BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS

OF THE LEHIGH VALLEY
2013 - 2014
Dear Agency Supporters,
With our new fiscal year just several months underway,
wed like to take this opportunity to thank you for your
unparalleled support of Big Brothers Big Sisters Lehigh
Valley. Were excited to not only look forward to this
year, but also glance back at our achievements from
2013-2014.
This annual report gives us a chance to thank you
by taking a head-on look at the impact mentoring
has had on innumerable lives. We really want you
to understand how each dollar contributed makes
a tangible difference. Its also our goal to show you
stories of real people who take it upon themselves to
step up as mentors and guide their Little Brothers and
Little Sisters towards successful, fulfilling futures.
We have both been involved with Big Brothers Big
Sisters for many years, in many capacities, and in that
time, weve met many Bigs and Littles whove felt the
positive power of mentoring. Most of the time, our

matches dont do anything extravagantthey spend

a couple of hours per week getting pizza, playing
games, shooting hoops, going to sporting events and
simply learning how their life experiences fit together.
Still, these experiences, bit by bit, really work, and it
takes a ton of great people to help create this impact.
Without the amazing commitment of our volunteer
Bigs, our many corporate and individual donors,
officials at our partnering schools and of course, our
dedicated staff and board of directors, our story as an
organization would remain unwritten.
In the past fiscal year, we proudly served a record 327
children in mentoring relationships throughout Lehigh
and Northampton Counties. Now, we share their
storiesand ours as a growing organization devoted
to bettering our community each and every day. We
hope youll continue to work with us as we push to
serve even more children in a life-changing way.
Sincerely,
Mark Katkovcin
Board Chair

My Little Best Friend

Sydney and Ema are making
their time together count.

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF THE LEHIGH VALLEY

Its been smooth sailing so far

for Big Sister Sydney and her
Little Sister Ema. While they
were matched only a year ago,
theyve already accomplished
a ton.
We usually hang out after
school for a couple of hours each
week, Sydney begins. We use
the time to do simple things
we cook dinner together, bake
cookies and usually work on
Emas government, science or
math homework.
We like to use our match
meetings to make learning a
bit more fun, Sydney added.
Recently, we went to the diner
to eat and used items on the
table, like sugar packets, to do
addition and division.
And for Ema, the time shes
spent with Sydney studying
and having fun is paying dividends in the classroom. I just
got an A on my test about
the scientific method, Ema
bragged. And I got an 85% on

my government test.
Ema also gets really excited
about a time when her and
Sydney did something special
togetherthey gave back to the
community by volunteering at
an event called Mikaylas Voice
last summer.
Together, Sydney and Ema both

volunteered at the event and
completed the organizations
Triathlon for Inclusion, which
is an all-inclusive event where
kids of all abilities have the
opportunity
to
compete
side-by-side and together in
something they had likely not
dreamed possible.

At just 24 years old, Sydney

understands the value of giving back in the community not
only as a Big Sister, but as a
volunteer for other organizations, like Mikaylas voice. And
its great to see her passing
these all-important values on to
her Little Sister Ema.
Melissa, Emas mother, is also
very involved with the program.
She says that shes very grateful
for the program and what its
done for her daughter.
Ema is always so eager to
be around Sydney, even if
its just a trip to the park,
attending a birthday party
or reviewing school work or
studying, she noted. As a
single parent who works fulltime and is a student, I often
dont have the opportunity to
do these things with her. Its
also provided her with an
opportunity to explore what
it means to give back to the
community.

ANNUAL REPORT

Woodrow, like many of our Bigs,

is adamant that he and his Little
Brother simply enjoy spending
time together, no matter what
theyre doing.
We dont do anything crazy,
Woodrow laughs when asked
about the activities the two
enjoy together. A lot of times
we just hang out and talk.
We both like singing, and enjoy
music. And we really like
watching movies together.
Humble as he is about his
influence on Davids life,
Woodrow also says the two used
to work on homework together
during their weekly match
meetings. However, in the past
several months, Woodrow notes
that he no longer needs to help
David with his studies.

Im doing it all on my own

now, Little Brother David adds.
He really helped me out with
getting better grades.

his self-confidence because I

was in his shoes before, and I try
to understand what hes going
through.

