protests. The people of Iran have turned to an

cation, both inside and outside the country.
Twitter is a recent addition to the
web that did not gain social recognition until
recently, and is now the center of more atten-
tion due to the Iranian protestors using the site
to relay information to the rest of the world.
Through Twitter, anyone with access to the
internet can track the latest developments in
Iran; it is easy to use, and hard for the govern-
ment to control. Although the news in unveri-

news, and allows the Iranian protest move-
ment to retain individual anonymity as the
situation in Iran remains chaotic.

Why are holidays just another
excuse for people to buy cheap plastic
crap? For nearly every holiday, from
Easter to Halloween the advertisements
begin weeks in advance, showing us all of
the great things that we can buy to aug-
ment the enjoyment of the company of our
loved ones. These holidays have been
dressed up to be made more profitable,
and in turn, this has somewhat deadened
the true meaning of the holidays.
Call me no Scrooge, I love the Christ-
mas lights too. We don’t want Santa to
miss our roofs while bringing us stuff,
after all, and I love the candy that is
brought by a giant, egg-laying white rab-
bit to celebrate the rising of the Christ.
I just believe that there should be a
greater amount of attention paid to the
true spirit of these holidays, rather than
the rampant want to receive cheaply made
plastic goods. Yes, it can be very nice to
get those things that you want on these
holidays. I admit getting gifts is not too
bad, however, seeing your loved ones as
well as your family can also be a gift in its
own right.
In fact, some of these holidays seem to
be designed to sell greeting cards exclu-
sively. Take mother’s day and father’s
day, I don’t mean to be disparaging to-
wards appreciating your parents. In fact,
why don’t you wish them a happy day at
the soonest possible moment! In fact,
make them a card rather than going out
and buying some ironic bit of cardstock at
some store. Chances are they will appreci-
ate something that you created yourself
more than you buying someone else’s
idea.

than strength. These three principles are the
basis of Wing Chun, but because of the arts’
simplicity, it can be expanded when needed.
A hallmark of Wing Chun is the vertical
first, instead of the horazantal first of other
combative arts.
When comparing Wing Chun to
other combative arts, it is
important to note that
these arts operate in three
ranges. Long range is
where most kicking arts
operate from, around four
feet from the opponent
depending on height. Mid
range is where boxers
and most puncher like to
sit, two feet away de-
pending on arm length. Close range is be-
tween 8 and 10 inches or within elbow
range. Wing Chun is primarily a close range
art, as even the kicks are designed to be used
within a foot. Therefore, many techniques
that are taught are most often covering ma-
neuvers that allow the fighter to close the
distance so that the more powerful
‘battering’ attacks can be launched.
Weapons are common fixtures of
most martial arts, and as with everything in
Wing Chun, the weapons are simple. Al-
though the principles can be applied to other
weapons, there are two that are specific to
Wing Chun. First are butterfly knives, not
the ones known for their twirling blades.
These “Wing Chung knives” are essentially
short swords that are approximately a foot
long and a hand span wide. Another promi-
nent weapon in Wing Chun is the dragon
pole. They between 9 and 13 feet long mak-
ing them very difficult to use. It has six (and
a bit) traditional movements, lending to its

Wing Chun is in my opinion the
best modern martial art for many reasons,
one of which is that it was designed to
counter attacks from a wide array of oppo-
nents. Wing Chun was designed by street
fighters in Hong Kong to counter both the

flowery movements of Chinese arts and
the tight aggressiveness of western box-
ing. In addition, Wing Chun has the ca-
pacity to incorporate other martial arts
into itself, making it the foundation of
Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do.

Rising Star

And almost everyone recognizes the name
Paul McCartney, a leading member of the
renowned music group who currently
lives in London and still gets tons of pub-
licity. He has three daughters: Heather,
Mary, and

clothing de-
signer) Stella.
He also has a
son, James, who
by choice de-
cided to have a
low-key life-
style and keep
mostly to him-
self. But it
seems that fi-
nally, at thirty
two years of
age, James Louis McCartney is ready to
step out into the limelight.
James graduated from Bexhill
College, near his home in East Sussex,
England. He has been playing the guitar
since the age of six, and just recently Paul
stated that he was helping James work on
his debut solo album. No one had every
heard any of his music until his unveiling

Over the Thanksgiving
holidays I was in the tiny town of
Fairfield (population approximately
11,000), and heard about the excit-
ing show. My host was fortunate
enough to attend the show and got to
take pictures arm in arm with Mr.
James himself. Rumors flew around
that James was still in town almost a
month after performing, merely be-
cause he liked the quaint atmos-
phere.
While spending an evening
on the town, we stumbled across
James, and he in fact recognized my
friend who had been at the concert.
He informed us that he would be
doing one last concert before leav-
ing; it would be small scale, free of
charge, and exclusively invite-only.
So the next day, on Satur-
day December 5th, we went to the
town’s hip hangout and venue, Café
Paradiso. The audience consisted of
less than a hundred people, in con-
trast to the four hundred plus audi-
ence at the Convention Center a few
weeks before.
James looks exactly like
Paul, only completely bald. I could
tell he was unfamiliar with the stage,
but his skills were stupendous. He
sang about ten songs on three differ-
ent guitars, as well as the piano. His
voice rang clear throughout the
room, even and controlled much like
his fathers. However, I could almost
sense a bit of John Lennon’s vocal
style whenever he roughed things up
a bit.
He was very introverted
throughout the entire show, mum-
bling the name of each song during
applause, making each title inaudi-
ble. He said literally nothing else
besides the names of the songs and
was uncomfortable making eye con-
tact with the audience. Everyone
appreciated him just the same, and
he blew me out of the water with his
lyrics, guitar skills, and singing.

“I actually love cooking. Cook-
ing’s really fun,” said Phil, when asked
if his success with cheesecake translated

ten-inch cheesecakes were reasonably
priced. “They take about three hours of

from the Cheesecake Factory would cost
around fifty dollars, no small price tag,
while his are priced at around thirty.
Thirty dollars for a delicious, personal-
ized dessert is worth it, says junior Kel-
sey Gaillot, “It was amazing. My family
ate a whole one in two days, and we’re
ordering more for the holidays.” The

decide to leave and come back to Waldorf
after just a few weeks?
Evan Tolley- Because

dorf to much.

for Kent Denver. How
did you end up playing
there?
E.T.- I did one on one sessions with the
Kent coach. He liked me as a player and
recruited me.
H.C.- Do you like playing hockey for

E.T.- Yes, but I don’t like morning prac-

H.C.- Do you like your teammates?
E.T.- Mostly. Some of them are to “Kent”
for me.

I think K is the perfect example
of why exchanges are so good for stu-
dents. They provide a broadening experi-
ence for the students who travel, and for
the students who receive them. Whether
they stay for a short while or for their
entire high school careers, foreign stu-
dents are a crucial part of Waldorf culture
and leave deep and lasting impression on
us all.
