Contemporary

There is some confusion about Modern vs. Contemporary as idioms of design. Strictly
speaking, the words can have the same meaning, depending on the context but when
referring to architecture and design; they can take on other connotations.
Contemporary means, of the same period, or at the present time and is, by definition
always evolving and changing rather than being fixed to a specific set of aesthetic
characteristics or values.
What is contemporary today will be history in the future.
Contemporary architecture is a broad classification of recent building designs that has
found frequent expression in both residential and commercial buildings. Architects of
contemporary structures are known for creating buildings free from older historical styles,
while also experimenting with some of the many new materials that are now available to the
construction industry.
Contemporary buildings tend to be highly functional and may push the limits of what can be
defined as contemporary architecture.
Contemporary architecture is, in broad terms, the architecture of the present day.
The term contemporary architecture is also applied to a range of styles of recently
built structures and space which are optimized for current use. Examples do not
necessarily have similar or easily recognizable features, however, because the
"style" is really quite varied and has a number of different influences. Even though a
precise definition of the term is difficult to articulate, contemporary homes typically
include an irregular or unusually shaped frame, an open floor plan, oversized
windows, and the use of "green" and repurposed components. Such homes also
often have an organic design, fitting into the surrounding space and meeting an
immediate need in the area.
The contemporary architecture represents a kind of specific and recognizable construction,
characterized by the use of industrial materials - especially steel, glass and concrete deprived of ornamentation and assembled so as to form simple geometrical volumes freely
laid out in space. You'd think that contemporary architecture would be all futuristic and
doing something different, but frankly it is not. Instead there are four main ideas that
contemporary architects are dealing with:The re-use of old buildings to make something
new, organic architecture that tries to blend with the environment around it by being more
curvy and sometimes incorporating plants into the structural design, deconstructivism, and

using computers to aid in the design process. Contemporary is eclectic, modern, traditional,
expressional, urban, environmental, sculptural, cultural and global. It crosses the traditional
boundaries of time and space. It is very much a valid hybrid drawn from the superabundant available information and influences of The World Village.

Start of Contemporary Architecture

In 1796, Charles Bage created a fireproof design of cast iron and brick.

The Crystal Palace by Joseph Paxton 1851.

Criticism of contemporary design was common starting in the 1960s.

Contemporary design is more widely accepted today.

Characteristics

Roof
One area of contemporary architecture that can draw much
attention is the roof. In today's modern world, flat overhanging
roofs are a common way to add eye-catching design elements,
while providing additional shady regions adjacent to the
structure and still protect the overall structure from the
elements. A few bold architects have even gone so far as to
add trees to the top of their buildings to facilitate natural cooling
and also to create a building that is more harmonious with the
natural surroundings.

Interior Space
One of the more important features of contemporary-designed
homes is the use of natural light to illuminate the interior of the
building. This goal can be achieved through the presence of
skylights on a flat or lowpitched roof and the prevalence of large
glass areas along the exterior walls. To further distinguish the

interior of the building, large continual spaces may be achieved

by the modification or elimination of many interior walls.
Exposed beams, sanded floors and large expanses of lightly
colored ceilings (and walls) are three more characteristics that
often add to the airy feeling of contemporary architecture.

Exterior Materials
In contemporary architecture, exterior walls have sometimes
become experimental canvases for the application of simple
natural elements, as well as newly developed state-of-the-art
synthetic materials. In some of these creations, it is not unusual
to see the outside covered with large windows or plates of glass
cut in irregular or unusual shapes. In nearly all situations,
decorative trim and molding has been kept to a minimum and
landscaping may be added as an external design element.

Outdoor Relationships
One area where contemporary designers have excelled is by
thoroughly incorporating their newly created buildings into the
existing landscape. Not only can a new house be accented by
the use of local materials and colorful landscaping, but also the
earth can be excavated and moved to protect the building or
create intriguing variations in the terrain. Besides adding to the
visual appearance, these modifications can provide
temperature moderation during particularly hot or cold periods
of weather. In particular, building berms, which are large
mounds of earth that rest against the exterior, can protect lowlying buildings against the extremes of temperature.

