Early last week, when I went to the mailbox, I received a surprise: a box with my name on it! I hadnt remembered ordering anything, what could it be? It was from University of Chicago Press it had to be books! Was I excited, but I had not or- dered any books. You can imagine the excitement as I opened the box and saw the two titles inside two books I would have ordered, but could not remember actually following through with it. That moment was like receiving a meal in a restaurant in the South, and realizing as it is placed in front of me that grits which I did not or- der have come with the meal! In reality, I had pre-ordered the books weeks ago. When they finally published and shipped, I had forgotten. In the meanwhile, the moment offered a time of reflection for me. Grace comes in moments unexpected. Often like grits on a plate, or an unexpected box in the mail, grace enters our lives and changes the moment. Grace is Gods way of reminding us that God still loves us, and intends to surprise us from time to time by reminding us of that reality. How often have you gone through the motions of the day, not realizing Gods moments of grace, or even realizing Gods presence at all? Those are the moments that we need most to be reminded of God with us, arent they? Those are the moments when God makes the greatest impact on our lives. Recently, a friend of ours in Minnesota had a bad car accident. Another vehicle t-boned her car at 50 miles per hour she never saw the other car coming; she only felt the extreme jolt, the tighten- ing of the seat belts, and a forward lurching as her car was pushed along the road. To our friends surprise, the OnStar immediately activated, and the woman on the speaker asked if Karen had been in an accident. Within minutes, police and ambulance were at the scene our friend was tak- en to the hospital and taken care of. In that moment, who even thinks of having an OnStar system in their car? I would venture to guess that most rational thinking gives way to fear and dread in such moments. Yet, in the silence, Karen heard a voice, Are you OK? Was there an accident? another moment of surprise. How has God surprised you? How did you react to the surprise? When God surprises you, is it a happy moment, or a sad one? What do you think? Peace, Pr Tim

Modern day slavery is on the rise in our nation and Ohio is one of the most prevalent states when it comes to incidents of human trafficking. We see thousands of men, women, and children being forced into slavery through the labor and sex industries. In an effort to battle this right here in northwest Ohio, the Human Trafficking Protection Project was developed within Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc. The project works to provide legal assistance, as well as collaboration to meet the physical and emotional needs of victims. This effort requires participation from many people in the area to offer a holistic path to recovery. We need your help to meet these survivor needs. Our most pressing need at this time is in the form of $25 gift cards. Both grocery/super-center and gas cards are needed as we help these survivors with basic essentials, transportation and housing. If you would like to help, gift cards can be dropped off at the LAWO office at 118 Clinton Street, Suite 101 Defiance, OH 43512 . There is a mail slot in the front door for after hours donations. Please place in an envelope with attention to HTPP. If you need to arrange an alternate dona- tion drop or have any questions, please email Kelly King at kellmking@yahoo.com.

Library news
Right now most of the books in the library have been donated. Here are a few that might be of in- terest:
Laugh Your Way to Grace by Rev. Susan Sparks. Rev. Sparks is an ex-lawyer turned comedi- an and Baptist minister. This is a book about how humor and laughter have everything to do with God. Laughter can help you: find perspective when faced with adversity, heal-emotionally, physi- cally and spiritually, keep your faith when God is silent, live with elegance, beauty and generosity of spirit.
Snake Oil by Rev. Becca Stevens. Rev. Stevens is an Episcopal priest at Vanderbilt University. She is also the founder of Thistle Farms and Magdalene. These two social enterprises work hand in hand serving women who have survived prostitution, trafficking, and addiction. Rev Stevens calls herself a snake oil seller. She infuses natural oils with powerful stories and believes they help heal the world.
Mighty Be Our Powers by Leymah Gbowee. In a time of death and terror, Leymah Gbowee brought Liberias women togetherand together, they led a nation to peace. This is a gripping chronicle of a journey from hopelessness to empowerment that will touch all who dream of a better world. Ms. Gbowee is also a noble peace prize winner.
Wounded Trapped and Voiceless by Emily Greta. Imagine being trapped in your own body! This is a true story of Phyllis Klenk and her battle to prove she is alive. Unable to move or com- municate this book draws you into her incredible journey from walking with God to a triumphant emergence from coma to life.
We also have several books of fiction by authors such as: Janet Hitchcock, Wanda Brunstettler, Dale Cramer, Beverly Lewis, Janette Oke, and Tracie Peterson to name a few.
We would like to enhance the library with some new releases. What type of books are you inter- ested in reading? We welcome your input (you can leave the information in the church office).

