In this week I understood the activities of IT in an organization and related level of

maturity. I learnt about CIO and his background to be a mix of business and IT.
The discussion of the case Googles act of buying and selling of Motorola and their
business model helped me to understand how classification frame work for benefits
in a business case. How IT system impacts an organization and how decisions to
me made either centralized or decentralized.
Apart from this weekly discussion and readings over social media influence
over organization gave me an idea how social media impacts the organization. The
discussion board has raised some interesting points that made to think deeper and
explore about social media in an organization
In this week session I learnt the following
From weekly discussions I learnt that a CIO should possess both strong IT and business
backgrounds for high success. Also he should have good communication skills and leadership
qualities.
I learnt about centralization and decentralization and federal organizational structures and
their pros and cons and that a hybrid structure is best suited for organizations which allow
decentralization within centralized organization.
I became familiar with topics like IT governance and Security.
I understood IS and IT concepts and what are all the activities in IT organization and
leadership within IT organization.
I even learnt about the role of informal networking (which includes social media and virtual
communities) in promoting a business organization.
Hello all,
Had an interesting discussion of social media on discussion board & had a joy of learning.
In this week, I learned about,
1. Role of information system on the flow of information in an organization.
2. Social Networks, & how idea brokers help in sparking cross-divisional innovation from course material
Managing corporate social networks
3. How organizational & national culture impacts on social media
4. How Social media acts as a super directory from Managing & Using Information systems Keri & Carol
5. How do managers use technical tools to manage social media?

Waiting for an enjoyable & interesting MBA 610 next week .
In this weeks course I was able get an insight into what background a CIO must
possess. Apart from that I was able to understand that Managing IS is the application
of IT to support the major functions and activities of either a private sector business
or public sector institution. In the past, organizations recognized the importance of
managing resources such as labor, capital, and raw materials. Today, it is widely
accepted that managing the information resource is very often equally important.
Besides the difference between IT and IS, I was able to understand
o how IT is useful to organization and its impact.
o how IT has changed the way the managers evaluate and monitor.
o formal reporting relationships and organization structures.
o IS and Managent control.
o IS and culture.
o Through this weeks discussions I really reflected on the potential use of social
networking in an organization. I have avoided social networking in my
personal life and with working in smaller organizations havent had much
exposure in my professional life either. This lack of experience definitely
skewed my initial view of moving away from traditional business
communication means to more of a social networking atmosphere.
o
o Regardless of my resistance I do believe this weeks discussions have shown
various facets in-which social networking can have an immensely positive
impact on an organization. I do believe most value will be achieved in larger
organizations since they tend to have the greatest communication barriers. As
Marcus clearly described in his post, people are a companys greatest assets
and they need to be leveraged as much as possible. Social networks are the
tool to do this and by flattening out traditional hierarchical structures and
promoting more collaboration should spark greater innovation and process
improvement.
o
o I dont see the trend of social networking in business slowing down anytime
soon. More than likely it will continue to gain steam as more organizations
see the positive effect it can have. What Ill really be interested to see is
whether organizations implement similar to Cemex where they take a very
long and structured approach. Or, organizations take a more haphazard
approach and really let their employees use their own creativity and define
what the system will look like. Additionally, whichever way this gets
implemented, adding the cultural variable will inevitably impact
strategy. Many in the class had some good ideas on this and I really enjoyed
reading them. All in all, this weeks readings and discussion was extremely
interesting.