We get to spend more

time watching movies now,
Woodrow adds. Hes worked
really hard and gotten to the
point where hes totally on
his own with homework and
academics now.

In fact, David is quite the

talent: he currently sings, and
plays trumpet and flute, and
is learning piano. Pursuing his
passion for music at such a
young age, he says, wouldve
been more challenging if
Woodrow werent there to
guide and inspire him.

Though both spend just an hour

a week together, the bond
Woodrow and David have
created over the past two years
runs deep. Notably, Woodrow
has also helped his Little Brother
become more self-confident
and outgoing.
We have a pretty special
bond, Woodrow says. David
is in speech therapy, and I was
as well when I was his age. Im
really able to help him out with

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF THE LEHIGH VALLEY

I really look up to Woodrow as

a role model, and thats what
I wanted when I first got a Big
Brother, David says.

I really
look up to
Woodrow as a
role model.

Woodrow received the High School Big Brother

of the Year award in April. After hearing about how hes
helped his Little Brother David, its easy to understand why.

Im Listening

Former Big Brother Scotty and his Little Brother Armand have shared
a ton of memoriesand theyre still making some new ones.

Reconnecting With Alumni

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF THE LEHIGH VALLEY

Scotty,

a DJ on Lehigh Valley
radio station 107 The Bone,
remembers his time as a Big
Brother really fondlyeven if
he cant remember exactly
why he got involved. However,
his decision to be a mentor to
his former Little Brother Armand
was one that was life-changing
for both men.
I dont know exactly why I got
involved [with Big Brothers Big
Sisters], but I had a ton of free
time, and I wanted to do something productive, Scotty said.
I ran into a representative from
the organization at a live radio
broadcast I was hosting, and I
thought it seemed right up my
alley.
Scotty was new to the Lehigh
Valley when he went online to
apply to be a Big Brother. As he
remembers it, the process was
simple as possible, and he was
matched with his Little Brother
Armand quickly. It happened
really fast, Scotty said. At that
point, I didnt know what to
expect!
Th o u gh
A r m a nd
wa s
relatively
reserved,
he
found a perfect match
in his Big Brother, who
describes
himself
as
a
complete extrovert. The

two spent their initial meetings

getting to know one another,
grabbing dinner and just
conversing.
We both had somewhat busy
schedules, so lots of times wed
just go out, get pizza, play video
games or talk about school,
Scotty said. I wanted to lend
a listening ear. We shared a
lot of the same interests, we
were both really into sports and

martial arts, and it just clicked.
Yet, the longer they were
matched, and the more
adventures both shared
Scotty took Armand to his
first concert, the pair went
whitewater rafting and they
visited a ton of Pennsylvanias
major landmarksthe more
Armand started confiding in
Scotty.
As we grew closer, he would
call me to discuss his day to day
issues, Scotty said. He was
going through typical stuff
growing up, and I helped him
out. For instance, I taught him
how to shave. When he got
older, hed give me a call and
ask for career and college

advice. I always told him to

do exactly what he wanted to
do, and to make sure to find
something he was passionate
about.
Scotty and Armand were
matched for seven years, and
the time together allowed both
of them to play integral roles
in each others lives. Armand
had Scotty to his middle school
and high school graduation
ceremonies, and, most notably,
gave his Big Brother a father
pin when he earned his Eagle
Scout badge.
Now a sophomore at the
University of Scranton studying
nursing, Armand still keeps
in touch with his Big Brother.
And Scotty says hes still made
himself available to chat
anytime his former Little Brother
needs someone to listen.
Even as our matched closed,
we stayed really close, Scotty
noted. From day one, he
definitely had his head on
straight, but I wanted to make
sure I was always there to talk
if he had anything on his mind.
We still see each other every
two weeks to catch up. The
match turned out perfectly.

For over 40 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters Lehigh Valley has operated under the belief that
inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. Most children served by Big
Brothers Big Sisters are in single-parent, low-income families or households where a parent
is incarcerated. As the nations largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network,
Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between qualified, trained
mentors (Bigs) and children (Littles).
Big Brothers Big Sisters provides a system of ongoing evaluation and support which
is proven by independent studies to help families by improving the odds that Littles
will perform better in school, avoid violence and illegal activities, and have stronger
relationships with their parents and others. Learn how you can positively impact a childs
