Throughout the year, we will celebrate each member of our classroom.
Each student will have a chance to be the STAR STUDENT OF THE
WEEK!

!Near the beginning of

HOME/SCHOOL
FOLDER
Each student will be
provided with a plastic
folder that has their name
on it and is labeled as their
Home/School Folder.

It

should be taken back and

forth between home and
school every day.
When you open this folder
at home, you will find
homework materials and
any other notices that are
to be sent home.
Please use this folder to
send in any notes, lunch

school!

their special week, your

son or daughter should
bring in a poster that
highlights who they are.
It may include
photographs of
themselves and any
family or friends they
wish. It will serve to
show their classmates
more about themselves -
what they like, favorite
things, friends,
experiences, etc...

!The kids will present

their posters to the class

during their Star
Week and the poster will
be displayed so that
classmates can use it to
write a letter to the Star
Student. All of the
letters, including one
from me, will be bound
into a book for them to
keep.

! Allied Arts Schedule

There are a couple of things your child will need
on a weekly basis.
!
!Sneakers will be needed
One of the best
parts about
art is that its
a license to be
messy! Your
child will need
an oversized shirt to be
put on over their clothing
to be sure they stay neat
and clean.

for every PE class.

Be sure that your child
wears or brings sneakers
each Monday.
If your child has an extra
pair, they are encouraged
to keep them in their
cubby so they wont
be without them.

Class Store
Each week the kids will have different jobs that help to
make our classroom a place that is both fun and safe.
Each day that they remember to do their jobs, the
children will earn income.
At the end of each month, our class, as well as 2 others,
will open a class store during the math period and the
children may choose to spend their earnings there.
The boys and girls will be able to get authentic practice
using money as well as having fun.
The key factors that make this activity not only fun but
also a valuable and meaningful learning experience will
be parent volunteers to help with counting money and
making purchases as well as donations for our
inventory.
Items can be sent in at anytime during the school year
and will be very much appreciated by the kids!

water bottle. MIlk (white or
chocolate) and juice is available
for purchase as well.

!Please remember that the

cafeteria does not supply

spoons or forks for snack
times. They are available in the
cafeteria for lunch, but
students need to bring them if
their snack requires them. I
will try to have some available
for just in case and Ill always
accept donations too! :)

This includes items meant to be

used at recess such as balls, bats,
and gloves. We have playground
equipment for the kids to use
during recess including jump
ropes, 4 square balls, sidewalk
chalk, kickballs and skip-its.
If they are going somewhere after
school and wish to bring toys
with them, they may bring them
to school, but they must remain
inside their backpack.

Snacks
In our classroom, we will have
a morning snack, but no
afternoon snack.

We ask that students leave all

toys and trading cards at home.
There have been cases of
misplaced or lost items in the
past and in order to prevent any
hurt feelings, I prefer to just have
all toys stay at home.

Bag Book
reading &
activity

Almost every night there will be some

homework for your child to complete. Part of
what they will be responsible for is doing
some reading each day. There will be a
Reading Log each week for you to fill out
together showing how many minutes were
read each day. At least 15 minutes of reading
each day is expected, but the reading can be
anything they choose. Books, magazines, even
the comics count! Time that you spend reading
to them can also be included in their reading
totals.

Once I have everyone

s email addresses,
I will enter them onto
my mailing list.
You will get an emai
l message asking to
confirm and then whe
n I update the
blog, you will get a no
tification. The
blog also has a class
calendar, links to
helpful websites and
documents, as well
as our Allied Arts an
d Star of the Week
schedules.

Sometime in October, each student will have

a weekly Bag Book to bring home. This will
be a book with an activity that they will have
a week to complete and return. The time
they spend reading this book will also count
toward their reading totals.

From time to time I w

ould like to share
photos from our clas
sroom, so I will be
asking for a separate
permission slip
just for the blog. No
names will be
added to the pictures
, but if you dont
want your childs im
age posted at all, I
will respect that here
as well as on
other RSU 21 sites.

There is also a nightly math Home Link

worksheet. This math homework will be a
review of what we worked on during class
and should not take more than 10-15 minutes
to complete. It is often reviewed the next
day before moving on with the next lesson,
so it is very important that it comes back
with them in their Home/School Folders.

Volunteering
Volunteering is so important here at KES. As a
volunteer, you can provide our kids with great role
models. If you have some extra time and the
desire, your help will be very much appreciated.!

If you dont have much time to offer, but would still

like to do something to help, there are
opportunities to assist the classroom in other
ways. We always need donations of tissues,
hand sanitizer (with pump tops or sanitizing
wipes), band-aids, plastic zip-top bags, and other
supplies. Donations for our Class Store (see page
3) are always welcome as well!!

I have several different kinds of volunteering

opportunities and other needs come up
throughout the year for things like field trips and
PE programs like roller skating and snow
shoeing. You can sign up here tonight or contact
me later. Your support is always greatly
appreciated, no matter how you do it!

Studies have shown that the brain

can benefit from movement during
learning. Many of our teachers
have implemented the use of
stability balls in the classroom as a
replacement for standard desk
chairs and found it to be
successful. I will be continuing
this program as an option to my
2nd graders. If your child would
like to use a stability ball in
replacement of a chair, they may
use one. Each child will use only
their ball which will be adjusted to
best fit them at their desk. We will
begin the year using chairs and
introduce the balls after several
lessons about how to use them
safely and properly.
