gatheraroundtograzeovertheadjacentseats.Icatchthemmidconversationdiscussingdouble
standards,womeninpower,andtheshortcomingsoftodaysmen.Atthethirdtopic,oneofthem
instigatesmeintotheconversation,findingitfunnythatIwasthesoleguywhowasforcedintoplayinga
politicalversionofhungryhungryhippo.Iwasalreadyboilinginside,readyforachancetomentally
sparwiththese4idiots,hopefullybreakingoneoftheiregostothepointofnoreturn.Ihadclassinan
hourIneededmyfix.
Flashbacktoseveralyearsago.Imonthetrainheadingbacktocollege.Ihaveegoproblems,Imfar
lesshumble,andmorethanwillingtoindulgepeopleinarguments.Ididntunderstandthepoliticization
offeminism,nordidIhavearefinedgraspofgame.IthoughtIknewwomen,butthinkingbacknow,I
wasanidiot.Myunderstandingoftheworldwascloudedbymyownpreconceptions,andmymindwas
diseasedbyitsownvanity.IthoughtIwassmarterthaneveryoneelse,andanyonewhocouldnot
understandmyreasoningwasbyvirtue,amoron.IsawmyselfasVoltaire,asOscarWilde.Ithoughtit
wouldvebeappropriateifIadornedamonocleandacane,orperhapsavelvetcapeandastretchyboa.
Ihaveafairlycrystalrecollectionofthedetails.Someofthedialoguemayneedimprovisations,butI
trustitwillbesimilarenoughtotheoriginalconversationtoexpressthesamemeaning.Iquotetheir
partscollectively,asIwouldntbeabletorecalltheirnames(notevensureifIknewthem).

terminalward.There,itdoesntjusthappen,itisntanevent.Itsakindoflife.Itispervasive,
evenallencompassing,likebeinginaroomwhereoxygenisslowlyreplacedbyaheaviergas.
Everythingjustslowsdown.
Deathcomesslowlyenoughtogivemetimetogettoknowpatientsthosewhowill,without
doubt,die.ThewardinwhichIworkisinhabitedmostlybytheelderly.Thosewhohaveactually
livedrelativelylonglives.Longenoughtohavekids,longenoughtomakemoney,longenoughto
haveregrets.Unsurprisingly,theytalktomeabouttheirregrets,whattheywishedtheydidbefore
dying,whattheywishedtheyhadntwastedsomuchtimeon.Sometimeswegetyoungerpatients
aswell,andtheytootalkaboutwhattheywouldhavedoneiftheyhadmoretime.
