencing difficulties with an assignment# 'lease talk to me. 4ee' in mind that the first few weeks may "e an ad2usting 'eriod as you learn to manage your time and the workload. Absences If you are a"sent on the day an assignment is given# you have three days to make it u'. If you are a"sent on the day an assignment is collected# it is due the day you return to school. If you are a"sent on the day of a test# you must make u' the test within a week. )ou can schedule a time with me during "runch or lunch. 5 If you are a"sent it is your responsibility to find out what assignments you missed. 6here are folders in the "ack of my room where a"sent work will "e located. )ou must check the folder on the day you return to school to see what you missed.
