The BCS is delighted to promote member Susan Maces exciting production of Shakespeares Timon of Athens,
which opened at the Teatro Maison de France last weekend. We carried an in-depth interview with Susan in
Octobers edition of The Umbrella, and the production was splashed all over O Globo, too. Its quite the happening in
the busy world of Rio theatre. Make sure you are part of the scene, as tickets are in hot demand.
Londons Evening Standard called the adaptation by the National Theatres Nick Hytner and Ben Power a lacerating
parable of our times. Its a powerful riches-to-rags story, in which the title character personifies the foolishness of
ill-judged extremes. He moves from compulsive and foolish generosity to bitter disappointment. As Susan explains:
The fact that it is set in the contemporary world whilst maintaining its Shakespearean text, cut and re-arranged but
otherwise intact, provides a special flavour to the production.
Partly sponsored under the cultural incentive Lei Rouanet by Eletrobras and IRB, 20 actors play 27 parts. Bruce
Gomlevsky directs. Topping the bill is the immensely powerful Vera Holtz playing Timon, in a daring, modern
gender blind mode. Another key figure in the production is Barbara Heliodora, foremost translator of Shakespeare
into Portuguese, who has coached the cast in the ways of the word.
Break a leg! is what we say to Susan Mace, long-standing BCS member and supporter, and to her company,
Cultural Embassy Brasil. Never one to follow a script, Susan actually broke her arm in the lead-up.
This is the first National Theatres production on these carioca shores. In our money-minded world, wed have to add
that Shakespeare is one of Britains most enduring and penetrating exports. Can YOU think of a better way to say
Feliz Aniversrio to our very own Bard? He may be 450 years old, but hes getting younger all the time.

Improbable Comedy invites BCS Members for Stand Up Comedy in English shows twice a month in Botafogo. Itll
offer stage time to professional comics (expat and Brazilian) who do material in English and give a newcomer a
chance to try it
("open mic"). Improbable Comedy has a similar show in So Paulo as well. Both shows are still very grass roots,
relaxed, fun and in English.

Would you like to come check out the show? The next one is Tuesday October 21 at LimeTime Hostel in Botafogo
(Rua Dezenove de Fevereiro, 52). The entrance is a quite inexpensive- just R$15 which includes a first caipirinha.

Please let we know if you have any questions. It would be great to have folks from BCS there - We think you'd really
love it!
