God at Work in the World: Winter Presentation Series

Come and hear how God is at work throughout our world! We will gather for a series
of presentations about various places that God and Gods people are working to bring
about healing and wholeness to the entire earth. Here are some of the highlights from
the upcoming series:

Wednesday, February 4 at 6:30 in the Roger Williams Room. Members of the Mission Team to Nicaragua from FBC Topeka will be presenting on their trip last
summer.

Wednesday, February 11 at 6:30 International guitarist, Charles David Smart in concert. Whether performing for widely diverse venues (Festivals to Cathedrals), picking backstage at Nashvilles Grand
Ol Opry, jamming in the family pubs of Ireland or playing in leading American university concert halls, multi-styled,
award winning, Nashville recording guitarist Charles David Smart gives it all with passion and energy.
(We would like to thank the Eunice Phillips family for their generous donation of memorial funds to underwrite the cost of this concert.)

Heroes of the Faith

Winter Worship Series

(January 11-February 8)

In a world of superheroes and comic book figures, it is sometimes easy to forget

that the real heroes of our faith have always been those who take their ordinary
gifts and allow God to use them in extraordinary ways. Join us as we explore
those heroes of the faith that give us hope for how we, too, can save the world!
February 1: Anne Hutchinson (I Corinthians 8.1-13)
February 8: Shane Claiborne (Matthew 25.31-46) Cody Knapik preaching: Scout Sunday

Lenten Studies Offered During Lent

During Lent this year, you might consider
adding in a practice. Over
the noon hour (11:301:00) on Wednesdays,
we will be sharing a meal
(bring your own) and a
Lenten study. It begins on
Ash Wednesday, February 18, and will conclude
April 8. Also, on Wednesday evenings during Lent,
the after-meal study will involve the opportunity to experience a variety of spiritual practices, one (or more) of which you might find
touches your soul for years to come. This
time will be offered February 25, March 4, 11,
18, 25, April 1, and 8. Look for more details
on both of these events in future newsletters.
An Ash Wednesday service will be held on
Wednesday, February 18, after the meal.

Box of Justice
What do chronic bronchitis, obesity, suicide, major depression, and
teenage pregnancy all have in common?
The seeds for these outcomes were planted in childhood, according to
the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study.
The ACE study screened its participants for 10 different adverse experiences in childhood, ranging from physical/sexual abuse or neglect
to having a parent who suffered from mental illness. Children with 4
or more of these specific traumas are:
390% more likely to have emphysema or chronic bronchitis
240% more likely to contract a sexually transmitted disease
2x more likely to be smokers, 12x more likely to attempt suicide,
7x more likely to be alcoholic, and 10x more likely to have injected
street drugs.
Our committee continues to explore this study and how other cities
have used ACE screening to strengthen families and prevent trauma.
This week, we hope to get a better picture of early childhood interventions through Healthy Families and gather data from behavioral
health assessments conducted by elementary school teachers in our
community.

Thank you
Dear friends, Happy New Year, and greetings in the name
of our Lord, Jesus Christ! I want to thank you all so
much for your words of encouragement. Every text,
every email and every card, means so much to me. A
special thank you to all of you who have sent me Christmas and birthday cards. Please friends know that I am
very thankful for you all. I was in Las Vegas to visit my
best friend whos just had a premature baby on December 7th. He was only 2lbs. When I next talked to my
friend, the great joy is that the baby is now 4 lbs., and he
is breathing without help. I am very grateful for that.
God is amazing! I just had my first class at the seminary. We went to the Abbey for a week. It was a wonderful experience. I returned home feeling refreshed and
with a spirit of peace. I am now getting ready to go on a
mission trip with FBC, KCMO to Mexico. We leave on
Friday, January 23rd. I am very excited and very grateful
to be able to go and be Gods hands and feet in Tijuana.
Thank you again for your prayers, your love and your
support. Please keep me in your prayers, that I may be a
good listener to God! I will pray for you, that together in
2015 we exhibit Gods grace in every relationship. I love
you all! May God bless you abundantly!!!
~Blessings and Peace, Dezo

Thank you all who sent cards, called, and prayed for me
after my recent surgery. I am doing well now!
