 ACT I

Scene 1

SETTING: We are at a Boba Shop in downtown Davis. There is a small

table stage right with two seats. ​Lights are Blue​.

AT RISE: ALEX, a 20-year-old college student, stands downstage

looking at her watch. ALEX is dressed in all black. Her friend, JAIME
is running late. They are 15 minutes late to be exact. JAIME runs in
wearing comfortably dressed in bright colors, carrying a backpack and
wearing a new blue hat backwards. ALEX spots JAIME

ALEX
Jaime! You made it. Late as always.

JAIME
Hey now, you can’t say always when we’ve only known each other for
like what? 3 months? Anyway I’m Filipinx. Time is a social construct.

Alex
I’m Filipino too. and I made it here on time.

JAIME
Congrats, Alex. You get a gold star for being extremely punctual.
What did you want to meet up for anyway?

ALEX
Can’t we just hang out every now and then? You need to take a break.
You study too much. C’s get degrees?

JAIME
Yeah but an A never hurt anyone.

(JAIME starts moving towards the table)

ALEX
THAT IS A LIE and you know it. The last A I got was freshman year and
I almost died trying to get it. That’s why I’ve sworn off A’s.

JAIME
If you’ve really sworn off of A’s then why do we study so much
together?

(JAIME sits down on the chair closer to offstage right)

 ALEX
Huh? I don’t know. I don’t want you to be lonely I guess. I’m nice
like that you know.
(ALEX pulls the other chair)

JAIME
Yeah yeah you are “nice”.

(ALEX sits on the chair, music plays as they interact. After a few
exchanges ALEX gets up to grab drinks from offstage right. JAIME
shows hat to ALEX. The pair chit chat and laugh at videos from their
phones. The music ends)(Music:”Owl City”-snippet)

VOICE
(off)
The store is closing in 30 minutes.

JAIME
30 minutes? What time is it?

ALEX
It’s 10:30 pm. Damn, we’ve been here for hours!

JAIME
10:30?? I’m gonna miss the bus. Sorry Alex, I gotta run.

(JAIME gets up)

ALEX
Pfft...yeah! No, it’s fine. I’ll see you soon?

Jaime:
Uhh...yeah! For sure. Sorry. Byeeee! I had fun tonight.

(JAIME exits stage left in a rush leaving behind their hat)

ALEX
Wait you left your--new hat
(shakes head and laughs, takes it and brings it close to her)
“Best Dad Ever” yeah right...

(BLACK OUT & Curtains Drop);(Music:Shake It)

 ACT I

Scene 2

SETTING: We are at the library. There is a big table with 4 chairs

stage left. ​Lights are Yellow​.

AT RISE: JAIME is sitting alone on the chair closest to off stage

left. ALEX is seen walking around stage right, looking quite lost.
ALEX eventually sees JAIME sitting and waves at them.

JAIME
(sarcastic)
Oh WOW is that Alex I see? And at the library no doubt. Whatever
happened to C’s get degrees?

ALEX
I still need to study a lot just to get C’s unlike some people. By
the way you left your hat yesterday. You know I could have totally
given you a ride home.

JAIME
Ah yes, my bad. I don’t usually leave in a hurry. I didn’t want to
impose. Plus I didn’t know we were that close. I guess I could use a
chauffeur.

ALEX
Chauffeur? You better be paying me for that. Or maybe I’ll just keep
this dope ass hat.
(JAIME tires to reach over ALEX but the ​lights turn RED​ and begin to
flicker​. LOOMING FIGURE 1 appears stage left and points at JAIME, who
is still trying to grab the hat away from ALEX. ALEX is frozen. She
seems to be the only one who notices the lights.)

JAIME
Hey give that back. That was expensive...ish!

(Alex continues to hold the hat up, but eventually drops it when
CASS, her sassy friend, runs in from stage right and gives her a
fright)

CASS
What’s up Alex! Jamie, hey.
(LOOMING FIGURE 1 runs off stage left when CASS shoves ALEX. ​Lights
change back to YELLOW​)

ALEX
Cass! What the heck. You scared me.

