Title: Dogu Doll Pinch Pot

Grade Level: 12th


Time Needed: 1 Class Period

Lesson Description/Focus

Students will be shown how to create a pinch pot to form a dolls head & they will then construct a body
for the doll out of clay. Dolls will be made in the fashion of the Japanese Dogu dolls. After construction
of the dolls the students will write a short one page essay describing the process they learned for making
a pinch pot, what Dogu dolls were for and where they originate. During the construction of the dolls
the instructor will lecture over the origins, nature and meanings of classic Dogu dolls reinforcing
previous classes.

Learning Activity Summary

Upon completion of the pinch pot sculpted Dogu dolls students will have learned what tools, methods
and techniques that might have been used by the Japanese in creating the originals. Students will also
understand the meaning and use of the dolls in Japanese culture. In writing the essay over the dolls
students will demonstrate knowledge as to the original purpose of the dolls and what they dolls might
represent to them personally. Students will comprehend the differences and similarities between dolls as
they are conceived in American society and what the Dogu dolls were in their historical context.
