In 31 years of being an educator, a coach or both, Seneca
High School health and physical education teacher Francine
Siedlecki has been honored
with many awards.
The most recent recognition, though, may be the most
special.
The school chose Siedlecki
as its teacher of the year for
the 2015-16 school year.
"Hands down being awarded
the teacher of the year by my
fellow co-workers makes my
commitment to education that
much more rewarding. This
award is really not about me
but rather about all the students that I have been blessed
to teach and been able to offer
an appreciation for education,
our great school system and
culture, opportunity, advancement and success," Siedlecki
said.

The 10th time proved to be the charm as the Seneca girls basketball
team picked up its first win of the season on Tuesday, Jan. 20
against Eastern Regional High School to improve its record to 1-9.

fashion show scheduled for
Thursday, Feb. 5, Seneca High
School is quickly moving up the
list of most fashionable areas in
the world.
The event provides a learning
experience for those involved
but also a preview of styles for
the upcoming prom for friends
and parents in attendance.
Students are given the challenge of marketing the occasion
to the target audience.
Its a whole semester of
learning, said Grace McCloskey, a business education
teacher at Seneca who oversees
the event. The students need to
decide the best form of promotion for the event.
Organizers utilize their personal social media accounts to
help reach the target audience
comprised of peers and their
families.
These kids are so quick
these days, especially with technology, McCloskey said.

then they actually apply it, McCloskey said, noting students

Having the TV technology
has been phenomenal, she
said. The students also utilize
the media center.
The kids just work so hard
on this project. They really
stepped up to the plate, McCloskey said.
Part of the assignment was
creating a budget for the event
as well as reaching out to local
businesses to donate goods for a
silent auction. Close to twodozen baskets will be provided
for attendees to bid on, with
prizes ranging from restaurant
gift certificates to candles and

students from across the region. The students qualified at the competition and will go on to the state competition along with 10 other
students who produced a 30-page marketing research paper. The
State Leadership Competition will be held at the Crowne Plaza on

Chris Christie, is debating a run
for president of the United States
in 2016. While he hasnt officially announced whether he will throw his hat
into the ring, many believe he will do
so within the next few months.
In recent speeches, Christies focus
has been on bigger national issues.
Last summer and fall, during election
season, he traveled all over the country and helped fellow Republicans
campaign for gubernatorial seats.
This past weekend, he traveled to Iowa
for a Republican summit.
All signs point to Christie announcing his candidacy for president. But
would he make a good president?
According to a poll released last
week, New Jersey voters dont think

so. A Quinnipiac University poll found

that 57 percent of registered voters in
New Jersey did not think Christie
would make a good president. Almost
one-third of Republicans polled didnt
think Christie would be a good president, along with 78 percent of Democrats and 59 percent of independents.
In the same poll, 52 percent of Garden State voters said they would
choose Democrat Hillary Clinton over
Christie in a hypothetical election be-

tween the two.

Christie has won two gubernatorial
elections in New Jersey by a wide
margin in a predominantly Democratic state but apparently our
states voters dont think hed be good
for the higher post. Its not altogether
surprising, and not a death sentence
for a potential bid for president either.
The last president from New Jersey,
Woodrow Wilson, didnt win his own
state, after all.
Maybe New Jersey voters just dont
think Christies personality would
work well running our country. Or
maybe they dont think his politics
would work on a global scale. Or
maybe they just want their governor
to concentrate on New Jersey while
hes still in that post.

large group of students was a
challenge.
It can be tough, she said, noting an increase of students from
years past. Its hard to keep them
focused sometimes.
McCloskey allowed the students to take the reins, acknowledging she lends them guidance
throughout the process.
They cant learn unless they
make mistakes, which they do,
McCloskey said.

The night is comprised of students strutting their stuff across

the auditorium stage while student hosts and Gene Mosca of
Formal Expressions Tuxedos explain what the kids are wearing.
The event not only raises money
for the schools marketing class
but also gives parents an idea of
what their child can wear to the
prom.
McCloskey said the best part of
the show is when the event is over
and the students see what they
did. The show is recorded and
each student gets a digital copy to
show prospective schools or employers.
Ive learned that if you give
the students a challenge, they will
meet it, McCloskey said.

ment was made at a faculty meeting after school, but not for
Siedlecki. The school held an academic pep rally as part of the One
Book, One School program on the
Monday before holiday break
began. Nearing the conclusion of
the pep rally, Siedlecki was speaking with another teacher and did
not even hear that her name had
been called.
It was a flooring experience, I
was frozen. I saw Bradley Bauer
(director of athletics) pointing at
me telling me that it was me. It
was certainly a surprise,
Siedlecki said. The students
were all cheering and were very
excited. It was a great experi-

ence.
After substituting at area
schools in the early 1980s, Siedlecki took a temporary maternity
leave position in 1984 at Shawnee
High School where she taught
freshman and sophomore physical education along with driver's
education. Shawnee began to
grow that fall and needed to hire
additional staff, leading to
Siedlecki being offered a full-time
health and physical education position. She continued instructing
and coaching there for the next 19
years, teaching mostly sophomore physical education and driver's
education.
While
at
Shawnee, Siedlecki took over the
head tennis coach position in 1986
and the head track coach position
in 1988. She continued as the head
coach in both sports until she left
for Seneca in 2003. Both teams ex-

perienced success under Siedlecki, with the track team winning a

state championship in 1999.
In the fall of 2003, Siedlecki
took her energy and excitement
to the Lenape Regional High
School District's newest school,
Seneca. The track team was
quickly successful, capturing
back-to-back state championships
in 2009 and 2010. Siedlecki continued to teach and coach at Seneca
until she resigned from coaching
tennis in 2009 and track in 2011.
The atmosphere at the school was
one she quickly took to.
The students are very upbeat
and very friendly here. Its a different atmosphere for sure,
Siedlecki said. I love coming to
work every day.
Along with her peaceful drive
from Berlin through the farms of
Shamong and Tabernacle each
morning, Siedlecki loves supervising the students as they enter
school from the buses each morning, greeting and talking with
many as they pass.
And this year, Siedlecki will get
to return to another aspect of the
job she loves coaching.
The current girls track coach
will be on maternity leave, so I
said I would be the interim coach,
just for this year. Itll be fun with
a whole different group of kids
that I havent coached before.
They have no idea what theyre in
for, Siedlecki said with a laugh.
