Ritual in Honor of Woden

by Galina Krasskova

Begin by setting up a small altar for Woden. Anything that reminds you of Woden, or
calls His canon of sacred stories to mind is appropriate. You should also have a candle,
some incense, and either aquavit or whiskey to use as an offering and, if possible, a bit
of tobacco. Have a glass for the alcohol and a small bowl for the tobacco (or ash tray if
youre using a cigarette, tobacco, or pipe).
Evening Rite for Woden
Sit in front of the altar and spend a few moments centering yourself. Then, turning your
attention to Woden, light the candle and a bit of incense and offer the following prayer.
Invocation to Woden
Hail to Woden,
World-shaper, wisdom seeker,
Wyrd walker, wandering God.
Hail to He Who brings
both weal and woe
Who hung on the Tree,

Who gnawed upon His own spear,

to tear a hole between the worlds.
Hail to He, who won the runes,
Who, burned by their fire,
Shrieked His spells,
and burned them all right back.

Hail to the All-Father,

Ruthless, fearless, mighty God,
Weapons wise and wondrous Lord.
Bestow Your blessings upon me here tonight,
and may my prayer be pleasing to You.
Hail, Woden.

Meditation:
In our cosmology, Woden (or Odin) is the God who breathed His breath into the first
human beings, imbuing them with life. Hes the breath-giver, and our continued breath
is His gift. The first breath we take is drawn from Him and the last breath we exhale
will be given back to Him. That is the focus of this meditation, that primal connection,
that spiritual umbilicus.
Sitting comfortably, begin to focus on your breath. Feel the coolness of the breath as
you inhale. Allow yourself to feel the intercostals (the muscles between your ribs)
expand and release. Spend a few moments focusing on the inhalation, the feel of the
breath flowing into your lungs, the expansion of your diaphragm followed by the
exhalation, the rush of breath leaving your lungs, the contraction. Become aware of the
circular rhythm and once you have spent a few moments focusing on your breath, turn
your attention to Woden.
As you breathe, think about the creation story. Think about that first kiss of breath, the
moment that Odin breathed life into Ask and Embla, waking them to their own
humanity. Think about what that set in motion, and the long progression of humanity
that flowed from the moment of that kiss.

Visualize, feel, or imagine (whatever works for youpeople work and process these
things differently and not everyone is visual) that you are connected to Woden by the
cord of your breath, by that very rhythm of the inhalation and exhalation of your
breathing. Imagine that as you inhale, you are consciously drinking in His breath, that
He is breathing into you, and as you exhale, you are breathing into Him and He is
drinking in your breath. Continue this for at least five minutes, longer if you can. Focus
on the give and take, on drinking in His breath, and the connection further strengthened
when you exhale into Him. When you are ready to stop, exhale for a final time and then
take a few moments to re-orient yourself to your space, making sure that you are
properly grounded.
Offering
Pour out some of the whiskey or aquavit into a glass and put it on the altar, offering it to
Woden with the words, Divine Breath-giver, I give this liquor to You in offering.
Light the tobacco if it is a cigarette or cigar or pipe otherwise just sprinkle it into a small
offering bowl. I also give You this tobacco, for Your pleasure. May these small gifts
be pleasing to You. Hail, Woden.
Spend however long you like in further contemplation. If this is being done as a group
ritual, a horn should be passed at this point so that everyone may hail and honor Woden.

Closing Prayer
Thank You, Woden,
for Your wisdom.
I hail You now, All-Father,
and always.
Hail, Woden.
The ritual is now ended. You may allow the candle to burn down or, if you wish, snuff it out
and save it for the next Wednesday nights rite.

The following are the official Wheel of the Year Rites used by Wodens Folk for
the Woden Folk-Religion. They can be adapted for use by a Lone-Wolf Activist
or used for group work as they are. They are being continually developed as we
go along and may be subject to changes. They can be used by any Wodenist,

These rites can be adapted for individual use; using each one at the right time
of the year will link the individual with his kinfolk in other areas, and to Nature
and the Cosmic Cycles that make up Natural Law. These have been made as
standard as possible so as to be able to be learnt over a period of use.
THE SYMBEL This is a Ritual Drinking from the Mead-Horn where toasts &
boasts are made. Toasts are made to the Gods and Ancestors, and heroic
deeds are remembered by those present within the Folk-Ring. This can still be
done by the individual working alone. After the Symbel a small quantity of the
Mead is poured upon the Earth as a gift from Mankind to the Gods and to the
Mother of Earth.
These rites can be done at an ancient site, stone circle, burial mound, sacred grove, or anywhere that has
the "feel" of a magical area. They can also be adapted for use indoors

A Prayer To Odin
by Galina Krasskova

Those of us owned by You,

who have trembled in delicious fear
at Your presence,
praise Your name,
Odin, All-Father,
Master of the Tree .
Oh Son of Bestla
Son of Borr
born when the worlds were yet to be formed,
born of those first generations
to arise from Ymirs horde ,
You with Your brothers,
forged a new race of Gods,
rising from violence,
shooting toward wisdom
like the fleetest of comets
shooting toward the earth .
You are called Gangleri,
Wandering God,
at home nowhere and everywhere;
You are called Sigtyr,
brilliant in Your battle- glory ,
born to conquer, to possess the world;
You are called Grimnir,
and by vitki Yggr,
in honor of Your terrible time upon the Tree.
You are known by these and many other names,
and the paths to You are many.
We praise them all, that You may savor
in each of Your guises,
and by whichever name pleases You the most
the fermentation of our spirits.
May these words please You oh God,
and may You bestow upon us,
whose mouths overflow
with adoration and praise,
the terrible grace of Your blessing.

