GUIDELINES FOR SUMMER INTERN PROJECT BY MBA STUDENTS OF
CHRIST UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT
SUMMER OF 2012 Students are required to undergo summer interns for a period of 2 months commencing generally from 1 st April immediately after their 3 rd end trimester exams. The objective of the summer interns is to provide an opportunity to the students to get exposed to the or! culture of organi"ations and to simultaneously pursue a management problem # issue$ specific to the area here the student is doing the summer intern. Which com!"# o$ $o%&c' 'o choo(& )o$ SIP* Students are expected to use their net%or!ing and get a suitable project during summer vacation. The company could be of their choice. &hile choosing the company or the project$ the students may !eep in mind the folloing' Their career interest The reputation of the company The quality of the project they are li!ely to underta!e &hile the third point is compulsory$ the first to are not that important if the project is good in terms of the exposure and learning opportunities the project may provide. &e have seen in the past that projects in good reputed companies have not been properly handled by the students and projects in not so reputed companies have been handled by the students exceedingly ell also. So it is in your hands as to ho you ould commit to the project or!. (earn the or! and discipline culture of the organi"ation (earn to relate to the company)s vision (earn to netor! ith the staff (earn about people management (earn to be punctual at the or! place (earn the discipline rules of the company and adhere to the same *n order to ensure that the above learnings happen in a structured ay$ the student should choose a project that ill !eep the student fully engaged ith the company here the summer intern is underta!en. While chosing the topic the student should keep the following broad principles in mind: +ormally hen the prospect company is approached by the student for summer intern$ the company official ould as! the student about his#her area of interest. *n order to anser this question in a proper ay$ the student should do enough ground or! before approaching the company official. ,lease do not say that you ould do hatever they as! you to do. *t ould place you in a poor light and the company official may not be inclined to give you any or!$ as you haven)t done any ground or! before approaching them. The ground or! ould involve$ !noing thoroughly about the company in terms of its operations$ products$ financial numbers$ various areas here project could be done$ branch offices details$ company history$ core strengths of the companies$ its mar!et position$ competitors$ groth history etc etc etc. This ould normally enable the student to create good impression ith the company official and they ould be inclined to give a good project to the student. -urther guidelines in this regard are as follos' The project should be related to the company # area here the summer intern is underta!en. The project should be such that$ in order to do the project$ the student should have requirement for inputs from the company here the summer intern is underta!en. *n other ords$ if the project can be done ithout any inputs from the company$ such projects ould not be acceptable. ,rimary data is not a compulsion. .oever$ if the project is such$ hich needs primary data$ the same can be or!ed upon by the student. The student can or! ith secondary data. The student should read more from all possible sources concerning the area of the project before finali"ing the topic for the project. /efore finali"ing the project topic$ the student should assess the available data inputs from the company here summer intern is being carried out and then decide on the project. The student should also keep in mind the privacy of the data and confidentiality of the analysis which the company may insist, in which case the student should ensure that the project work does not get hampered due to this. +ormally the students encounter the folloing pitfalls hile doing summer interns' The project guide ould be normally busy ith his # her office or! that they ould not have sufficient time to guide you. 0+ormally the project guides ould be free during the end of the day%else find out% and hence the students should try to approach them during this time to get clarifications or to !eep the project guide updated on the progress1 +o data pertaining to the business of the company may be made available to you easily to do your summer interns. 2r no data may be available to provide you for your project. 03ou should be aare of such limitations and constraints even before you start the project and hence should choose such projects here such constraints are not there. *n such cases you can attempt to use publicly available information of the company or such information that ould not normally affect the confidentiality aspect1 The company ould normally expect you to sell their products 0atleast for a part of the time1 instead of alloing you to do full fledged project or! confining to office. 0Sales job should not be considered as menial. *t is very important aspect of the summer intern training$ as many companies ould expect you to do it. /ut$ apart from sales$ you should also ta!e up a project hich ould involve analysis and data compilation. A chapter could be included in the project report about the sales experience$ nature of the product sold$ clients hom you met$ problems encountered etc etc etc. 3ou may not be provided ith sufficient office space to sit and or! on your project comfortably. 0/e flexible enough in the or! place to adjust to this situation1 O'h&$ 3&"&$!- 3+i,&-i"&( )o$ 'h& ('+,&"'(4 The student should observe proper dress code hile on summer interns or hile meeting the customers of the company and representing the company here summer interns is pursued. The student should be punctual for or!. The student should ensure that the routines of the company guide is not disturbed due to the project or! of the student and the student should in fact support the company guide in his # her or! as permitted by the guide. The student shall approach the company guide during the lean hours of the guide for learnings and for project or!. The student should !eep the company guide informed from time to time about the progress of the project and the or! assignment. The student should also !eep the faculty guide informed on a ee!ly basis about the progress of the project and the or! assignment through emails. *t should be ensured that the emails are continuous so that earlier correspondence can be referred at any point of time. The student should alays uphold the values of 4hrist 5niversity *nstitute of 6anagement at or! and ensure at all times that the name of the 5niversity is maintained or enhanced in the eyes of the company here summer intern is carried out. The student can use the following structure while building up the project report of summer intern: a. 7xecutive Summary b. *ntroduction to the topic c. *ndustry ,rofile d. 4ompany ,rofile e. The problem statement f. 2bjectives of the study g. ,roject 8esign and 6ethodology h. 8ata analysis and findings i. (earning outcome from the study and during the period of or! at the company. j. Suggestions from the study !. 9eferences$ /ibliography and Appendices The student should prepare hard copy as follos' 1 for the department$ 1 for the student and 1 for the company if required. Mi"im+m &$io, o) (+mm&$ i"'&$"( $o%&c'4 Students are expected to put in a minimum of 6 5&&7( in summer interns project. *t is possible that you may start the project a ee! later or complete the project a ee! earlier. .oever it should be ensured that the project should be done in the company for a minimum of ? ee!s during the summer vacation and your certificate from the company should attest this fact.
