Co-op receives grant
Submitted Article
Food Co-op Initiative announced
the award of 12 Seed Grants to new
retail food co-ops organizing across
the United States. The public interest in food co-ops is at an all-time
high, reports FCI Executive Director
Stuart Reid. By owning and controlling their own cooperative store,
communities are able to ensure stable
access to healthy food, provide meaningful jobs, and support local producers. Food co-ops can become both an
economic anchor and a social hub for
the community. Award winners were
selected based on the strength of their
leadership, quality of business planning, potential for successful operations, and potential impact made by

the grant funds.

The awards will be used to help
pay for professional business development, market studies, and membership recruitment. Co-op organizers
will raise matching funds in their
community and collaborate with
Food Co-op Initiative throughout
their development process. This is a
very select group, said Reid. We
are working with over 140 communities that are actively engaged in starting a food co-op. Although we were
only able to provide funding to a limited number of co-ops, FCI provides
free resources, training and advice to
all food co-ops using a web-based approach which allows easy access on
demand and provides personalized
services through mentoring, live

training events and a lot of e-mail.

This marks the 6th round of Food
Co-op Initiative Seed Grants since
the program began in 2005. In that
time, $560,000 in startup support has
been awarded to 68 food co-ops.
Newly opened cooperative groceries
are expected to generate over $500
million in revenue over the next five
years.
Food Co-op Initiative is a nonprofit 501(c)3 created to encourage
and support new food co-op development. The Seed Grant program is
made possible through a USDA Rural
Cooperative Development Grant and
major funding from the Blooming
Prairie Foundation, National Cooperative Bank, National Co+op Grocers,
and the food co-op community.

Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge

thanks dedicated Adopt-A-Road volunteers
Submitted Article
Adopt-a-Road participants volunteer for Sherburne National Wildlife
Refuge (NWR) and work to
clean roadsides that border
and bisect refuge land. This
spring, from April to June,
approximately six individuals, three families, and
seven groups, such as boy
and girl scouts and 4-H
groups, volunteered to
clean countless miles of
roads. Sherburne NWR
would like to thank all of
the Adopt-a-Road volunteers for their commitment,
hard work, and willingness
to help.
The
Adopt-a-Road
program is not only a cleanup operation; it works to

educate both the passersby

and the Adopt-a-Road volunteers about the responsibility of land stewardship.
As one Adopt-a Road volunteer commented this
spring, I noticed whitetail
deer and snakes moving
along the section of road
where I was walking. If I
was just driving by these
areas, I would have missed
seeing the animals and I
would have missed picking
up the trash that is interfering with their habitat.
Each time a volunteer is
spotted walking down a
roadside, someone, somewhere is reminded of our
shared responsibility to
care for the land. The fact
that Adopt-a-Road volunteers not only share this

sense of responsibility, but

also put into action is what
makes them so special, valued and appreciated.
Sherburne National
Wildlife Refuge is so
thankful for the efforts of
our dedicated Adopt-aRoad volunteers to keep
our roadsides and habitats
clean and wildlife friendly.
Sherburne NWR would
also like to thank Republic
Services for donating a
dumpster for our Adopt-aRoad program to use during the clean-up.
Sherburne Refuge is
managed by the U.S. Fish
& Wildlife Service, and is
located near the cities of
Princeton, Zimmerman,
and St. Cloud, in central
Minnesota.

The mission of the
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is working with others
to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, plants
and their habitats for the
continuing benefit of the
American people. We are
both a leader and trusted
partner in fish and wildlife
conservation, known for
our scientific excellence,
stewardship of lands and
natural resources, dedicated
professionals and commitment to public service.