Walpurgisnacht Ritual for Odin

by Gavin Kreskin
I created this rite to celebrate Walpurgisnacht, April 30, the night that it is said that
Odin hung on the tree for the ninth day and the runes came to him. It involves twenty seven heiti or names of Odin. Twenty-seven is three times nine, or three to the third.
Three and nine are numbers associated with Odin. This rite is meant to be a solitary
ritual that is the preliminary to a group ritual, but it can also be adapted to group
working. To do the rite, you will need to find a box and mark it with Odinic symbols
such as runes or the valknot. You will also need the twenty-seven items in the following
list, and they will each be ceremonially placed into the box for one of his aspects. The
box will be put in a dark, dry place for a year, and then brought out the following
Walpurgisnacht and carried around in a group ritual for Odin. Each person takes one
item from the box until they are all gone, and these are the aspects of Odin that they
should pray to during the following year. If you like, the box-making can be a group
effort as well, and the box can be refilled that night for keeping until the next year.
You will need:[1]
A piece of dark blue cloth, rolled up
A cotton ball, slightly pulled apart , for a cloud
A small string of silver beads
A bead that looks like an eye
A small silver offering cup
A stick with blue and gray ribbons tied to it, like a miniature staff
A small figure of a horse
A silver string with nine knots tied in it
The rune Ansuz carved or painted on something
A small spear (I made mine out of a stick and a bit of cut tin from a can lid)
A small sword
A tiny knife, smaller than the sword
A small shield

Three twigs of an ash tree, tied together with black thread

A rusty piece of chain
A piece of gray cloth, rolled up
A small blue glass bottle, corked or sealed, filled with mead
A piece of string formed into a noose
Two cords, one white and one black, knotted together
A knotted red cord
A silver coin
A clear glass marble
A few gray hairs donated by a wise elder of Odin, tied together with blue thread
A twig of evergreen, preferably yew, but it can be fir or spruce
A colorful glass marble
A piece of black cloth, rolled up
Two black feathers, wrapped together with gray thread and hung with blue beads

To begin, stand with your arms lifted and speak this invocation:
Hail to Odin, Wise and Powerful!
By blue of twilight sky I honor you,
By blue of single eye I honor you,
By blue of autumn winds I honor you.
By gray of storm cloud I honor you,
By gray of the roads dust I honor you,
By gray of winter skies I honor you.
By black of ravens wing I honor you,
By black of impending Doom I honor you,

By black of deepest mysteries I honor you.

Alfor, All-Father,
Take me beneath your cloak and protect me.
Place the blue cloth into the box.
Asagrimm, Ruler of the Aesir, teach me who will be loyal to me and who will not.
Place the cotton cloud into the box.

Place the knotted silver string into the box.
Runagu, Rune-God, show me the wisdom for which you sacrificed yourself.
Place the Ansuz rune into the box.
Biflindi, Spear-Shaker, encourage me to move when I have fallen down.
Place the little spear into the box.
Virir, Stormer, teach me humility in the face of my own wyrd.
Place the little sword into the box.

Place the bundle of gray hairs into the box.
Grimnir, Hooded One, walk with me into the shadows and bring me out again.
Place the black cloth into the box.

Julfar, Yule-Father, send the Wild Hunt to watch my back.

Place the evergreen twig into the box.
Vifrager, Widely Famed, teach me how to make my mark on the world.
Place the colorful marble into the box.
Hrafnagu, Raven God, I honor you with all that I know. Teach me to know more about
all things, that I might have more with which to honor you.
Place the twin raven feathers into the box.
Close the box and put it aside. If you are solitary, choose object (or piece of paper)
every ninth night from the box picking blindly and pray to that aspect of Odin to
teach you. There are other aspects of Odin as well, and perhaps on a different
Walpurgisnacht you might want to honor a new list, but this should keep you busy for at
least a year.

[1] If you are in prison while you attempt to do this ritual, it is possible to origami a
little box out of paper, and draw symbols of Odin upon it, and instead of symbolic items
you can have small slips of paper that can be rolled up and placed within. Each can have
the name of Odin written on it, or a picture of the item, or both. Remember that one of
the names of Odin is God of Prisoners, and he is there to keep you strong if you call
upon him.
