WHO ARE THE BEST PERFORMERS IN BLACK COLLEGE SPORTS
LUT WILLIAMS
BCSP Editor
This week represents the midway point of
the 2014 black college football season and fea-
tures two games between conference division
leaders that could be previews of championship
games slated for later in the season.
Down in Columbus, Ga. Saturday (2 p.m.),
SIAC East Division leader Morehouse (4-1,
3-0) battles West co-leader Tuskegee (3-2, 2-0)
in the 79th edition of the Morehouse-Skeege
Classic. The teams could meet again on Nov. 15
when the East champ and West champ meet in
the SIAC Championship Game in Montgomery,
Alabama.
And in Grambling, La. Saturday (2 p.m.),
new BCSP No. 1 Alcorn State (5-1, 3-0), the
leader of the SWAC East, takes on upstart West
Division leader Grambling State (3-3, 3-0), up
to 7th in the latest BCSP ranking, in what could
be a preview of the Dec. 13 SWAC title game in
Houston.
These are the two games to watch as teams
enter the fnal half of the 2014 season.
Morehouse has three wins against SIAC
teams that are a combined 2-13 (0-5 Paine,
1-4 Central State and 1-4 Clark Atlanta) and
will be facing its frst big test against Tuskegee.
Morehouse head coach Rich Freeman is 1-6 vs.
the Golden Tigers in his seven years at the helm.
Freeman's team is at the top of several SIAC
stats categories through its fve games. The Ma-
roon Tigers are third in scoring offense (26.2
points per game), tops in scoring defense (15.4
ppg.) and in total offense (392.0 yards per game)
and second in total defense (291.2 ypg.).
The Tigers are led on offense by sopho-
more quarterback Monqavious Johnson, who
leads the SIAC in passing yards (218.8 yards per
game) and total offense (239.0 ypg.) The defense
is led by senior defensive back Demario Dixon.
Tuskegee's losses have been to Winston-
Salem State, the 17th-ranked team nationally in
the AFCA Div. II Coaches Poll, and to Alabama
A&M of the SWAC. The Golden Tigers escaped
with a 35-28 win over Fort Valley State a week
ago.
They are led by the quarterbacking duo of
Justin Nared and Kevin Lacey as well as break-
away threat, running back Hoderick Lowe.
Elsewhere in the SIAC, West co-leader Still-
man (3-2, 2-0) plays at Benedict (2-3, 0-2), Fort
Valley State (3-2, 2-1) hosts Kentucky State (2-
3, 1-1), Paine (0-5, 0-3) plays at Limestone in
a non-conference game that counts in the SIAC
standings, and Albany State (2-2, 1-0) hosts
Lane (1-4, 1-2)
Alcorn State is coming off a big 33-7 win
last Thursday night over SWAC East rival Ala-
bama State, a win that has cast the Braves as the
favorite for this year's SWAC title. And with for-
mer BCSP No. 1 North Carolina A&T's 13-0
loss to South Carolina State Saturday at the At-
lanta Classic, head coach Jay Hopson's team is
now at the top of the BCSP Top Ten.
They will be facing a Grambling team that

was picked to fnish at the bottom of the SWAC
West but has won its frst three conference games
under new head coach Broderick Fobbs.
Not only have the G-Men beaten Prai-
rie View A&M, Jackson State and Alabama
A&M during their current three-game winning
streak, but they played then BCSP No. 1 Bet-
hune-Cookman tough before succumbing 36-
23 on Sept. 13, before the win sreak began.
The Grambling/Alcorn State game hearkens
back to an era when legendary coaches Eddie
Robinson of Grambling and Marino Casem
manned the sidlines in a classic rivalry. And both
programs are on the upswing after struggling in
recent years.
Alcorn is getting great play on both offense
and defense, leading the SWAC in total, scoring
and rushing offense and defense. Quarterback
John Gibbs Jr. put up 323 yards of total offense
Thursday while the Braves offense generated
608 total yards, 391 on the ground.
Fobbs is working minor miracles at Gram-
bling, a team that had won one game over the
past two seasons and was particularly in turmoil
last season. Fobbs, who played for Robinson, as
did his dad, veteran coach Lee Fobbs, says he's
trading on the tradition and pride Robinson built.
Back-up quarterback Johnathan Williams
totalled 353 total yards, 291 thru the air, in the
win over Alabama A&M Saturday.
In other SWAC games, Jackson State (3-3,
1-2) has its homecoming Saturday vs. Missis-
sippi Valley State (1-5, 0-4) and Prairie View
A&M (1-4, 1-3) has homecoming vs. Alabama
State (4-2, 3-1). Alabama A&M (2-4, 1-2) is at
home to Southern (3-3, 2-1).
BCSP No. 4 South Carolina State and
Norfolk State are tied atop the MEAC with 2-0
conference records and have home dates Satur-
day.
S. C. State (4-2) is hosting N. C. Central
(2-3, 1-0) while Norfolk State (2-4) has its
homecoming vs. Delaware State (1-5, 1-1).
BCSP No. 2 Bethune-Cookman (4-1, 1-0) also
has homecoming in Daytona Beach vs. Howard
(1-5, 0-3).
On Thursday, BCSP No. 5 North Carolina
A&T (4-2, 1-1) hosts Hampton (1-4, 0-1) in a
game to be carried live on ESPNU at 7:30 p.m.
In the CIAA, Virginia Union and Virginia
State are tied for the North Division lead with
2-0 marks while BCSP No. 3 Winston-Salem
State leads the South at 2-0.
VUU (4-1) hosts Lincoln (1-4, 0-2) in
Richmond, Va. for homecoming while Virginia
State (3-2) hosts division rival Elizabeth City
State (2-3, 1-1). WSSU (4-1) plays on the road
at Johnson C. Smith (1-4, 0-2). Chowan (1-4,
0-2) hosts Bowie State (1-4, 1-1).
