ST VALENTINES Day, also

known as Valentines Day or
the Feast of Saint Valentine,
on February 14 each year, is
celebrated in many countries
around the world.
Although nowadays it is a
joyful and romantic occasion,
a chance for lovers to declare
their feelings to one another,
it has rather darker origins,
celebrating a Christian saint
who was persecuted under
the Roman Empire.
According to legend, during
his imprisonment, Saint Valentine healed the daughter of
his jailer. An embellishment
to this story states that before
his execution he wrote her a
letter signed Your Valentine
as a farewell.
It remains an official feast
day in the Anglican Communion, and was first asso-

ciated with romantic love in

the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages,
when the tradition of courtly
love flourished.
In 18th-century England,
it evolved into an occasion
in which lovers expressed
their love for each other by
presenting flowers, offering
confectionery, and sending
greeting cards (known as
valentines).
Since the 19th century,
handwritten valentines have
given way to mass-produced
greeting cards.
Welsh lovers are fortunate
in being able to celebrate
two days dedicated to lovers
their own patron saint of
lovers on Santes Dwynwen
Day on January 25, as well as
St Valentines Day, held a few
weeks later.