CASS
Hah! I must have got you real good. You look like you’ve seen a
ghost.

ALEX
I DID. WAIT did y’all see that? I seriously saw someone there.
(ALEX points stage left)

CASS
I hope I didn’t give you a concussion, cause there’s no one there.

ALEX
Well not now. But I swear there was someone wearing black pants and a
black hoodie right there! Pointing at you.
(ALEX points at JAIME)

JAIME
Okay, first of all, it’s not hard to find someone wearing all black.
Literally half of the people you know wear all black ALL THE TIME.
Second, why would someone be pointing at me? I only know a few
people- your friends really.

ALEX
You’ve got a point, but didn’t you see the lights flickering?

CASS and JAIME

Uhh no…

JAIME
Alex, if you came here to study, we should probably just do that.
Cass, do you want to join us?

CASS
(sarcastically)
That sounds fun, but no. I actually came here cause I saw Alex and
wanted to drag her literally elsewhere.

JAIME
Oh...well she’s all yours.

ALEX
Where are we going, Cass?

(ALEX gets pulled away by CASS, looks apologetic towards JAIME and
mouths an apology)

ACT I

Scene 3

SETTING: We are back at the Boba Place in Downtown. A small table

table is set with 2 chairs stage right. ​Lights are BLUE.

AT RISE: ALEX sits alone wearing brightly colored clothes. She is

studying when JAIME enters stage left.

JAIME
Hey, you missed out on some good studying yesterday. May I join you?

ALEX
Hah...yeah sorry about that. Cass always wants to go grab food.
(JAIME sits down in the empty chair)

JAIME
Same though. But in other news, look at you--not wearing ALL black
today. I love this new look. You pull it off well.

ALEX
Hahaha oh come on. You’re only saying that because you’re being nice.
I look like a clown. But you’re looking groovy as always.
(ALEX is kind of embarrassed at her use of the word “groovy”)

(​Lights flicker and change to RED​. LOOMING FIGURE 1 enters stage

right and points at JAIME again. Again, ALEX is the only one that
notices the flickering lights sees the figure)

ALEX
Okay, tell me you see that!
(point to LOOMING FIGURE 1)
It's back. I can't be the only one who sees this, right!

JAIME
Sigh...alright I think I know what you might be seeing. Alex, I think
(CASS runs in stage right)
What you might be seeing is my…

CASS
What is up my homies! how are y'all doing today? what are you two up
to?
(LOOMING FIGURE 1 disappears stage right. Lights change back to BLUE)
 ALEX
Us? oh uhh NOOOOTHINGGGGG! BUT ME, I saw a freaking ghosttt!
(ALEX points to where LOOMING FIGURE 1 was)

JAIME
(disappointed when Alex says nothing)

CASS
(CASS notices JAIME’s disappointment)
Alright Alex, I think it's time for an intervention. Take a walk with
me. Jamie, you don't mind if I borrow her right?

JAIME
Oh yeah no, go ahead.

CASS
Come on Alex.
(CASS pulls ALEX up and walks across to stage left)

CASS
What is up with you?
(ALEX is still looking over to where the figure was, also looking
around in case the figure appears again)
HEY
(CASS snaps her fingers to get ALEX's attention)
I'm over here. What in the world are you looking for?

ALEX
THAT THING ugh! I’m waiting for it to appear again. It runs away
whenever you're around.

CASS
Ouch! What are you trying to imply there, friend? I don’t scare
people away.

ALEX
I mean you’re a little extra sometimes. Plus I’m pretty sure Jaime is
afraid of you.

CASS
Uh huh...Jaime…
(CASS smiles and wiggles her eyebrows)

ALEX
(confused)
What? Why are you looking at me like that?
 CASS
Okay, you’ve been going to the library and hanging out with a certain
someone A LOT. For crying out loud you stopped wearing so much black.
I think you like someone.

ALEX
You think I like Jaime? HAH we are JUST friends. Plus I think I’m
literally seeing someone else right now.