Filipino Contemporary Architects

Leandro Locsin
Leandro Locsin (1928-1994) was in some ways a
quintessential Renaissance man. A brilliant architect, interior
designer, artist and classically trained pianist, Locsin was also
a keen art collector, amassing a sizable collection of fine
Chinese art and ceramics during his lifetime.
It is for his buildings, however, that he is remembered; from airport terminals to
memorial chapels, arts centres to stock exchange structures, Locsin left his mark on
the urban landscape of the Philippines.

Architect: Leandro Locsin

Ildefonso Paez Santos

The Father of Philippine landscape architecture, Ildefonso
Paez Santos, or IP Santos as he was known, created some of
the best-loved urban spaces in the Philippines.
Landscape architecture, a corollary of architecture proper that
deals with parks, plazas and green spaces, was a littleconsidered element of urban planning in the first half of the

20th century in the Philippines. However, Santos changed that, carrying out
pioneering work that, after four decades in the profession, led him to become
National Artist for Architecture in 2006.

Architect: Ildefonzo Santos

Contemporary architecture is, in many ways:

A catch-all to describe modern styles that share a variety of features and haven't yet
been classicized.
The term "contemporary" is also slightly inaccurate, as it can refer to buildings 70 or
80 years old.
The most common things about this style people notice are usually a mixture of wall
materials, like stone, brick, and wood, all combined on the same surface.
Exposed wood beams, and an abundance of glass are other common material
characteristics of these homes.
Shape-wise, contemporary homes can often be identified by flat roofs, split levels,
and large overhangs.

ONE ROCKWELL WEST TOWER

General Information
Status: Complete
Type: Residence
Location: Makati, Philippines
Completed: 2010
Height: 210 m (689 ft)
Technical details
Floor count: 55
Design and construction
Architect: Arquitectonica
Developer: Rockwell Land Corporation (part of Lopez Group)

One Rockwell West Tower is a condominium in Rockwell

Center, Makati, Philippines. The building part is of the One Rockwell building complex. It is
the tallest in the complex and it is one of the tallest skyscrapers in the Philippines, rising
210 m (689 ft) from ground.

The One Rockwell West Tower with its curvilinear design perfectly complements the East
Towers sharp edges, as it is made up of two halves that seem to slide away from each
other at the centre. The West Tower of One Rockwell is the tallest residential building in
Rockwell Center, standing 55 storeys high.
One of Rockwell's keys to success is its perceptive understanding of the individual. As life is
not restricted to the four-walled structure of a home, the property maverick recognized the
need to extend its breadth so that the Rockwell signature of exclusivity and luxury is felt
even outside the comforts of your residence - from owning a sunrise with a Z-loft every
morning, to a whole urban skyline that lights up for you every night. This principle has
returned a famed 'city within a city' that integrates residential, office, educational,
entertainment and shopping establishments into one exclusive community - undeniably the
first of its kind.

Design
The tower is elliptical in shape and is built using the usual steel and glaze. Balconies are
built at the peak of the tower. The bulk of the tower is covered in a blue tinted glaze but
clear glazing will be used to cover the roof.

The facade overrun allows the using of a rooftop pool and decking area to have a fantastic
view of the city below without having to worry about falling over the edge. The top of the
tower also features two levels not only making it magnificent but this gives space for
relaxation in separated areas.

San Miguel Avenue is a short north-south thoroughfare in Ortigas Center, Metro

Manila, Philippines. It is an eight-lane divided avenue that runs for several hundred meters
between Shaw Boulevard in the south and Julia Vargas Avenue in the north. It is named for

the country's largest industrial conglomerate San Miguel Corporation that is headquartered
on the avenue's junction with Julia Vargas since 1984.
The One San Miguel Avenue is an office skyscraper located at San Miguel Avenue (hence
the building's name) in Ortigas Center,Pasig City, Philippines. It was completed in 2001 and
stands at 183 metres (600.39 feet) from ground up to the architectural top, although if
measured with its antennas, it stands at 203 metres (666 feet). It has 54 floors
aboveground and 7 basement levels.
The One San Miguel Avenue is the first office tower owned and developed by Amberland
Corporation, was designed by Filipino architectural firm Philip H. Recto Architects.
Strategically located along San Miguel Avenue corner Shaw Boulevard, it is currently one of
the highest buildings in Pasig City and in Ortigas Center as a whole, and is quite
distinguishable due to its height and location. It is the home of the Manila Broadcasting
Company which occupies the top four floors with executive offices, and a transmitter of
DZMBand DWYS., and to a branch of international BPO company Sykes and Emerson
Electric Company. It is also near numerous office and residential buildings, as well as major
shopping malls like SM Megamall, Shangri-La Mall, and St. Francis Square.
The building has eight double-decker elevators.

