Who is a Wise Man? (Part 1 of 2)
Given the choice, surely everyone
would rather be wise than foolish.
Paul urges Christians in Ephesus,
“Therefore be careful how you
walk, not as unwise men but as
wise” (5:15). But the Bible speaks
to two types of wisdom: wisdom
of the world and wisdom of God.
Which should we seek? The
apostle makes clear the answer:
“For since, in the wisdom of God,
the world through wisdom did not
know God, it pleased God
through the foolishness of the
message preached to save those
who believe” (1 Cor. 1:21). So,
wisdom that saves does not come
from the world, but from the mes-
sage of God through the avenue
of preaching. The Bible has a lot

“Who is a wise man?” and let
the Bible answer.
(2) A Wise Man Prays to God.

Solomon wrote, “The fear of
the Lord is the beginning of
wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10).
When we live with a con-
scious awareness of God, we
will want to honor Him in
every decision we make. As
we are mindful that His glory
and honor are to be reflected
in the way we live before non

choices we face each day will
be greatly simplified. We will
ask, “Will this exalt God if I

do it or not?” A wise man has a
constant awareness of the pres-
ence of God in his life and lives
for Him.
James wrote, “But if any of you
lack wisdom, let him ask of God
who gives to all generously and
without reproach, and it will be
given to him” (1:5). We should
talk to God about the decisions
we face—the business deals, per-
sonal relationships and daily
struggles. God has promised to
grant us the wisdom we need.
We may want to ask, “Lord,
what are you trying to teach me
in the circumstances of life?”
