Title Of Piece: Parenthood
Name of Character: Alex
Character Objective: To let Haddie down easily and tell her that I think we should take a break
ObstaclesInternal: to b as gentle as possible yet express how I feel.
External: to let Haddie down easily
TACTICS:

HADDIE: So, weve got, at the revival house, The Breakfast Club which weve seen
before, or theres like a weird animation festivalso we basically have seen it or its
weird.
ALEX: Umm, either one. To deflect
HADDIE: Thats not fair, I just described them to you, you have to make the decision.
ALEX: Neither one sounds too interesting, so just pick one.-to allude
HADDIE: What is your problem?...We could see the Michael Cera movie?
ALEX: Uhh, yeahI mean, I guess what Im saying is maybe I dont wanna see a
movie.- to confront
HADDIE: Ok, uhhwe can just hang out.
(pause)
ALEX: Somethingummsome-somethings off.- to acknowledge
HADDIE: Uh, sorry, I dont know what that means.
ALEX: Somethings off with uhh, with me.- to deflect
HADDIE: You have a lot, going on, do you wanna talk about something?
ALEX: Uh, its not, just with me, just with us.- to ignite
HADDIE: Ok, you mean with me.

ALEX: No, I mean with us. And its really hard to talk about but I havent felt right, in a
long time. And I dont wanna pretend anymore. And thats why I think that we shouldnt
see each other anymore. to confirm
(pause)
HADDIE: Why?
ALEX: Because, I think, um, that were in two different places in our life right now, and
its, its its holding us back, its a disconnect somewhere, and I think its- to embrace
HADDIE: Alex, Alex, Im sorry about the party.
ALEX: No, no baby, its not about the party, its something else, its like, a lot of times
when were together it feels like Im not even there with you, and, Haddie you deserve
someone thats gonna be there for you, all the way, all the time, and I dont know if I can
be that guy for you right now. And to incite
HADDIE: Yeah, just wanna bail.
ALEX: No, I just dont thinkI think its best for us if were not together,- to validate
HADDIE: Ok.
ALEX: Ok?- to infer
HADDIE: Yeah, I got it (she gets up to leave)
ALEX: Where you going? Can you just-can you -to query
HADDIE: I dont know, do you wanna go to the movies right now? IIm gonna go
home
ALEX: (overlapping her line) No, I dont want you to leave, were not even done talking,
can you just wait a second?- to incite
HADDIE: I dont really have anything to say
ALEX: Well can I at least take you home? Please? I insist. I dont want you walking
around this neighborhood by yourself. to infer
HADDIE: Ok, fine, lets do what you want.