Amenities
The building has 6 basement and 5 aboveground floors for parking of tenants and guests, a
canteen at the 9th floor
Right at the heart of Pasig City along its major thoroughfare, San Miguel Avenue, at the
corner of Shaw Boulevard, rises the trendsetter in modern high-rise office condominiums.
The project proponents have conceptualized it as a purely office condominium, in contrast
to the mixed-use concept, to maximize the benefits from a centralized design and functional
master plan. All the physical aspects, service system components and amenities are
geared towards the needs of modern-day offices, which otherwise would have been less
effective and dissipated if combined with other uses for the edifice. The One San Miguel
Avenue is custom-built to cater to the fast-paced and multi-faceted demands of modern-day
offices including BPOs as dictated by young executives, professionals and captains of
industry.
Bringing the project to reality is a powerhouse team of leading practitioners in the fields of
architecture and engineering. The One San Miguel Avenue is not only an awesome and
grandiose landmark to behold, but is unique in its trailblazing norms in functional design
and total practicality. All these features, together with the planned amenities, easily qualifies
the One San Miguel Avenue as the dream place to put up ones office.

The One San Miguel Avenue beckons to all of those who are presently looking around for

promising in terms of potential savings and growth. It is the sound and wise investment
choice.

The Zuellig Building is an office skyscraper
located in the Makati Central Business District in Metro Manila, Philippines. It is owned
by the Zuellig Group and developed by its real estate arm, Bridgebury Realty Corp. It
rises to 155 metres (508.53 feet), and was the first Platinum level LEED Core and Shell
building in the Philippines upon its completion in 2013.
Project team
The Zuellig Building was designed by international architectural firm Skidmore, Owings
and Merrill, in cooperation with local architectural firm W.V. Coscolluela & Associates.
Facade design was done by Meinhardt Hong Kong Pte. Ltd., while Structural,
Mechanical & Electrical, and Fire Protection engineering & design was provided by
Meinhardt Philippines.

Other consultants of the project team are Davis Langdon & Seah Philippines Inc.
(LEED Sustainability Consultant); E.A Aurelio Landscape Architects (Landscape
Consultant); SBLD Studio (Lighting Consultant); Hill & Associates Risk Consulting
(Philippines) Inc. (Security Consultant); and Sun Asia Industries (Traffic Consultant).

The general contractor is Leighton Contractors (Philippines), Inc., a subsidiary of

Leighton
Holdings. The project construction team also includes Permasteelisa (Curtain Wall
Installation); Design Coordinates, Inc.(Construction Project Management); and Davis
Langdon & Seah Philippines, Inc. (Quantity Surveying).

GREEN BY DESIGN
The Zuellig Building combines a commitment to environmental responsibility with stateof-the-art infrastructure and superb

finishes to offer tenants a prime-grade workplace of a quality unmatched in the office

market of Metro Manila.
The building stands on an 8,285 sq.m. property. The site is easily accessible from all
directions and is pedestrianfriendly.
ALL-GLASS FAADE
The building gains its identity from the ceramic frit pattern
of the glass curtain wall. Inspired by bamboo and flowing
water, the distinctive all-glass facade lends reference to
vernacular and organic motifs and serves to supplement
the shading capabilities of the building envelope. The large
double-paned glass panels with low emissivity (low-E)
coating minimize solar heat gain and energy loss while
maximizing the penetration of light.

