9. RESEARCH ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
A) Doctoral work: Cytogenetical studies in Guizotia species
Brief Summary: Guizotia abyssinica, commonly known as Niger is an important oil seed
crop cultivated in Indian subcontinent and East African Countries. Fundamental information
about genome relations among various species of Guizotia was lacking which is very much
essential for plant breeders, geneticists for the improvement of the crop. Speciation
mechanism, evolutionary trends and phylogenetic relationships between Guizotia
abyssinica and other wild Guizotia species namely, G. scabra, G. schimperi, G. villosa, G.
zavattarii, and G. reptans have been determined under above investigation based on
karyotypic studies, hybridization analysis of chromosome pairing among inter-specific
hybrids. Cytological studies revealed that all the species of Guizotia are diploid with 2n=30
chromosomes. The basal chromosome number for Guizotia is x=15. Chromosome pairing
between hybrids of Guizotia species revealed that G. schimperi is the progenitor of G.
abyssinica and various species have been isolated from each other by translocations.
Domestication of Guizotia abyssinica has been predicted to have taken place in Ethiopian
highlands based on morphological, ecological, phyto-geographical and genome analytical
studies.
Post-doctoral work: i) Developed biotechnological methods for the production of
bioactive compounds through cell and organ cultures in Ginseng, Siberian ginseng,
Echinacea, St. Johns wort and in many other systems using bioreactor technology. Various
commercial products of Ginseng are released in collaboration with South Korean
collaborating institutes.
ii) In vitro methods have been developed for the successful production of haploids in
cucumber and melons.
