Remember the Gloom
Allen Coulter is known for three different movies, The Sopranos, Hollywoodland, and
Remember Me. One of his recent movies, Remember Me, came out in 2010, capturing a dramatic
romance between two characters, Tyler and Ally. In this movie, it causes the audience to have a
rollercoaster of emotions going from sadness to anger to happiness and back to sadness again.
Tyler, a rebellious son and protective brother, meets Ally, a live life to the fullest type of gal.
Together they try to heal their wounds from their past, while Tyler knows the incredible
relationship he has created with Ally will soon end once she learns the truth about him and his
motives. By the end of the movie, the audience is left with sadness as the movie ends tragically
with a real life event. Although Jeff Beck and Amy Biancolli both agree that Remember Me
offers a gloom tone, they differ in their opinion of the film and their approach to summarize the
plot.
Both Jeff Beck and Amy Biancolli define Remember Me as a gloom tone type of movie.
Due to tragic events that occurred in the movie, the death of relatives and a no good for nothing
but work type of father, one would agree with their opinion. Despite the few happy moments in
the movie, it continues to have the gloom feel to it, Beck states that the gloom and doom feel is
inescapable from scene to scene, always present, never lifting, even in the most joyous of
moments. Moreover, Biancolli describes the movie as an exercise in world-class doom, and
even calls that effect suffocating. Both critics suggest that those who plan on watching the film

to approach the movie with caution, especially by those who want to see the movie because of
the actor, Robert Pattinson, due to its doom and gloom tone.
Beck and Biancolli have different opinions of the film, one sees it as not recommendable
and the other defines it as a good film. Beck agrees that the film does incorporate good
performances from the cast but due to its tone, there is hardly room for development causing the
film to be far from recommendable. The exploitative ending as Beck describes it, is what
makes him dislike the movie even more as he states, it turns Remember Me into a film that will
fade from memory pretty quickly. Meanwhile, Biancolli sticks her neck out and states that
Remember Me is not a bad film, but a good one. The way the director portrayed the characters
looking for hope throughout the film is one of the reasons why Biancolli liked it.
The approach Beck and Biancolli take to summarize Remember Me is completely
different from one another. While Beck includes much detail, Biancolli just does an overview of
the movie. Beck gives a lot of detail on the first half of the movie, he includes Allys mother
getting murdered, little details of Tylers life like his job, college and housing. He ends
summarizing the movie where Tyler introduces Ally to his family, then starts talking about
Robert Pattinson who plays Tyler. He continues on how the tone of the movie leaves little room
for the characters to develop and criticizes the ending of the film as there is no natural reason as
to why the film had to end like that. On the other hand, Biancolli starts off by talking about
Robert Pattinson and continues on to call the film a good one. She summaries the whole movie
by including that it is a film about two deeply wounded characters who fall in love. Along with
that she gives a few details about the main events that occurred like the death of Allys mother
and Tylers brother, the street brawl and Tylers roommate scummy idea. The review
continues with Biancolli obsessing over Pattinson and how he smiles and gets few funny lines in

the film. Furthermore she explains the movies climax to be painful and compares it to being
like a hard punch to the kidneys from a very large man.
Above all, while Jeff Beck and Amy Biancolli have different opinions of the film and
wrote their reviews completely different, they both agree and warn their readers of the gloom
tone incorporated in Remember Me. Beck had a disliking towards the movie and spoiled the first
half of the movie while Biancolli actually liked it and gave an overview of the movie. Besides
their differences both critics included the reason as to why many, including them, went to watch
the film, Robert Pattinson and his role as the gloomy Tyler.
