Jaipur: The Jaipur Municipal

Corporation (JMC), once again
turned out to be a complete failure in earning revenue in financial year 2014 2015.
In the absence of stringent
action, the defaulters continue
to evade the urban development (UD) and house tax in the
city. With the financial year almost ending, the corporation
has been able to achieve only
1% of the target of house tax.
As per documents available
with TOI, the corporation recovered Rs 76.69 lakh of house tax
as against the target of Rs 100
crore for the financial year.
Similarly, as against Rs 150
crore target set for UD tax in
this financial year, JMC recovered Rs 27.05 crore. An official
said that the total amount corporation has to collect is Rs 430
crore UD tax and Rs 170 crore
house tax from the residents.
Minimum revenue has
been collected from the zones
in Walled City areas. The record of Hawa Mahal (west )
zone shows only Rs 1.99 lakh
house tax and Rs 52.96 lakh UD
tax was collected . Similarly, Rs
14.79 house tax and Rs 97.74 urban development tax was collected from Hawa Mahal (east)

JMC has now woken up from
its slumber to collect taxes.

Jaipur: During a drive on recovery of pending stamp duty, Jyoti
Chauhan, the deputy inspector general (DIG), Jaipur claimed to
have earned Rs 26.5 crore revenue in the last three weeks from
firms and individuals under Amnesty scheme. As per the records,
Rs 25 crore was solely recovered from a cement company which
evaded duty payable on demerger of its two companies. As per
notification issued by the finance department certain rebates on
interest and penalties were offered to the firms under the said
scheme while paying pending duty. The duties are mainly of
signing lease deed and other paper works. TNN

Finally, no more elephant polo

matches for tourists in state
Rachnasingh@timesgroup.com

Jaipur: Elephant polo finally comes to

an end in Rajasthan, ironically this
time not through enforcement from the
government but through the stakeholders themselves. The awareness was initiated by the Times of India campaign,
Jumbo Cause.
There is some respite for the jumbos
in Amber as tourism stakeholders have
decided to issue an advisory against exhibition elephant polo matches. In a humane move that considers animal wellbeing more than the moolah earned
through elephant polo, tour operators
are now informing the foreign agents
not to book any more tours promising
elephant polo in Rajasthan.
There was a Rajasthan high court
ban on elephant polo in 2008. The high
court had issued a notice to the state
government on the charges of violating
animal protection laws while permitting elephant polo matches and using
elephants for any kind of performance.
The ownership certificates had to be renewed every five years but the Rajasthan government failed to comply, said
wildlife activist Naresh Kadyan on

JUMBO

CAUSE

whose public interest litigation (PIL),

HC had banned polo. Kadyan had pointed out that elephant is a Schedule-I animal listed in the Wildlife Protection
Act, 1972 and requires protection in its
natural habitat. The PIL mentions the
provisions of Performing Animals
(Registration) Rules 2001, prohibiting
the use of elephants in entertainment
activities. Besides, the Animal Welfare
Board of India had also moved directions to stop elephant polo. I was not

aware that elephant polo was banned.

But now that I know it I have written to
all my agents that beginning now, I
would be unable to organize any more
elephant polo matches that are illegal,
said Udaijit Singh of Dera Amber.
In Jaipur elephant polo was played
at Rambagh and Jai Mahal hotels, Dera
Amber and City Palace. But now that
Rambagh, Jai Mahal and Dera Amber
have refused to organize it for tourists
even City Palace would not organize it.
We have received a mail from all
three refusing to organize elephant polo and have informed our counterparts
across the world. All foreign agents
have been informed not to book any
more groups for elephant polo, said
Khalid Khan, executive director, Le
Passage to India.
Another tour operator of a prominent destination management company said, A letter has been sent to our
head office and country offices around
the world. We have informed our head
office and told overseas agents that elephant polo is not available henceforth
as it is illegal. We dont mind losing
business but will not do anything
wrong.