DEVELOPER
BRIDGEBURY REALTY CORPORATION
The Zuellig Building is a project of Bridgebury Realty Corporation, an affiliate of the
Zuellig Group.
The beginnings of the Zuellig Group go back to 1901, when Frederick E. Zuellig sailed
to Manila in search of business opportunities. He joined a Swiss trading house and soon
proved to be a capable merchant. In the 1910s he became a partner in Lutz & Co., a
firm with a history of trading in the Philippine Islands since the 1860s. In 1922, he took
over the firm and incorporated it as F. E. Zuellig, Inc. After the devastation of World War
II, his sons, Dr. Stephen Zuellig and Gilbert Zuellig, rebuilt the business in the
Philippines and developed a dynamic international group of companies.
Backed by a century of business experience in the Asia-Pacific region, the Zuellig
Group operates a diversified federation of professionally managed businesses, with key
interests in healthcare and pharmaceuticals, agribusiness and materials handling
equipment, industrial solutions, insurance and property.
As the developer and owner of the Zuellig Building, Bridgebury Realty Corporation holds
true to the firms basic values of reliability, pragmatism and world-class performance.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)

was initiated in America by the U.S. Green Building Council
(USGBC) in the year 2000 and has since become the
globally recognized standard for green building
certification. The LEED point system measures the design
and construction of the building in five key areas:
sustainable site development, water savings, energy
efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental
quality. Buildings can qualify for four levels of LEED
certification: Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
Conforming to the exacting standards of the LEED rating system, the Zuellig
Building provides measurable benefits in terms of energy savings, lower operating
costs and superior indoor air quality. The buildings specifications pave the way for
individual tenants to obtain additional LEED certifications for their individual fit-outs.
In June 2009, the USGBC awarded the Zuellig Building with pre-certification at Gold
level under the LEED-CS (Core and Shell program). On July 16, 2013, the US GBC
upgraded the certification to its highest level: Platinum. The Zuellig Building is the first
recipient of a Platinum certification in the Philippines; this pushes the country further
towards global competitiveness.

The Joy-Nostalg Center (styled Joy~Nostalg Center), also known as the J-Tower and
QTower during construction, is a mixed-use office and hotel in Pasig City, Philippines. It
houses the headquarters of Asia United Bank, a medium-sized financial company, and
will also be the new home of the Oakwood Premier serviced apartments in Metro Manila
(which was previously located in neighboring Makati City). The building is developed
and owned by Quantuvis Resources Corporation. During construction phase, the name
used for the building was Q-Tower.
Originally planned to be a 38-storey building, it was finally approved to have 41 floors
above ground with a total height of 150 meters (492.1 feet) from ground to its
architectural top
The building is located on a 1,790-square-meter lot with its frontage along ADB Avenue
and the rear-side along Topaz Street, in the heart of the Ortigas Center central business
district, in front of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) headquarters. Its strategic
location makes the new and only Oakwood Premier serviced apartments ideal for
expatriates working and dealing with ADB who need hotel and accommodation services,
since it is just located right in front of the major banking institution. It is also a few blocks
away from numerous shopping malls and entertainment areas like The Podium highend mall, the SM Megamall and Robinsons Galleria, and the Metrowalk; and is within
reach from other business addresses within the central business district.
Project team
The Joy~Nostalg Center was conceptualized and master-planned by Architects Esteban
Y. Tan and Gavino L. Tan Partners, while interior design specifics were designed
conceptually by Lee Designs (the Interior Design firm of C.Y. Lee & Partners) and
executed by Leandro V. Locsin & Partners with the hotel/serviced apartments guided by
Oakwood Technical Group from Singapore.[6] The faade and interior design concepts
were made in collaboration with the Taiwan-based architectural group of C.Y. Lee &
Partners, responsible for the concept behind the former tallest building in the world, the
Taipei 101. All the designs were directed and approved by the architectural design
director of Quantuvis Resources Corporation.
Building

The Joy~Nostalg Center is a 41-storey mixed use building, with 18 floors of commercial
office space, 22 floors of premium serviced apartments, and 6 basement parking levels.
Of the 18 commercial office floors, 6 will be used as the headquarters of Asia United
Bank, while the remaining 12 will be leased for other parties. The premium serviced
apartments will be operated by international company Oakwood Premier.
The building has exterior curtain walls using modern stick system and aluminum
composite cladding, and it has a double-glazed Low-Emissivity glass facade that
deflects 35% of outside heat, which in turn reduces energy consumption in
airconditioning by 35%. It also has a penthouse sky garden and lounge, and a
helicopter landing deck on the rooftop.
The building will also house restaurants including French restaurant Le Souffle, Asia
United Bank, and the offices of Extraordinary Group, Republic Biscuit Corp., and Earth
+ Style group of companies.
Construction
The excavation works for the building started on December 2006, and structural works
started by June 2007. The building was topped off on 20 November 2008, and was
completed by the 3rd quarter of 2009. The building, together with its main tenant, the
Oakwood Premier, had its soft launching on 1 August 2009, and was formally opened
on 9 September 2009.