CASS
Right… “seeing someone”. You should probably figure that one out.
I’ll let you get back to your Jaime.
(CASS walks away laughing)

ALEX
It’s just Jaime. They’re not mine.
(ALEX shakes her head)

(BLACK OUT & Curtains Drop); (Music:Baby)

 ACT I

Scene 4

SETTING: We are in ALEX’s bedroom. There is a desk with one chair.

upstage. A picture lies on the desk and there is also a poster on the
wall. ​Lights are Green​.

AT RISE: ALEX is sitting on her office chair, wearing all black. She
is looking at a poster and talking to it, facing away from the
audience.

ALEX
Me? Like Jaime? Sure...as if. Not. happening. Plus it’s beyond my
concerns right now. I’ve gotta figure out this ghost thing. Why does
it keep pointing at Jaime?

(ALEX gets up from the chair and paces back and forth center stage)

Okay, ghost! Weird figure person! Come out! What do you want from
Jaime? Why am I the only one who can see you?

(ALEX’s phone rings. It’s JAIME calling)

Jaime, hey what’s up?

JAIME
(off)
Hey Alex. I just wanted to say I had fun studying with you today. As
weird as that sounds.

ALEX
Oh yeah, me too. Studying with you makes the whole studying thing a
lot less boring. Cause you know you. You’re there haha!

(​Lights flickering, change color to RED​. Alex is distracted by the

lights, puts phone to the side and looks around)

JAIME
(off)
uhh remember before Cass came. I was trying to tell you
something...Alex I think--

(LOOMING FIGURE 1 enters stage left)

ALEX
Hey uh, I gotta go okay? Sorry. I’ll call you back or something.
(ALEX hangs up and puts the phone on the table)
ALEX (cont.)
What do you want?

(LOOMING FIGURE 1 Points at the phone)

My phone? Why?

(LOOMING FIGURE 1 shakes head, points at phone again)

Jaime? Why?

(LOOMING FIGURE 1 points at ALEX)

Me?

(LOOMING FIGURE 1 Takes a step closer)

Whoa there…
(ALEX takes a little step back. LOOMING FIGURE 1 steps closer, ALEX
backs up into a chair and sits)

Stay there. Don’t come any closer.

(​Lights flicker​ as LOOMING FIGURE steps closer and closer points

towards Alex)

What are you doing? Noooooooo!

(BLACK OUT)

(3 second pause)

(​Lights fade in RED​. LOOMING FIGURE 1 is pointing at ALEX’s chest)

ALEX
(confused)
Huh?

(LOOMING FIGURE 1 points to the phone and then to Alex’s heart)

I...I don’t understand.

LOOMING FIGURE 1:
(In a deep voice)
I am your feelings, Alex.
 ALEX
You’re my what?

LOOMING FIGURE 1:
(regular voice, pulls down hood to reveal face)
Your feelings. Emotions. Desires. You know all that fluffy stuff.

ALEX
Emotions? Feelings? For Jaime? But I don’t like them like that.

LOOMING FIGURE 1:
Well I’m here buddy, so you clearly do.

ALEX
I...okay. Maybe there’s something. Ugh! So that’s why you always
appear when I’m near them. WAIT! Can they see you?

LOOMING FIGURE 1:
As far as I know, you’re the only one who can see me. I know what you
know. And all I know is that YOU LIKE JAIME. You should really tell
them how you feel.

ALEX
(Stands)
WHAT? NO WAY! That’s not how it works. People don’t just announce
their emotions to the world. Plus what makes you so sure that they
would feel the same about me?

(Sits)
Oh wow this is wild. I’m talking to a ghost and asking it for advice.

LOOMING FIGURE 1:
Wow okay. I’m not a ghost. Just the manifestation of your feelings.
Would it really be that bad for them to know how you feel?

ALEX
Well what if they don’t like me? Then I just made a fool of myself.

LOOMING FIGURE 1:
You don’t know that.

ALEX
Neither do you...Right?

