1. INTRODUCTION.
In preparing an estimate, the quantities of different items of work are
calculated by simple mensuration method and from these quantities, the cost is
calculated. The subject of estimating is simple, nothing much to understand, but
knowledge of drawing is essential. Manual method of estimation is time
consuming with respect to the quantity estimation. Existing estimation software
need to be input with quantities which can be only calculated manually from 2D
drawings . This is major weakness of the system . By adding a scanning method to
calculate the quantity automatically from drawings, EstimaX attempts to reduce the
time for estimation drastically. Rate Analysis can be easily done with the sub
functions like Rate Master, Work Sub Group. Reports can be easily prepared.

3.1 SCANNING AND SETTINGS
Different architects use different style to denote the joinery elements in their
drawings. Scanning and settings will help the users to create the joinery details for
a particular architectural drawing by entering the element name and the notation
used in the drawing. This can be used for scanning the CAD document.

In this window, Primary data represent Scan items and Secondary data
represent the total brick line length, total outer line length, total beam line length
and total joineries etc. By clicking the Next> button user can enter to the next step
in this window.
User can change the Storey height and brick height if necessary.
Click Append Scanning option for additional Scanning. (The text string acquired
from pre scanning will not get deleted on the new scan.)
23
EstimaX
Users can save length and number of centre line by using Save centre line len
option. After scanning users can see the numbers of lines on drawing. This will
help the users to check total length of brick.
Ful line option represents the wall line in full length. i.e. In CAD drawing wall
line exist below the joineries
Slab Area option is used for scan the slab and sunshade area from CAD drawing.
From this user can pick outer brick areas.
Click on sunshade option to scan sunshade area.
Users can scan slab area by using Polyline option, i.e. If the slab area in CAD
drawing represent by polyline (include line, Arch etc) users can scan the slab area
by picking this polyline.
Users can pick Outer Brick area by using Outer Brick option.
User can deduct a part of slab area by using Deduction Area.
After picking Transfer the details to Scan &derive window.
System automatically detects the area of slab and calculates volume of the
slab using Area*height formula. (By default the slab height is 0.11m. Users can
change the height manually). To deduct the slab area, click on deduction area and
24
EstimaX
pick the corners points. EstimaX automatically calculates the sunshade area by
taking the values from slab area. (Default width of sunshade is 0.6m) If the
sunshade is over the openings only, length is considered as length of openings plus
support length, (default support length is 0.3m,for each side users can edit this
value) but not drawn in the drawing.
Different choices of selecting option check boxes in this form is discussed below.
Option -1
Slab = Checked
Sunshade= Checked
OuterBrick= Checked
By selecting these options EstimaX assumes the picked lines are the outer bricks
and calculates the slab volume by multiplying the area enclosed by the line and the
slab depth. Also offsets this line and calculates the sunshade volume.
Option -2
Slab = Checked ; Sunshade= Checked
Outer Brick= Checked
It works as the same option but you can just click on a polyline already created
rather than picking all the points
Option -3
Slab = Checked
Sunshade= Checked
Scan Arch drw is used for scanning Architectural drawing, for getting the
length and width of brick work and the number of Joineries. In EstimaX, the brick
work above and below the joineries are added to the brick work item instead of
deduction of joineries.
25
EstimaX
Note: Before Scanning Architectural drawing set CAD drawing, i.e all wall
lines are in a particular layer which is used in settings. Notations of joineries
should be same as in Scanning and settings
To calculate the area for brick work,
First click on Scan Arch drw and select the brick layer from the Layout Drawing
from CAD (drawing should be in the same layer Compared to Scanning and
setting.)
After that click the right button of mouse or press enter key to complete the
procedure and minimize CAD. documents.

procedure and minimize CAD drawing file.
System automatically detects the number of columns and also takes the total
length of the beam. And also detect the volume of lintels by using the formula
Area* height. .The default height and breadth of the lintel are 0.15m and 0.23m
respectively which can be changed manually. If the lintel is through out, the length
of the lintel is total length of the brick work. If the lintel is provided over the
openings only, length is considered as the length of the openings and support
length for each side (default support length is 0.3m for each side, user can edit this
value.)