The Gramercy Residences, also known as The Gramercy Residences at Century

City, is a residential high-rise condominium inMakati, Philippines. It is the first of
several buildings built at the new Century City area along Kalayaan Avenue by the
Century City Development Corporation.
The building takes its name from Gramercy Park, a fenced-in private park in one of
Manhattan, New York City's prestigious neighborhoods.[2] Originally planned to be a
65storey building, it was announced to have 73 floors above ground with a total
height of 250 m (820 ft) from ground to its architectural top.

Design and construction term

The Gramercy Residences was planned and designed by California-based
architectural group
Jerde Partnership International, in collaboration with Philippine architectural firm
Roger
Villarosa Architects & Associates.Structural design and engineering is provided by
Hong Kongbased firm Ove Arup & Partners. Project and construction management
is being handled by local firm Nova Construction + Development.
Features
The main attraction of the building is its Skypark. Located on the 36th floor, it has
threestory waterfalls, multi-level infinity edge pools, lagoon pools, a designer
restaurant, health club, caf, spa, a garden island within a reflecting pool, and a
cantilevering walkway a pathway suspended in mid-air with infinity pools on one
side and a glass handrail on the outside.
The Skypark traverses the entire width of the building.
MANILA, PhilippinesA sky park with infinity pools, waterfalls, restaurant, and
fitness center more than 36 stories above the ground is the piece de resistance of a
new project of the developer of Essensa East Forbes, adjudged the best residential
condo in the Philippines. Gramercy
Residences, a 65-floor building, is one of the structures that will rise at the 3.4hectare Century City, a P40-billion project of Century City Development Corp. on
Kalayaan Avenue in Makati.
CCDC, an affiliate of Century Properties Group, envisions the Gramercy Residences
to be an architectural icon in the Philippines that will reshape the skyline of the
countrys financial center. Its apex will be adorned with a glass beacon that will be
visible from all angles of the metropolis.
CCDC has tapped an international architectural and urban planning firm to help it
achieve this vision. Jerde Partnership International is behind global landmarks such
as the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, Roponggi Hills in Tokyo, Universal Citywalk in
Los Angeles, and Zlote Tarasy in
Poland, 2006 winner of the best master-planned community. Jerde is to Gramercy
as I.M. Pei is to Essensa in Bonifacio Global City, the first-ever building to be voted
by Asiaweek magazine as the best residential condo in the Philippines. I.M. Pei is a
Pritzker Prize-winning ChineseAmerican architect who designed the 70-story Bank
of China, one of Hong Kongs most identifiable landmarks, and the Louvre Pyramid,
a large metal and glass pyramid that serves as

the main entrance to the Musee de Louvre in Paris. Place making Based in Venice,
California,
the Jerde Partnership is headed by its founder Jon Adams Jerde, who pioneered
experience
architecture and the philosophy of place making. We hired one of the
worlds best
planners because we want to create a new destination, a world-class real estate
project that the Philippines could be proud of, John Victor Jigger R. Antonio,
COO of CCDC, told print editors from Manila during a tour of Jerde projects late last
year in Hong Kong. Gramercy
Residences takes its name from an exclusive park in New York City where Mark
Twain played pool and JFK Jr. chased squirrels one lazy afternoon, said GP Reyes,
creative director of Century
Properties Inc. Exclusivity Gramercy is a small, fenced-in area in Manhattan
accessible only to residents who are assigned keys to enter one of the last
remaining private parks in the United
Sates. It is the exclusivity, the history and the central characteristics of Gramercy
Park in New York that has inspired in no small measure the first icon set to rise in
Century City, Antonio said. Gramercy Residences will have 1,250 units that will
come in flat and loft configurations.
Buyers will be given six interior-design optionsfrom a studio (26 square meters at
P3 million) to a unit with three rooms (180 sq m, P20 million). Yoga and spa center
The units will be fully furnished. No painting and moving pains and overpriced
interior design, Reyes said. CCDC seeks to make Gramercy a luxury high-rise
boasting of features never before attempted in the
industry. The amenities include three swimming pools, cascading waterfalls, three
distinct gyms,
caf and restaurant, yoga and Pilates room, spa and massage center. The high-rise
will also have
a daycare center, THX theater, DVD library, residents lounge, conference room,
library and
book club, Internet and cable TV ready units, childrens playground, meditation
garden, and
wine and bar storage. Pet walking Other five-star services to be offered in the
Gramercy include 24-hour doormen, delivery service from Century City restaurants,
personal shopping and delivery services (including groceries, cleaners and
pharmacies), newspaper delivery, pet

