Organisations are becoming

increasingly concerned about

climate change and are
looking at ways to reduce
their environmental impact.
The IT department of any
organisation has a key role
to play in this regard. Green
IT in Practice: How One
Company Is Approaching
the Greening of Its IT is
a reference guide that provides organisations
with guidance on how to implement a green
IT programme. Using the case study of UK
company John Lewis Partnership, author Gary
Hird explains the problems that were faced in
implementing the green IT programme, as well as
the solutions to the problems.
Green IT in Practice is targeted at IT
professionals, management and anyone with an
interest in green IT. Hird is an IT strategist for
John Lewis Partnership and has worked there
for more than 20 years. He has been responsible
for the enterprises green IT infrastructure
initiatives since 2006. Hirds practical experience
in the field makes the book valuable for any
individual or organisation involved with green IT
programmes.
Green IT in Practice begins by exploring the
concept of green IT and proceeds to explain how
to get started with a green IT programme. The
use of metrics to measure the success of green
IT initiatives is discussed in chapter three. Hird
also outlines how the John Lewis Partnership
engaged its staff and suppliers in its green IT
initiatives, and he explains further some green IT
projects that were undertaken at the John Lewis
Partnership, including server virtualisation, green
printing and desktop power management.
A key strength of Green IT in Practice: How
One Company Is Approaching the Greening of Its
IT is its case-study approach, which gives readers
insight into how the John Lewis Partnership
implemented its green IT programme. The
teachings from this case study are invaluable to
any organisation going through or intending to
implement green IT initiatives.
