PNOYs Fifth State of the Nation Address
Ito po ang aking ikalimang SONA, isa na lamang ang natitira. May kasabihan po
tayo: Ang hindi lumingon sa pinanggalingan, hindi makararating sa paroroonan. Kaya
marapat lang po siguro tayong magbalik-tanaw SONA highlights the accomplishments of
the government under the current presidents administration on its various sectors and
these were the first words that PNOY uttered which was a clear indication of another
boastful speech of achievements that we Filipinos have hardly felt.
Hindi po madali ang trabahong ito, at tao lang po ako, na kung minsan,
nagkakaroon din ng agam-agam. With this statement in the very beginning of his speech, I
got irritated. PNOY is but just a man and everyone is, but the President is elected, is chosen
out of trust and expectations that he will do the very best he can to serve its citizens and the
limitations of a man is no excuse for a satisfactory service to the nation. This made the
viewing of his fifth SONA uninteresting to me. But still I proceeded to listen to an hour and a
half long speech expecting to hear not just boastful statements but achievements which
were actually felt.
The controversial Disbursement Acceleration Program contributed 1.6 billion pesos
to TESDAs Training for Work Scholarship Program which enabled the graduation of
223,615 beneficiaries with 66 percent of these already employed and according to the
National Economic Development Authority, 2.5 million Filipinos have crossed the poverty
line. Aquinos use of testimonials to prove the validity of what he accomplished just like in
the Disbursement Acceleration Program, the TESDA program, on our Police Force, and the
bosses is what I liked about his SONA. One more thing that Aquino said which I agreed is
that if our Bosses choose the right leaders, succeeding administrations will be able to
surpass what we have done because our administration has greatly reduced the number of
problems remaining, giving them a stronger foundation from which to begin. Although I still
question what have actually been done. Then PNoy highlighted the lifting of airline bans of
ICAO and EU and then followed by the United States Federal Aviation Administration which
indicated increase in flights of our local airlines to the United States and participating
countries in the EU. This really is a big help to both tourism and business but for me it also
paves the way of more Filipinos going out of the country to find jobs which they cannot find

in our country. The advancement of technology is also impressive since our country is
prone to floods and typhoons.
Other than all of the boastful statements coming out of our presidents mouth, the
thorough repetition of the phrase through good governance annoys me the most. Good
governance is declared by the served and not the servant. His approach is more on
storytelling of his self-achievements and he appears to be defensive regarding the issues
on DAP. He also has constantly blamed the LGUs just like his past SONA where he blamed
the past administration. What disappointed me during his talk on the security of our country
where he stated that our forces have now been modernized with new equipment is the fact
that they cannot even demonstrate mere efforts to show resistance against China on the
seizing of our properties even though inside resistance are being eradicated. The
Philippines internally is getting more secure but externally is weak. Also on his discussion of
fighting the Filipino hoarders with a showdown is unsatisfactory. He should help them by
not fighting them but showing them what is better to do.
The bottom line is all of what he said is not being felt by us ordinary people and his
SONA is but just a speech of bragging and boasts.
