LIVINGROOM

DAYTIME

ELDON LIVERMORE (30) is lying face-down on the settee. He is

fast asleep and his slow, steady breathing is the only
discernible sound in the room. Whilst still in his rumpled
suit from yesterday night, his hand trains in desperate need
to find a half empty bottle of scotch and takes a rather large
swig. After a few seconds the silence is broken by the
piercing sound of his mobile phone ringing. He stirs, and
blinks against the blinding light of the screen. He registers
the name CHARLOTTE and sighs dejectedly.

VOICEMAIL
You have 14 voice messages. Message 1:
CHARLOTTE

ELDON what time are you getting here? You were supposed to be
here at 7 and its nearly 9 now! Your daughter is about to go
to bed and shes asking for you. What the hell are you Voice-over with

CHARLOTTE

Its me again, where are you? Its 9.23pm now. I cant believe
you! Selfish to the core. You -

CHARLOTTE

CHARLOTTE

So youve ignored my call again. Surprise, surprise. I wish

you would grow up. Your life does not just stop at work, you
have a daughter and she needs her father, you need to talk to
someone because I cant deal with this anymore. Sort yourself
out Eldon. For your daughters sake if not your own.

ELDON presses end call and stares miserably at the now blank
screen. His hand automatically reaches for the bottle of
scotch but as he goes to pour another glass he stops himself
and places the bottle on the coffee table in front of him with
deliberate effort. After a few seconds he shakes himself out
of his reverie and looks at his watch. He jumps up, cursing
and rushed out of the door.

INT. TUBE DAYTIME

ELDON stands on the tube carriage. He gingerly manoeuvres his
phone out of his bag. The train pulls in to the next station
and he pushes his way off the carriage and exits the tube.

INT. CORRIDOR DAYTIME

ELDON walks down the corridor and sees a student JAMES exiting
the staff bathroom. He stops him.

ELDON
James! What are you doing in there? This is the staff toilets.

JAMES shrugs his shoulders and smirks.

ELDON
James, wait right outside.

Closeup

ELDON comes back out and JAMES is gone. He looks around

angrily then continues his walk down the corridor. He gets to
his classroom, looks through the glass and leans back against
the wall as if steeling himself to enter. A teacher emerges
from the classroom.

Mr Livermore (she lowers her voice) Eldon, are you ok?

ELDON
Yes, thanks for starting the class for me Liz. Anyway, how are
they?
MS FENN
No, they were fine. Look Eldon, if you ever need to speak to
anyone I am here. I hope you dont mind me saying it but you
look a mess. Werent you wearing that suit yesterday? Sorry
its probably none of my business. Its just that some of the
staff are starting to talk and, well, Im worried about you,
thats all.

MS FENN smiles at ELDON reassuringly and walks away down the

corridor. ELDON watches her, a frown of annoyance on his face
at her well-meaning but patronising comments.

INT. CLASSROOM DAYTIME

ELDON LIVERMORE is at his computer, sorting through his

emails. His finger taps away at the delete button. There is
another knock on the door. Eldon looks up.

INT. CORRIDOR DAYTIME

ELDON turns the corner. Standing four feet from him is JAMES.
JAMES smirks, avoiding his gaze.

ELDON
James, did you just knock on my door?
JAMES
When sir?
ELDON
Just now. Twice in fact.
JAMES
No sir, not twice.
ELDON

Fine. By the way James, didnt I ask you to wait for me this
morning?
JAMES
(Smiling and feigning innocence) Didnt hear you sir.
ELDON
Well now you have. Come and see me after school for a
detention.
JAMES
What?! For what?
ELDON
Just be there at 3.30pm.

ELDON turns around and heads back to his classroom.

JAMES

Over the

(Still in earshot)But I didnt even do anything, prick.

ELDON turns and walks back towards JAMES.

ELDON looks at JAMES and he stares back at him. The bell

rings. ELDON turns walks off in the direction of his
classroom.
INT. ELDONS CLASSROOM DAYTIME
ELDON begins his lesson by taking the register

JAMES
Its MONDA sir, the U is silent

ELDON looks up at JAMES and the class goes quiet. ELDON

continues taking the register.
ELDON
I want silence for the rest of the lesson. Turn to page
19 and read it. After, I would like you to make notes.

JAMES begins to walk out of the classroom without looking at

ELDON.

James, where do you think you are going?

JAMES
(Without turning) Toilet.

Over the

ELDON
James, come back here. You dont just get up and walk out.

JAMES turns and walks back towards him.

JAMES
But I have to go, youre not going to stop

me.

ELDON
I think youll find I can. Are you chewing as well?

JAMES
No sir, thats against the rules.

ELDON
I just saw gum in your mouth.

JAMES

Its a cough sweet. Im not well. Why are you picking on me

sir?

ELDON
What?

JAMES
Youre bullying me. First you put me in detention when I
didnt do anything, then you stop me from going to the toilet
when Im bursting even though you left us unattended so I
couldnt ask you. Then you accuse me of breaking the rules
when I havent and pick on me when Im ill. Youre bullying me
and Im going to complain to Mr Anderson.

JAMES turns around to walk off and ELDON grabs his blazer to
stop him. JAMES pushes his hand away making ELDON stumble and
lose his footing. JAMES laughs and takes out his phone.
ELDON
WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM? WELL?! WELL?!!

Terrified, JAMES tussles back and ELDON releases his grip to

see JAMES fall to the ground.
STUDENT
Thats my phone! You cant do that! Hes mashed up my phone.
OTHER STUDENTS
Thats out of order. And he attacked

Tracking

ELDON stops himself and the realisation of his actions hits

him, hard. He slowly backs away and begins to push several
students out of his way and dashes down a corridor.

Low angle

EXT. LOCATION Corridor

ELDON sprints, his thoughts racing as fast as his current
speed. He doesnt stop, he continues to run with the guilt
soon becoming far too overwhelming.
EXT LOCATION- Outside the main school
ELDON pulls out his cell phone and dials CHARLOTTES number.
ELDON
Hello? Please, I dont want to argue anymore, I just want to
speak to my daughter
Blackout.