Gangster under scanner for ATM loot

Jaipur: Admitting striking similarities between ATM
thefts that took place in Pragpura village on the outskirts
of Jaipur and Rajgarh village in Churu and the Jaipurs
ATM theft of 2011, the police have not ruled out the role of
notorious vehicle-lifter Sher Singh Dhadhren. Since he
had escaped from police custody from a train passing
through Kota in October 2013, the police have started looking for his accomplices to crack the cases in Pragpura and
Rajgarh that took place in the past couple of days.
On the spurt of such cases in the state, a senior police
officer, said: It appears that gangs involved in ATM robberies have re-activated themselves. There could be a rea-

son that some gang members were either on bail or have

completed their jail terms. There could be a chance that
Sher Singh must have mobilized his team and could be behind the Pragpura situated ATM uproot case. The modus
operandi is similar to that of New Aatish Market ATM uproot case that took place in 2011, said the officer.
We have got some concrete clues and will certainly
work out this case, said Pushpendra Singh Rathore, additional SP, Kotputli on Thursday.
There is certainly a connection between the escape of
Sher Singh and the ATM theft case of Rajgarh in Churu
that took place on Wednesday, said an officer. TNN

Cold wave conditions revive as temperature dips, fog affects traffic

RATING SCALE

POOR

AVERAGE

Amit Sharmas Tevar, a remake of

the Telugu hit Okkadu (2003), is overa-decade-old wine served on a larger
canvas. But one mustnt grudge the
filmmaker for telling us an old story.
After all, in the last decade, not much
has changed in the political landscape
of India. The Gajenders of the
country do run a parallel government.
So when murders are committed in
broad daylight or the media is lynched
by a mob, you have to just stand by
and watch.
Instead, you reserve those claps for
Babbar and Bajpayee, who deliver class
acts even in this milieu. Arjun is
bombastic. Sonakshi is adept, but there
has been an overdose of her in recent
times. Subrat Dutta as the henchman
Kakdi shows that a good actor can do
wonders even in a lesser role.
The songs Superman and Shruti
Haasans playback attempt Joganiya
have recall value. Of course, the film
shouldve been reduced by a good 20
minutesit doesnt run quite as fast as
Arjun does on screen.
Amit makes a smooth progression
from 30-second commercials to a
159-minute-long film. His penchant for
colours, the right use of the Taj Mahal
(as a monument of love), his finesse
ings, all of which are characterized by
portraits of all kinds of people, with
larger than life eyes.
The movie essentially revolves
around Margaret and Walter. As a fellow artist who also makes his living by
selling paintings, he meets Margaret
by chance at a local fair. He sells his
works for $35 while the unsavvy Margaret is willing to paint a portrait for
$2. Walter, a better salesman than a
painter, knows he is no match for her
artistically but he knows a good catch
when he sees one. He soon charms and
marries her and then passes off her
paintings under his own name along
with smiley-face salesmanship to make
big bucks. It is essentially plagiarism
disguised by a veneer of love and it is
only a matter of time before Margaret
takes off the rose-tinted glasses and
sees things as they really are.
Adams Margaret is yielding at first
but gradually, her righteous indignation
takes over. Waltz plays the consummate
scoundrel, a wolf in sheeps clothing,
with ease. The film is largely compelling

police is looking for a man on
suspicion that he murdered his
75-year-old landlord and stuffed
his body in an iron box before
disappearing. The body of the
landlord had been found from
his house in Bas Badanpura area on Wednesday. Though the
involvement of the tenant in the
crime is yet to be confirmed, the
police said the victim was last
seen alive on January 5 and the
suspect who lived in a portion of
the victims house is also missing since then.
Sources said that the police
have clues about the identity of
the suspect. However, there is
no evidence suggesting so far
that the victim had verified the
tenant with the police as required by the norms.
According to the police, the
victim, Immamuddin alias Parantha, owned half-a-dozen

The officer said that Immamuddins son lodged a missing

to Immamuddins house which
was found locked from outside.
On suspicion, the lock was broken open and the officer felt a

In presence of the SHO and other officers, an iron box was

The officer said the body

the officer.
The officer added, We have

deadly skills thanks to his military and CIA background, but is also extremely ethical and discerning about when and how to use those skills. His prime
concerns are his ex-wife and daughter. And when someone

Screenwriters Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen
smoothly set up a situation that places Mills squarely in

Thereafter, Mills must evade the cops, seek revenge

All in all, a suitable swansong for the franchise.