walking and sitting services, technical support for computers, entertainment centers
and telecommunication equipment, and extra storage space for boxes, old clothes
and sports
equipment. In short, residents will enjoy the conveniences of a city that features
work, living
and play facilities in one integrated environment, where everything one desires is
just an elevator
ride or a short walk away, Antonio said. What is the target market of Gramercy?
People who want to be residents in the capital city and Filipino expatriates
(professionals like doctors,
nurses), according to Reyes. Asked if the credit crunch in the United States could
affect sales, he
said: Filipinos in general dont borrow what they cannot afford. So most Pinoys are
not affected by the subprime crisis. Reserved units As of this month, more than
500 units had been
reserved, according to Antonio. By June 2011, the first 35 floors, including the threestory-high
Skypark, shall have been finished. The 40th floor and the rest of the building are
expected to be completed in 2012. Financing will come from internally generated
funds and preselling,
according to Jigger. Besides Gramercy Residences, two office buildings will rise at
Century
City. The office buildings will be financed through internal funds and equity from
private partners, and loans, 60 percent of the land value. Jigger said the Gramercy
project would cost P5
billion and the entire Century City P30 billion to P40 billion. Excavation began last
month. BPO and KPO Construction of the office buildings will start this year. The
offices will cater to
business process outsourcing (BPO) and knowledge process outsourcing (KPO, for
financial
consulting such as banks outsourcing analysts), according to Antonio. A 2,000-sq-m
property
has been donated to the Makati City government for a school that would be a source
of BPO and
KPO talent. Century Properties Group aims to m ake Century City the largest BPO
facility in Makati.

The St. Francis Shangri-La Place, also known as The St. Francis Towers 1 & 2 are twintower residential condominium skyscrapers in Mandaluyong City, Philippines. The
towers are the 6th and 7th-tallest buildings in the country and Metro Manila as well, and
are currently the tallest twin towers in the Philippines surpassing Pacific Plaza Towers
with a height of 212.88 metres from the ground to its architectural spire. It also has two
of the most number of floors in the Philippines. The buildings have 60 floors above
ground, including a podium which connects the two towers, and 5 basement levels for
parking, and are considered as one of the most prestigious residential buildings in the
Philippines.
Pioneer thinkers
The St. Francis Shangri-La Place was masterplanned and designed by Wong Tung
International Ltd., in cooperation with local architectural firm Recio + Casas Architects.
Structural design for the building was provided by Arup, and reviewed by international
engineering firm Magnusson Klemencic Associates.

