Treatment Runaway
My short film will be revolving around a girls personal story of her
differences with culture and love. She is torn between her family wanting
her to have an arranged marriage and her boyfriend whos a different
ethnicity to herself. Her name is Fatima. She is from a deprived area in
East London and is of Islamic descent. The theme of this short film will
revolve around a social realist topic of forced marriage. The cultural ties in
a family who enforce honour and arrange marriage will be explored
however the controversy between a young girl who lives in a western
society is also explored. Her cross cultural ties impact her life, and she
finds it difficult to manage both parts of her life. Despite her family she
has a boyfriend who her family will never approve of. Themes explored will
be oppression, culture, escape and frustration. ?
She is East African and her parents are strong followers of Islam. The
character will first be denoted in her house washing her face and she
looks up. Diegetic voiceovers then can be heard in the background which
will be voiceovers of her mum and dad and relatives of her family saying
such things like We cant wait for your wedding day You cant bring
your family shame. She will rush to her living room and we will see shots
of her packed suitcases. She then rushes to her bedroom and its on her
coat and grabs her phone. The pace of the film will speed up and the
music will become more upbeat. She will be seen via a master shot of her
rushing out of her flat, following this she seen via an establishing shot of
her walking fast alongside the camera, this will be similar to the walking
shots of About A Girl. She will look at the camera as though she is having
a conversation and say things such as I dont have to do this, its my life.
I dont care We will film close ups of the background of her phone of a
black and white hand and a text from a character Peter, who is her
interracial boyfriend who she is in love with but her family have arranged
for her to get married to someone else of her own country. This will allow
the audience to understand her frustration because she has a boyfriend
her family do not approve of.
The protagonist is then seen walking to the station, there will be several
shots of her looking distressed and voice overs once again of her family.
There will also be close ups of her wrist and a bracelet she received as a
gift from Peter. There will be flashbacks of her eyes crying. There will be
several shots of busy people walking past; I will also convert this to a slow
pace and a strong heartbeat audio. I will use a transition and the final shot
will be of one of Fatimas teacher talking straight to the camera as though
he is talking to someone. He will say We dont know where your daughter
is Miss Mohammed; all we know is that shes gone and we suspect it was

her who poisoned your husband. This will be the final shot and it will
provide the enigmatic ending that I will seek from my short film.
