Master of Science (M.Sc.

) in
Computational Engineering
Computational Engineering (CE) is a new, rapidly growing major
based on a core engineering discipline which is augmented by
thorough knowledge in the two traditional disciplines applied
mathematics and computer science. Thus, CE answers the ever
growing demand of research and industry for engineers which
know the principles of electrical engineering, e.g., as well as the
elements of numerical mathematics.

Structure and Length

The duration of the course studying for the Master of Science is
a four semester program including the module examinations and
the Masters thesis.
The course starts in winter as well as in summer. We do
recommend the beginning at the Winter Semester. International
students will have to apply until 15th of July, for the coming
Winter Semester, 15th of January, for the Summer Semester.

Holding a master in CE you will be an expert for the virtual

design may it be of new scientific tools or of industrial products.
As you probably know, virtual design has become a third column
besides experiments and analytical studies.

During the first three semesters, you have to take mandatory and
elective courses in order to achieve a total sum of 90 credit
points (30 credit points each semester). In the 4th semester, you
will write your Master Thesis (30 credit points).

The benefits of using numerical simulation in production and

research are indisputable, and include more efficient utilization of
resource and cost saving from this increased efficiency. Indeed,
in many fields, modeling and simulation is integral and therefore
essential to business and research. Numerical simulation
provides the capability to enter fields that are inaccessible to
traditional experiments and methods of inquiry. As computers
become ever faster and more powerful, the range of application
for modeling and simulation is also expanding all the time.

Prerequisites

Enrolled Students will be educated in the following areas:

Applied Mathematics
Computational Methods
Software Concepts, Data Management, Visualization
They will come to know basic principles of modeling and
simulation, learn how to use commercial programs with a sharp
mind, how to deal with multi-physics problems and much more.
For the time being, the CE course at our university offers a
specialization in electrical engineering and information
technology. For the near future, a second specialization in
mechanical engineering and ship building is foreseen as well.

All applicants should meet the following criteria: Completion of

an excellent Master or Bachelor degree or a corresponding
qualification in
Computational Engineering (specialized in Electrical Engineering)
Electrical Engineering / Electronics / Automatics
Information Technology/Technical Computer Science
or comparable courses with the ECTS grade A, B, or C
or a grade equivalent from countries outside of Europe
(65% of the best of the course).
A basic study of at least 3 years is required.

Language proficiency
Our course in Computational Engineering is taught in English.
* TOEFL score of at least 71% of the total score (IBT-Internet
based test). The results shouldnt be older than 2 years. Native
speakers are exempt.
Generally, prior knowledge of German language proficiency is
recommended in order to ease daily life. The great choice of
elective courses in English is augmented by some modules that
are offered in German. Only the latter will request a German
language proficiency certificate of at least 480 hrs of German.

Modules of the Course

The course of study was designed in a modular way. There are
exams for all modules. The modular design also allows you to
study one semester in a foreign country.

University of Rostock

Founded in 1419 at the Marienkirche, the main church of

Rostock. Our motto "traditio et innovatio" combines
maritime and hanseatic traditions with elite research and
science.
Ten faculties are located at the university. More than 70
course offerings. Approx. 360 professors and 2254
academical staff.
There are around 14,100 students including approximately 1,000 students from abroad.
You can play several sports within approx. 90 different
sport disciplines and participate in small competitions.
ROhrSTOCK is the oldest successful student cabaret in
all of Germany.
Many activities are organized by the International office
(AAA), the Local Erasmus Initiative, i.e. yearly Christmas
celebration, excursions and much more.
There are many popular student clubs.

Hanseatic City of Rostock

The Faculty of Computer Science and

Electrical Engineering holds its top ranking
within Germany and Europe.

With approximately 200,000 inhabitants, Rostock is the

biggest town as well as the centre of economy in
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
Rostock is a vintage Hanseatic- and harbor town.
It is located immediately close to the most beautiful Baltic
Sea coastline, where you can get to by bicycle in half an
hour.
There are theatres, museums and a very lively cultural
scene. You may relax at the zoo, the botanical garden,
the IGA-park and at many other green spaces.
Every year in August, Rostock celebrates a big
international party at the Hanse-Sail with sailing boat from
all over the world and around one million visitors.
The Krpeliner-Tor-Vorstadt is distinguished as a very
alive student area, with its popular caf and pub scene.
Since 2001 Rostock has become a partner town with
Raleigh, North Carolina. Scientists from the Faculty of
Computer Science and Electrical Engineering have paved
this way by co-operation with North Carolina State
University.
There are many more bi-lateral co-operations with other
universities worldwide.