The buildings mechanical, electrical, and santiray engineering works was designed by
WSP Hong Kong Ltd. Interior design was made by Brennan Beer Gorman Monk
Architects (Interior Design).
The construction team is composed of Jose Aliling& Associates (Project / Construction
Management); Davis Langdon &Seah Philippines Inc. (Quantity Surveying); and EEI
Corporation (General Constractor). Architectural characters by period
The St. Francis ShangriLa Places interiors are spacious and feature large windows,
high ceilings and individual balconies. Roomy living areas and sophisticated design
blends with the Shangri-La tradition of quality and luxury, redefining todays benchmark
for condo living.
A sleek new landmark in the city, The St Francis is designed by a top international team
including architects Recio+Casas and Wong & Tung International. The towers each
have floors numbering up to 60, with Manilas finest panoramic views. Most of the units
have balconies, and all enjoy a very high vertical clearance. Choose from a selection of
unit sizes and configurations. The St Francis is designed for the ultimate in lifestyle and
investment choices.
The interiors, designed by BBGM of New York, are airy and spacious with large
windows to showcase the
spectacular views. Cool sleek floorboards set the style with marble and granite detail.
The units are designed for flexibility and there are many types to choose from. In
addition, units may be combined and converted.
It has two towers, (1-60th floor per tower), Studios, 1 and 2 BRs, most with balconies,
Garden duplexes,
Penthouses, 2.9m High clear ceiling heights, 6 hi-speed passenger lifts and service
elevator for each tower
Architectural form/construction
Groundbreaking for the towers were held on January 2005, months ahead of its official
launching. Topping-off ceremonies was held on June 24, 2008, although only one tower
is actually considered topped-off during that time.
The towers were completed and opened in 2009 and taking over as the Tallest twintowers in The Philippines from Pacific Plaza Towers.
Due to the tower's location being close to an active fault in a highly seismic region and
also subjected to typhoon winds, the St. Francis Shangri-La Place was the first building
in the world to feature a revolutionary
damping system designed by international engineering company Ove Arup & Partners.
The new system, which minimizes the standard wobble in high-rise buildings, employs

the same technology used to strengthen the Millennium Bridge in London. This makes
the St. Francis Shangri-La Place one of the safest buildings.
The usual methods employed to strengthen buildings are to reinforce it with significant
extra structure or to install tuned mass dampers. Both methods are not only expensive,
but also make the building stiffer and heavier while consuming valuable space. The
Arup solution works by inserting Viscous Dampers into the St. Francis Shangri-La Place
to act as energy absorbers and damp out vibrations. Viscous dampers connect deep
reinforced concrete outriggers from the central core of each building to the perimeter
columns at one level. The added damping so derived, in excess of 6% of critical
controls wind-induced motions, achieving occupant comfort objectives, and reduces the
design wind overturning moment by a factor of 1.7. Not only is this a lower-cost solution,
it is also more sustainable as it uses less material, and leaves more valuable space
inside the building.
Reductions in the quantities of concrete and reinforcing steel in the St Francis Towers
structure due to the incorporation of the Arup damping system and performance based
seismic design saved the building's developer in excess of $5 million in construction
cost and more net floor space (through smaller columns and core walls, and no need for
space for TMDs).

Roxas Triangle Towers is a two-tower development piercing the skyline at the heart of a
great city.
The Two Roxas Triangle units are also clear manifestations of its rarity. The entire 52level tower only contains a total of 182 units. Its exclusivity is even raised by several
notches as each floor only has four units in comparison with a typical high-end building
that has about 10 to 12 units.
The smallest unit at the tower is 302 sq m, and the biggest cut expands all the way to
550 sq m. Furthermore, the towers garden level has two units. Standard units are then
located from the fourth to the 41st floor. Higher than these floors is what the developers

call the sky units. Beyond the sky are the penthouses, four of which are bi-level and
three are flats.
The design of Two Roxas Tower is consistent with the first towerthe unit layouts to an
extent the faade design.
Launched in 1996, its first tower remains the citys most admire premier residential
community, maintaining among the highest occupancy and lease rates in Makati since
its completion in 2001.

Conclusion
We usually misunderstood the meaning of contemporary architecture as modern
architecture. As time goes by, different designs and styles sprang with various
characters and features and named according through those developments. By the
early and mid-20s, Modern Architecture was the most favoured style, though it has
simple and less is more design, it highlighted the function of the building. And since
people wanted new innovations in regards with construction, they ended developing
buildings that accents the aesthetic influence without outgrowing the function of the
structure. This development is now called Contemporary Architecture that uses a touch
of futuristic scheme, a combination of different architectural styles and usually making
use of the natural light and ventilation.
The Filipino architects have their own style. The aptitudes and talents theyve got are
incomparable. Other architects have proven their talents outside the country and we are
confident that there are still many architects who have been working hard in their
profession. We studied architecture because we aspire to be one of the architects who
shall contribute stunning buildings someday.
