Illuminating Thethe Sophomores
(smord med lille i overskrifter)
The effectiveness of the United States educational system has been a major subject in the latest years. In
that connection, the First Lady, otherwise knowna.k.a. as Mrs. Obama, visited the Columbia Heights
Education Campus in Washington, this being the second time she have visited. In both of the speeches, the
First Lady put a great amount of effort into convincing the sophomores, that they need to spit on the odds
meget talesprog, and do whatever they can to graduate further than high school, as the future of the
United States, and their own future depends on it.
Every speech contains at least two things, a sender who wants to remit something and receivers who has to
interpret the message. In this speech, the sender is Mrs. Obama representing the government, as she is the
one performing the speech. The primary receivers are the Columbia Heights sophomores, but the speech is
also meant to be send to the whole nation.
The message of the speech is mentioned many times, here are some examples: Now, Barack set this goal
because as a -- a generation ago, we were number one in college graduates. But over the past couple of
decades, this country has slipped all the way to 12th. Weve slipped. And thats unacceptable, and weve all
got a lot of work to do to turn that around and get back on top.
1

And heres another example: But no matter what path you choose, no matter what dreams you have, you
have got to do whatever it takes to continue your education after high school again, whether thats going
to community college, getting a technical certificate, or completing a training opportunity, or going off to a
four-year college.

As mMentioned earlier, the main subject of the speech is to encourage sophomores to graduate beyond
High School. There is always a very specific way to communicate a message, but it is usually done by
appealing tousing the appeal forms logos, pathos and ethos. That is appealing to the receivers sense of
reason, the receivers sense of emotion and the senders sense of credibility. Much similar to her husband,
Mrs. Obama uses all of these forms and this is an attempt analyse some of it.
In the first five lines
3
, we see Mrs. Obama appealing to ethospas p her (se ovenfor - man kan ikke
appellere til ethos, men bruge ethos til appellere med); this is probably also one of the clearest attempts.

As mentioned earlier, she visited the school once before, but this time she is without the president,
.Ttherefore she quickly refers Mr. Obama, as some kind of credibility source. Obviously, the president is a
great credibility source; therefore, this is a great example of ethos applied, to kick off the speech. She
also refers to a few other credibility sources just below the aforementioned example, like Mayor Gray, Kaya
Henderson and the Chancellor of the D.C. Public Schools.
Mrs. Obama is also quick to apply logos , appealing to peoples sense of reason. She mentions that when
Barack first came into the presidential office, one of the first things he did was set a North Star goal for
the entire country, that by the year of 2020, America is supposed to have the highest proportion of college
graduates, in the entire world.
4
She mentions the goal has been set, because a generation ago America
were on 1
st
place, but has now slipped to 12
th
place.
5
Mrs. Obamas arguments appeal to the sophomores
common sense , and as America are used to be on 1
st
place in almost everything, whether it is military,
economy or college graduates, this major slip must seem unacceptable from the students point of view.
Mrs. Obama then combines logos and pathos, appealing to both reason and feelings. Once again, she
mentions Barack as a credibility source, and then mentions his goal is not only for the country, but also for
all individuals. Mrs. Obama arguments by saying two-thirds of all jobs in the US by 2020 will need some sort
of education beyond High School, and that the sophomores needs these higher educations, in order to
build their careers and provide for their families.
6
This appeals to both pathos and logos, as the US needs
them, which is common sense, but they also need to care for themselves, which appeals to the feelings.
Mrs. Obama then proceeds to tell her life story, and how the road to becoming successful by graduating
was tough, but I was worth it every minute. This is a major section appealing to pathos, and it is obviously a
very effective way to communicate, as its Mrs. Obama own story, which is easy to relate to for the
sophomores. What really catches your eye in this section is the fact she keeps repeating how everyone told
her, how she set her goals to high and how she was never going to graduate from Princeton.
7
But she used
the doubters to fuel her effort, t.This example obviously appeals to pathos, as this is how a lot of people
feels in America, growing up in a lower class or middleclass neighbourhood, also seeing as that these
sophomores in particular, isnt in the upper class, but has never the less been successful.
Mrs. Obama finishes her speech by appealing to logos and pathos se tidl, by saying once you have
completed the education; you have the foundation for building a successful life.

Overall, we see Mrs. Obama putting a lot of effort into the speech, trying to convince Americas sophomores
and youth, to take a higher education after High School, and through analysing the speech, you can see she
uses a great amount of logos, pathos and ethos, to appeal to peoples emotions, common sense and the
senders credibility.
