From the
The end of the semester is always stressful, with exams and final
papers and projects all coming due at the same time. With that in
mind, I thought I'd share with you some advice I've often taken
myself in such circumstances:
No matter how much you have to do, find one hour--or even 20 or
30 minutes--for yourself, to do something relaxing and
fun. Schedule your "me time" in advance, and commit to it just as
if it were a class or another obligation. Take a walk or a run, or hit a
tennis ball. Watch a football game or a TV show. Read a book. Get a
cup of coffee or have a sit-down meal with a friend. Just find something that's positive and healthy, and make the rest of your
(stressful) life work around it.
It might sound paradoxical to add something else to do during a
very busy time, but it's amazing how a few minutes of R&R can energize you and give you a feeling that, yes, you can do everything
that's due today, tomorrow, and in the coming weeks.
Of course, if you're feeling truly overwhelmed, talk to someone immediately--our Honors adviser, Leah Boyd, or another member of
the Honors faculty and staff; a professor or adviser; or a counselor
at CAPS. And, of course, if I can help in any way, just let me know.
Since we won't have a newsletter next week, let me take the opportunity now to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving! If you're
traveling, be safe. Dr. Lasser