LOOMING FIGURE 1:
I know as much as you do buddy.

(BLACK OUT & Curtains Drop)(END OF SCENE); (Music: Time Warp)

 ACT I

Scene 5

SETTING: We flashback to the end of Scene 2. We are back at the

library.There is a big table with 4 chairs stage left. ​Lights are
Yellow

AT RISE: JAIME is sitting at their chair. ALEX is about to be pulled

away by CASS.

CASS
(sarcastically)
That sounds fun, but no. I actually came here cause I saw Alex and
wanted to drag her literally elsewhere.

JAIME
Oh...well she’s all yours.

ALEX
Where are we going, Cass?

(ALEX gets pulled away by CASS, looks apologetic towards JAIME and
mouths an apology)

(CASS and Alex go off stage right. Lights flicker, change to RED.
LOOMING FIGURE 2 appears stage left.)

JAIME
Do you think she saw you?

LOOMING FIGURE 2:
Well you’re so good at hiding me I don’t think anyone ever could.

JAIME
SHHH! What if they hear you?

LOOMING FIGURE 2:
BRUH I’m in your head. I think the shushing is unnecessary.

JAIME
Right. Sorry. I’m new to this, okay? Cut me some slack. What if she
saw you? Were you at least looking less scary than the first time I
saw you?
 LOOMING FIGURE 2:
Me scary? Uh...No promises. I’ve just been standing here. But clearly
I’m not wearing all black. So maybe she’s seeing something else.

JAIME
Okay, well I just don’t want to scare Alex right now. I really like
hanging out with her. Please lay low.

LOOMING FIGURE 2:
I understand. But I honestly don’t think it’s me she’s seeing. Also,
is it really that bad if she finds out how you feel?

JAIME
Yes, it is. If she doesn’t think of me like that, I’ll just scare her
away. Sigh..If she can’t see you, then what is she referring to?

LOOMING FIGURE 2:
Beats me…

(BLACK OUT & Curtains Drop);(Music: I won’t say I’m in love)

(END OF SCENE)
 ACT I

Scene 6

SETTING: We are back in the present. We are still at the library.

There is a big table with 4 chairs stage left. ​Lights are Yellow

AT RISE: JAIME is walking out (towards stage right), and ALEX is

rushing in (from stage right) LOOMING FIGURES 1 & 2 follow behind
them, unaware of the other LOOMING FIGURE in the room. ALEX bumps
into JAIME.

ALEX and JAIME:

Hey, I uhh…

ALEX
You go first.

JAIME:
Right. Okay. Hi. What happened to you last night?

ALEX
Last night?

JAIME
The phone call. You hung up on me?

ALEX
Oh that...I uhh
(ALEX looks towards LOOMING FIGURE 1)
It’s nothing. Sorry.

(LOOMING FIGURE 1 looks disappointed. Turns and walks away slowly)

JAIME
Oh okay, so you...hung up on me. For nothing. Right.

(LOOMING FIGURE 2 looks hurt. Stomps foot. Turns away, motions for
JAIME to follow them)

I should go. I have a midterm tomorrow. Bye, Alex. I’ll see you when
I see you. I guess.

(JAIME walks towards LOOMING FIGURE 2, and holds their hand. LOOMING
FIGURE 1, gathers up courage and runs back and gives ALEX a good
push)
 ALEX
JAIME! Wait. I have to tell you something.

(Jaime and LOOMING FIGURE 2 turn to face ALEX)

JAIME
(annoyed)
What is it, Alex?

ALEX
Jaime, I think...I like you. No, that’s a lie. I know I like you.

JAIME
Really?
(LOOMING FIGURE 2 gives Jaime, a little shove)
I mean. I like you too.

(ALEX and JAIME freeze. ​Spotlight on LOOMING FIGURES 1 & 2​. Both
LOOMING FIGURES now see each other. They point to each other. The
LOOMING FIGURES walk towards each other, hug, and walk away holding
hands)

(BLACK OUT);(Music: Never gonna give you up)