Dear Zion friends,
Thank you for the many prayers during Steves illness and words of condolence, cards and fowers since his passing. Your thoughtulness has helped relieve some of our sadness. Gods peace. Chuck and Leona Bailey ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I want to thank you all for your prayers during these past 11 months for my son Noah Garcia. Noah was born October 8, 2013, at St. Vincent's in Toledo with a rare and severe form of dwarfsm called Hypochondrogenesis. Hypochondrogenesis is on the spectrum of what is called a Collagen II mutaton. Noah's mutaton is considered a dominate mutaton and most likely occurred at concepton. Totally random and nothing could have been done to prevent it. Noah's dwarfsm has caused a small ribcage which resulted in small lungs. He also has a foppy airway as a result of his collagen mutaton so he is prone to "blue spells". Afer 4 months in the NICU at Natonwide Children's in Columbus (where he transferred at 2 weeks old) it was discovered Noah was refuxing and aspiratng his milk, further complicatng his respiratory status. Today Noah has a tracheostomy, is fed through a J Tube (into the intestnes), and is ventlator dependent. Noah, howev- er, was able to come home on July 1, 2014 afer nearly 9 months in the NICU. He has been thriving since coming home. He has begun to roll over, is interactve, reaching and problem solving. Noah is tastng baby food by mouth. He also loves playing and interactng with his big brothers Miguel and Alex. Noah stll has a long way to go. We have been advised Noah may require his trach untl he is 5 or 6 years old. He may not walk untl he is 3 or 4 because of his dwarfsm. That said, Noah may have physical limitatons but he proves every day he is normal in every other way. If you are able, please contnue to keep Noah in your prayers. Cold and fu season are upon us, which can be very tough on these kiddos with trachs and ventlators. Our family was separated for so long while Noah was in the NICU, we hope to keep hospital visits going forward to a minimum. We can never repay you for all your prayers but you all will always be in ours.
The Garcia Family, Inocencio, Alison, Miguel, Alex and Noah. PAGE 6 Continued on next page DEACON SUPPORT TEAM
All members should be aware of their deacon and hopefully have met him or her to discuss any con- cerns or questions you may have had. Your deacons have a sincere interest in serving your needs and encourage you to bring your needs to the attention of Pastor, the deacon group or council which- ever is appropriate. In turn, we trust you have an equally sincere interest in getting to know your dea- con as a present and future friend and confidant. We also want to emphasize the importance of speaking with Pastor whenever the need arises. He wants to know your concerns to help provide a solution or answers to your questions. He remains the best resource within our congregation to share wisdom and knowledge. Deacons are not exempt from having a deacon of their own. At times we need someone willing to lis- ten and we turn to our deacon. In our bi-monthly meetings, the nine deacons discuss a variety of top- ics concerning the spiritual welfare of the congregation. Most importantly we are available for you when your needs might require someone to talk with other than Pastor Tim. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the members of Zions Lutheran Church and we encourage you to reach out to your deacon whenever the need arises. Please call the church office for any assis- tance. Dick Anderson
Please remember to call the church office when: 1. You will be or have already moved. 2. You have an addition to your family. 3. You have an address update and/or cor- rection, or birthday correction. 4. New email address and/or phone num- ber. THANK YOU! PAGE 7 Lois Finkenbiner The Laurels of Defiance Rm 308 1701 S.
