Lesson Plan
Lesson Goals
1) The big idea is to get students to understand when and how to use the law of cosines. We
want to show the relationship between the Pythagorean Theorem and the law of cosines
as well.
2) Students will be engaged by learning how this fits into the real world and actually solving
some problems. Students will receive awards for their participation and will interacting
with us throughout our presentation.
3) The norms that are being maintained is warm-ups and also students learning by actually
doing and not just watching.
4) Our lesson will begin with a brief history of the law of cosines and then we will show
how the law was derived. We plan to use many pictures and examples to show when to
use the law. We feel that using pictures would be the best way for the students to see
what the law of cosines is for. We think that too many words can be confusing and
students will lose interest fast. We plan to have a warm-up that triggers students minds to
start thinking of the basic concepts that fit into the law of cosines. The warm-up will be
fast paced and students will already be excited before the lesson even starts. Students will
do problems on their own in order to make sure they know all of the major and minor
concepts.
5) At first, students will work however they want (Pairs individual, groups). We think
giving them this choice will help because everyone learns in their own way and this
choice may help them learn faster than if we just told them to go do it on their own. Our
group contains of someone who will do the warm-up, the history, the real world
application and for our main lesson plan we will take turns with each slide. Yes, we have
specific roles, but we also plan to help each other out. If one person needs help explaining
someone will join in. The concept is not very difficult and we do not think the students
will have many challenges. The only challenge may be the 2 Cs in the equation. Trying
to make sure they put in the right number for the lowercase c and the uppercase c. We
will ask questions throughout the presentation but, most will be in our warm-up.
Summary/Reflection

6) We will not let the same people answer every time, we will try to make sure everyone
has a chance and everyone gets to stand out. We plan to have something at the end of our
lesson, a fun thing to make sure everyone understands and has learned the concepts. We
will have students come to the board to show us what they did even if they were wrong to
point out mistakes. This may show the others what they might have did wrong or
mistakes they should look out for. We think that having students come to the board to
show us will be more productive than them just telling us an answer and the students who
got it wrong not know what they did wrong.
